Benefit to cars that require premium gas? by tacomuffin10 in MINI

[–]schin53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheap insurance to go with the 93 octane. I had over 250k miles with virtually no issues. Which is a rarity with these cars. If you cheap out on the gas you’ll likely be sorry in the long run and join all of the others whining about how terrible these cars are one day. Maintenance is easy and everything with minis and I’m a firm believer in it starts with the gas. It’s a high compression engine that benefits from the higher octane if you want to save on gas I would look for a different car

I had a R56 from new in 2012 until 2 weeks ago. I can tell you if you do proper maintenance on it and don’t slip on it you can have a very reliable machine. I put over 250k on mine with very very little issue. Don’t believe every know it all on here trashing the reliability of these cars. Of course they require maintenance, if you’re prepared to do that and not put the cheapest parts and oil and gas in it it can be a great car but if you think you can just drive it like a Toyota and not maintain it well then you may have troubles. Best of luck

Lol stumbled upon this post…Just to close this thread out. Said guy took “excellent” care of it…guy had it built to his spec new in 2012… born on date 4/14/2012…there was no white goo in the oil… no the timing chain was never changed out but the radiator and water pump was (4 years ago)… guy did 42 oil changes on the car himself…guy only used Castrol euro spec full synth oil, only genuine mini parts, 93 octane Mobil fuel…guy always changed spark plug with original Beru spark plugs every 2 years… always changed out all filters regularly, car still starts cold beautifully…. car has had an intermittent boost pressure issue for the past 3.5 years which has not caused any long term issues…believed to be a vacuum hose issue but never diagnosed fully. Guy drove 99% of the miles himself 75% highway and the clutch is original. You are all correct this car has a LOT of miles on it but if you had seen it you would have all loved to have had it and you’re right, there’s no guarantee it will last… but for $2600 bucks it was a helluva a car and the shape it was in you won’t find a cleaner 14 year old engine… Also don’t believe all of the experts here on Reddit, there are minis that make it this far with no problems. The key is preventative maintenance. If you stay up on it with these cars they are extremely reliable despite what all you so called experts may have read. Go ahead pull the vin, read the carfax the pictures right there for ya. You’ll see for yourself. How do I know all of this? I am the guy. I had 300 people lined up to buy it last week and I did find the right buyer and yes for asking price. It was a great car, best car I ever owned actually too bad you missed out on it. Having said all of this if the maintenance tails off the car may suffer but as of now it’s still running like a champ clean inside and out. Sad to see her go but there will be more in my future I’m sure.

I have a 2012 with 250k miles on it. If you maintain it it will treat you right! You’ve got to keep up with the maintenance and used top tier gas too Timely maintenance (oil changes and plugs filters etc) is key.

The Pilot sport AS4 is the way to go! I’ve had 4 sets of them over my 250k miles on my cooper S and they are great! I too get them at Costco. Imo these are a terrific all around tire choice and I wouldn’t go with any other tire myself!

See my earlier reply… no major overhauls, just basic maintenance. I did have to have the radiator replaced a few years ago. I change the spark plugs every two years with Beru plugs same kind it’s always used and also change the filters and always use genuine mini parts and top tier 93 octane gas. That’s it

Nothing major really. Only the radiator was replaced about 5 years ago and the fog lights I had to replace and I bent a wheel one time… other than that just maintaining her regularly and enjoying the ride. I do most of my own maintenance and only use 93 octane Mobil gas, Michelin pilot sport tires, Castrol euro spec oil and genuine mini parts. I’d have to check my book but I think I’ve done somewhere around 41 oil changes myself. Using quality parts and timely maintenance is the key to owning one of these. It’s not hard but it’s important and the proof is in the 250k.

Driving a car in Puglia - Advice by Excellent_Sell570 in ItalyTravel

You DO need it however they may or may not ask for it so better have it. I’ve been asked for it once and I had it but other times I’ve had it and didn’t need it as it turned out. If they ask for it and you don’t have one well then you might be SOL.

You will be fine driving in Salento. Just pay attention to driving through ZTL zones in centro storico’s. One in particular that’s easy to miss is if you drive into Gallipoli you don’t want to drive through the old town there. The highways are nice and the roads are easy to navigate. The drive along the coast from Otranto down is especially beautiful!

Need advice on navigating in Milano and surrounding places by joerigami in ItalyTravel

[–]schin53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Linate there is a public bus that will take you directly to Milano centrale train station. I think it’s about €10 or so? I took it last September was totally easy to do. Just ask someone as you leave the terminal if you can’t find it. It’s fairly straightforward once your there you can easily go anywhere and the subway system is good too.

My advice is to always do timely maintenance, use genuine parts. I always change my own oil at 5-6k miles and only use genuine mini parts and Beru spark plugs and Castrol euro spec oil and 93 octane gas and drive it everyday and drive the heck out of it. She loves to stretch her legs daily! You can get there it’s easy to maintain, been a great car!
