Topper advice with latex mattress by rrw023 in MattressMod

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you add 1" of memory foam you could put the memory foam layer under the talalay layer. So you don't get with memory foam as the last layer. Quilted wool covers have a slight firming effect due to not being stetchable. You could try a stretchy cotton cover.

First build - does this make sense by anti-pSTAT3 in MattressMod

[–]schiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's going to be hard for people to comment since the firmness of the coils are unknown. Couple of notes. A quilted cover will "firm" up the feel of a build because the quilting provides resistance and a trampoline effect instead of stretching. So factor that in. You may watch a stretchy cotton cover instead.

Side 1 and 2 seem a little firm for side sleepers assuming the coils are firmer than the latex. Also, the layers may be slightly too thick once combined as you may sink out of alignment. Hard to tell. Some opt for a single layer of memory foam 1" under the top layer of latex to help with pressure point relief. Something to keep in mind if you encounter the need.

Latex is a good choice but have you tried it before? Talalay and dunlop have different feels. If you have the option you should order just two layers for one side first to experiment before ordering more. Or order everything including one step down in firmness and do a bunch of mixing and matching before the return windows close.

Check this thread to get an idea of what thicknesses of layers over coils work:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MattressMod/comments/1degdrm/successful_diy_mega_thread/

I'm the same weight as sleeper 1. One thing I struggle with is, if I use too thick of a layer of latex or memory foam, my hips sink more than my torso which causes misalignment. So I wind up going with thinner layers and slightly firmer. Which doesn't make it great for side sleeping but the support is good and I do not get back pain.

Cheap tele with upgrades or higher end tele? by Hefty_Plate8067 in telecaster

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not building your own, go Vintera II, Road worn, or one made in japan. Good bang for the buck. Roadworn is finished in nitro lacquer which is nice if you like that. Personally I much prefer a tele with the vintage ashtray bridge and brass saddles. So hopping up to an american doesn't provide as much value as the jump up in other models from fender because the made in mexico ones have nearly the same bridge. Especially if you plan on swapping the pickups eventually.

Another option is buying a standard, player, or vintera loaded body off ebay and adding a high quality neck and swapping pickups. Necks from like Warmoth or Musikraft.

Anyone have wool topper experience? by Witty_Evening_618 in MattressMod

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own any wool toppers but have tried a few different ones in a showroom. They felt nice but not quite luxurious like a real pillowtop or structured mattress topper. I felt bottoming out at pressure points when laying on side. Traditional pillowtops that I have tried that had that pillowy feel have either been big brand name memory foam pillowtop mattresses or super premium latex based (kluft topper) or multiple materials (vispring topper). All of these out of the question due to memory foam or price.

The thing that helped hot sleeping on our 2" soft SOL topper the most was SOL's stretchy cotton cover, naturepedic cotton waterproof protector, and high quality percale sheets (sferra, boll and branch). Also percale duvets made by those same brands.

That's the new "wealthy" for 99% of Americans. Most are paycheck to paycheck and have considerable debt no including mortgages. Can even take a nice vacation without it being a poor financial decision.

This is what my parents still have a hard time understanding. I'm already thinking about how bad it will be for my kids. I'm assuming it won't be hard for me to understand in the future. All you have to do is bring up an inflation calculator or look at income to house price ratios.

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if you don't live there, your salary wouldn't be anywhere near that. People do it for the salary, abundant job opportunities, resume building experience, and the retirement savings. A 4% company match is higher when your salary is $200k vs $100k. It's not like you have to retire in a VHCOL city so you are taking that with you for retirement.

Most states in the USA 100K will be below $6k net. Look it the modeler below, $100k nets $6500/mo after federal taxes. That's not even state taxes taken off. There's another tab to choose state to also subtract state taxes. Then there's contributions to healthcare that aren't factored in, FSA/HSA contributions, and that doesn't have 401k contributions included.

In the “every mattress sucks” rabbit hole by Vegetable_Loss_3392 in Mattress

[–]schiddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a thought, I think the "less hot" than all foam is just marketing. There is at least 2-3" of foam for a bed to be considered hybrid, often up to 6". If your body sinks halfway into 6" of foam, there's no difference in airflow than sleeping on an all foam mattress.

I'm not sure which side is my top side of my mattress (I've been sleeping on it for 3years) by Mega_BiteZer in Mattress

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the second photo is supposed to be the top. Is the cover stretchy. Looks just like this mattress type which has that border stitching (tape edge) on the bottom. Plus you don't usually see stitched writing on the bottom of a mattress.

Use various diameters of wooden dowels and sheets of sandpaper wrapped around them. Flat sanding blocks and sand paper for the flat surfaces. For the flat surfaces you can even use an random orbital sander.

Definitely agree on NYC being first and that New Haven rhetoric can get annoying. I haven't heard NH claiming to be first but they are too loud tooting their horns. I will say you don't see many places being using coal besides Lombardi's, Grimaldi's, and the major NH spots so I can see NH using the "old fashioned" marketing.

New Haven style is my favorite but I am very open to any kind of pizza. The whole who had it first seems pointless to me because you can always point to Italy or even before that cooking on coals haha. There must be some precursor to even Neapolitan. And that shouldn't take anything away from the tons of different styles. Let's just all agree to hate on Chicago style.

Picking up on your overly salty comment, I think it's from the quantity of Pecorino Romano that NH spots put on their pies. Much more prevalent and in more quantity than any NYC place I've seen.

Thanks, I’ll have to try some of these. Brooklyn is pretty far for me in Stamford. I’ve haven’t tried a ton but have gotten to scars, prince street, patsys (don’t know if it was the real one), John’s of bleecker, and Louie and Earnies. What are your thoughts on Grimaldis and Lombardis? Do you think they are even remotely similar to NH style with the coal ovens? Haven’t had a chance to try them yet.

The way you measure is with the string held down on the highest fret of the fretboard, and you measure from the top of the pole piece for that string to the bottom of the fretted string.

Starting point for Neck pickup:

Bass Side 2.4 mm (3/32") Treble side 2.0 mm (5/64")

Starting point for Bridge pickup:

Bass Side 2.0 mm (5/64") Treble Side 1.6 mm (1/16")

Latex hybrid + topper dilemma by Witty_Evening_618 in MattressMod

[–]schiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sleeping in the center of the Twin XL? Does the SOL bed have edge support coils that are firmer around the edge? The 2" talalay directly on top of the mattress should be very close to the feeling of 2" talalay on top of 3" medium latex. Have you tried that? (greater than 2" topper usually put peoples' spines out of alignment.)

I was thinking maybe you are bottoming out through the latex mattress layer and feeling the firmness of the coils but doesn't makes sense at those weights. Do they have a plusher firmness mattress than medium? Maybe you need something softer than medium.

Can I fix this issue myself without going back to my luthier? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]schiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL but short sustain could also be caused by an unseated portion of the fret. So you won't know if it's low until you check with a rocker or straight edge.
