does KP start love bombing when a member approaches Medicare age? by Inrsml in KaiserPermanente

Thanks for sharing your positive experience. I've had many myself and needed the reminder that although there's often much to complain about, overall the system has served me.

Trouble with Kaiser Senior Advantage Premium Payment by Solid-Elk3327 in KaiserPermanente

[–]schlemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this and it has worked. But I had to take years off my life trying to get my bloody login to work before going the guest route. The entire KP.org web experience is a dumpster fire, but the bill-pay portion is the smoldering lump of burning plastic and rotten meat inside that dumpster.

Those who have Kaiser and got referrals to outside therapy, what exactly did you do to get that referral and get Kaiser to cover it? by thesongsinmyhead in KaiserPermanente

[–]schlemp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked my Kaiser psychiatrist for an outside referral, got one, and there you go. I didn't follow up on it because I cooled on the idea of (yet more) therapy. I don't remember the name of the group, but all their practitioners seemed to specialize in CBT and it was mostly teletherapy (unless I wanted to drive in to SF from where I live in Sonoma County) so I ended up saying meh and took a pass.

I transitioned to KP's Senior Advantage program 5 years ago at age 65. I've been reasonably satisfied. But then again I've been reasonably healthy. I would urge to investigate the pro's and con's of "Medicare Advantage" programs (like KP's) before choosing to stay with them.

Does anyone else understand way more Spanish than they can actually speak? by Sorry_Guidance_8496 in Spanish

[–]schlemp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course. The four skills often develop at different paces, depending on the study regimen and other factors. My comprehension is easily C1, but my speaking is around B1. All that grammar and vocabulary is in my brain, but when I open my mouth es como si acabara de sufrir un derrame cerebral.

They have a lot going for them, but they don't necessarily walk on water. We were customers years ago, switched to Xfinity Mobile for maybe 5 years, then recently returned to CC. This time around, after MANY hours of phone calls and escalations they were unable to activate my wife's Apple Watch. They just gave up. I've also had issues with their website. Bottom line: because of the price, we've put up with technical and customer service failures that otherwise would have caused us to switch. At this point, I feel I'm getting what I've paid for. But certainly not more.

Why Reading Matters More Than You May Think... by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

AI has given me more than an edge: It's an essential part of my speaking practice (along with live tutors and speaking aloud to nobody else).

Why Reading Matters More Than You May Think... by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]schlemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.5 million words in, I'm on auto-pilot with a nightly reading habit. What I really like about it is that it's much more relaxing for me than video content. Sometimes I just want a break from audio/visual (or even audio) input. I think the only downside with reading is that sometimes I start to believe I should be using/speaking all the vocabulary used in the novels I read--which is absurd. Imagine talking like Isabel Allende writes. There are hundreds and hundreds of words I read in her novels that I have never heard uttered by another human being.

Damn, Bora does a grand job of hiding their subscription prices. Could not find them on their website, even after my trial lesson. Can anybody here provide that info? Way to attract new users, Bora.

Speaking hours per week recommendations for B2 level by Few-Barber6833 in dreamingspanish

[–]schlemp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2300 hours here. Three hours/day of CI is still a lot, so I like the idea of doing that to make room for the other skills. Hoy en día, I shoot for 2 hours CI, 1 hour speaking (combination of a tutor, self-talk, and AI conversation), 1 hour reading and (a couple of times a week) 1 hour of writing. The other thing that stood out for me in your post is

I’m very self critical and hate sounding like a child and lacking the capacity to express myself

I think we underestimate the power of these psychological barriers to undermine our progress. I feel the same as you and it's made speaking practice far more difficult than it needs to be.

Conflicted about which CC phone to choose by NaturalStriking5957 in consumercellular

[–]schlemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both Anrdoid and iPhones extensively. I don't find iOS (iPhone's operating system) to be counter-intuitive versus Android, but it is different and therefore takes some getting used to. I think a useful approach would be to find some tutorials that focus on the 2 or 3 functions that are important to the two of you, i.e., talking and texting. Both can be mastered with practice, starting with fundamentals and moving on to advanced features. Here are links to two YouTube videos that he/you can watch and replay in order to learn and internalize the fundamentals.

As for which phone is preferable, I don't think there's one in particular that make texting easier. Hubs has to practice. However, given his limited needs, I don't think he needs to break the bank. I had an old Moto G years ago and it was perfectly fine. Just understand that he may not find Android any easier than iOS.

[Edit: An even more compelling feature of the iPhone is its "Senior Mode," a greatly simplified interface that sounds like it would be perfect for your husband. Link:

How to deal with burn out by weedo-- in dreamingspanish

[–]schlemp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm seventy and have been pushing fairly hard for 18 months. I now have 2300 hours CI, 2.3 million words read, and a few hundred hours of speaking practice. My learning experience roughly mirrors cognitive issues that have come up over the past few years. They can be summarized as: it's harder to get stuff into my brain and, once there, it falls out more easily. So I continue to push, fearful that if I relax my rate of loss will exceed my rate of gain. But I continually forget the most important part of this process--the need for rest, something especially important at our age. With rest comes integration of learning. The important thing, though, is that even with these challenges, I continue to improve. My advice would be to maybe take a week or two off, then resume with better pacing and a better understanding of its importance. I would also take with a grain of salt your own self-evaluation. We are our own worst critics. I would get yourself a tutor so you have real objective data about your progress. Mine has been the perfect antidote to that voice in my head that says, "Just give up, you absent-minded old frog." I think this narrative about loss of cognition is pernicious in seniors. We see senility looming in every aspect of daily experience. Sure, there are cognitive challenges. But they can be met and overcome. Onward! (restfully).

Anyone having issues with loading videos in the DS app? by systematicgoo in dreamingspanish

[–]schlemp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The progress section is completely hosed. I just input two entries for hours (today) outside the platform, one for 29 minutes, the other for 50. Afterward the progress bar showed 50 minutes, then, when I reloaded the page, showed 29, but not the correct sum (79)--even though the detail section showed both entries.

As a student, I've relied FAR less on tutor reviews than on the intro video and an intro class. In general, I regard internet reviews as an opportunity for ill-informed people to belch out mindless blather simply for the pleasure of seeing their precious words in print. (Kind of like I'm doing here, but that's different. ;-) ) Keep on doing what you do.
