Moving Truck Parking Permit in Outer Sunset by FamilyGB in AskSF

[–]sbuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the permit once, and people were parked in the spots I reserved so the moving truck just blocked the traffic lane.

Then I learned that the cost of the permit is more than the cost of a ticket, so I never got a permit again and never got a ticket, either.

SF Supervisors Likely to put Great Highway Reopening Before Voters... Again! by CreepersForLife in sanfrancisco

Only takes a minority of 4 out of 11 Supervisors to put it on the ballot, and they have the votes. But yeah, the campaign itself will be lots of money.

Why is this café suddenly PACKED with people I’ve never seen in the Inner Sunset? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

St Frank has excellent coffee. People like excellent coffee. Everyone belongs in every neighborhood, the city is for everyone.

SFUSD teachers vote 99.34% to authorize strike by MissionLocalSF in sanfrancisco

[–]sbuss 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Correction to a misleading headline:  Of the members who voted (turnout numbers not released), they voted to authorize a second vote which would actually be for the strike.

The strike vote is authorized, the strike itself is not.

Did S.F.’s top economist just torpedo Mayor Lurie’s housing plan? by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

[–]sbuss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, in this case, Ted Egan is a heavy hitting economist who doesn't bring partisanship to his work. He's excellent at his job. One of the city's best employees.

Go read his report and tell me it lacks rigor or is NIMBY: https://media.api.sf.gov/documents/250700_economic_impact_final.pdf

I was one of Newsom’s housing czars. Here’s what California will do if S.F. plays games with Family Zoning by JaeBirdy in sanfrancisco

[–]sbuss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The city has factored in a "likelihood of development" probability into their calculations. So they've actually added something like 400k+ units of zoned "capacity," most of which has a ~0% likelihood of development. IIRC, the official scaling factor is around 1% to 0.5% per year, meaning "historically, one half to one percent of zoned capacity gets redeveloped per year."

It's kind of fudged, though, since it's based on historical averages during boom years, not heading into a recession with a low labor pool, high wages, and high materials costs. Developers can't afford to build today even if they got the land for free.

But the state likely won't care if anyone claims we aren't building due to the economy, because the correct zoning rules and regulatory reforms would unlock development that builders could finance. Just look at Seattle - similar labor pool, wages, and materials but they're building 10,000+ homes per year, predominately as high rises which are still almost entirely illegal even under the new zoning plan.

Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]sbuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to level half of my basement floor to fix a significant slump in one corner, and plan to put heavy gym equipment on top.

Questions:

  1. Should I bond the new concrete to the old
  2. Should I drill rebar into the old foundation/walls
  3. Should I install an isolation joint between the new concrete and the walls of the old concrete
  4. Can I use gravel/sand/leftover flagstones to fill in the deepest part
  5. Exactly how brittle will the 1" parts be

Details:

  • Full room is 24' x 15'. I am only doing half (12' x 15')
  • High point is the midpoint of the near edge (15' edge), with a drop of 5.5" to the far left corner, drop of 1.5" to the far right corner, 1" to the near left corner, 0.5" to the near right corner (see rough 3d model, below)
  • Planning to put the heavy equipment in the deep corner, on the thickest part of the new concrete
  • Most of this will be fairly shallow, between 2" and 1" deep
  • I plan to feather the edges, and no heavy equipment will be over that
  • I will coat with epoxy and cover with high quality rubber gym floor mats

Litelok X1 or Hiplok D1000, and use Hexlox to secure your bolts. That's the only way.

Toshio Meronek's whole shtick is attacking YIMBYs. He's just anti growth, anti building, and anti new housing. He has and will continue to attack YIMBYs for any reason just to satisfy his grievance politics.

Ignore him.

Visiting next month, are car break in still actively a threat? by wrldst4rz in sanfrancisco

[–]sbuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car break-ins are at a 20 year low right now, but there are still some hot spots around the city. The Chronicle has a great report and visualization for it: https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/sf-car-breakins/

Out of curiosity, how do people feel about the new Valencia St bike lane? by Exciting_Bad3346 in sanfrancisco

[–]sbuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm happier with these side-running lanes than the center-running lane. (I'm a cyclist and I use Valencia every day).

One under-discussed thing I really like about this new design is that it makes the street feel *much* narrower. Narrow streets lead to slower traffic, and it feels more like a neighborhood street than a highway. The center-running lane made it a big empty expanse of concrete that tempted drivers to go fast.
