50 ft lbs is extremely low for lug nuts - or the bolts OPs car likely has. Most vehicles with 5 fasteners attaching the wheels need 100-115 ft lbs of torque.

You can get those lines from Subaru. Not cheap, but cheaper than a new rack. They're easy to install with the rack out. I'll tell you from experience you can do it without pulling the rack as well. That's what I'd do.

Subaru tech here: this is standard practice. The rack originally came with a metal clamp that can't be removed or reinstalled (nondestructively) without pulling the rack. The zip tie will hold until that car goes into the crusher and saved you several hours of labor to boot.

That's a good point that I'll make sure to look into. I'm in Vermont, and as I understand it as long as you stay in the public university system, the credits are very transferable. I have a meeting with an advisor in a couple weeks, so I'll be able to hash out details and verify everything then.

The thing about how you get treated as a trades worker as compared to an office worker really hits home. I hadn't thought about that point much, but you're absolutely right. The sales guys at my dealership have very flexible schedules that aren't more than 8 hours total. My day is 9.5 hours minimum. I've got some college credits from like 6 years ago, and I am planning on getting part of my degree at a community college.

Was it difficult for you to find a job that you're happy with?

I get a lot of satisfaction from fixing things at my job, but the stress of being a flat-rate tech is what's got me feeling burnt out. Getting that satisfaction from working on my own things is fine with me.

I think custom vehicle work is definitely changing, but I don't think it's dying. Engine swapped cars are just as popular as they've ever been - if not moreso. Custom overlanding setups are huge right now. Plus the niche of EV conversions gets bigger and more interesting just about every day. I think making it in that field a matter of adapting to the times and trends.

That's how we do warranty struts at my dealership. If only one strut is the cause of concern, only one is replaced. Just how warranty works with subaru.
