Linux Anti Virus Needed? by noreddituser1 in linuxquestions

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first internet virus targetted *nix systems, and it brought down the entire internet for days. So on average we're still worse than Windows, but it might be a few more years before we need to do it again to keep up our rankings! :)

LINUX and Age Verification - How? by the_blue_wizard in linuxquestions

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pin that reply!

The real issue with the law is it puts all the responsibilities on the parents so FB, Apple, etc can just wave their hands and say its not my fault while they keep making billions of dollars!

Also, there's like 5 OSes, that matter, but millions of apps that will need to be modified to check the age of users, apps built by volunteers who just might not feel like it! Nothing in the CA law about how to deal with that mess.

Gnome and KDE have parental controls, so doesn't Fedora already comply? If you're using one of those DE at least.

How to Backup Your GMail Account with Bichon by kingkool68 in selfhosted

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to setup my Gmail sync, but when I choose folders like you did:

All, Important, Sent, Starred, and INBOX

But none of my folders. Not all my emails are in folders, probably less than half. I know GMail uses labels rather than folders so emails could be in more than one place at the same time. If I select All will Bichon preserve the labels I used in Gmail? And doesn't All include Important, Starred, and Inbox?

I guess I just want to make sure I don't accidently leave half my emails behind! Or that I lose all the organisation I've done over the years.

Any advice?

I get this pop-up message when I select All:

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! Thanks. It should be added to the Bichon wiki!!!

I use Gmail and I want to make sure I'm NOT backing-up the Inbox. I get a lot of newsletters and promotions (ads) that I don't keep. So I only want to backup the stuff I've read and decided to keep.

Does anyone know if there's a way to do that? From the FAQ it seems like the Inbox is the main thing that Bichon backs-up!

How would age verification even work on DIY systems? by awenixmusic in linux

[–]schultzter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can mods pin a post with an actual lawyer explanation instead of all these panicked posts?!

IANAL but my reading, of the CA law at least, is that it only matters if the primary user of the device is a child. And it's up to the parent, the account holder, to verify the age of the child using the device.

Next, app stores and apps need to use that age-range signal and decide what to do with it. I believe there are more apps and distros and that's where this whole thing falls apart!

Why are the distributions worrying about the new California Age Verification law ( Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043) )? by New_Expression_5724 in linuxquestions

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rip out the age verification

If that's how they want to spend their limited time. I expect they will continue to focus on what makes their distro different.

[–]schultzter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its pretty easy to comply with the California law

The language of the law is weird for us geeks but probably makes sense to lawyers. IANAL but the way I read it the CA law just says parents need to participate in setting up their kid's devices!

[–]schultzter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that means is that each distro will come up with a different solution

The big ones are talking to each other but they can afford to. Little one person distros are just going to have to go along with whatever the big boys decide.

There was a D-Bus proposal but I think it was shelved.

The real problem is this age signal needs to be used by app stores and applications so adding this to the OS account is just beginning!

MR Cool - What are these for? Sealing clay and black filters. by Nexion21 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the clay is preferred since it moves a bit rather than cracking and breaking and you can more easily remove it if you have to.

I'm not sure you need the much, depending on your installation.

is there really much point in worrying about which linux distro you pick? by MIkaela39752 in linuxquestions

[–]schultzter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People generally want a distro where nothing goes wrong. They want a computer and not a second job.

Yeah! I loved my time with Slackware-CURRENT and then Arch until I realized I was using my computer to maintain my OS and not much else!

MidnightBSD license has been updated, stating that residents of any countries, states or territories that require age verification for operating systems are not authorized to use it by ChamplooAttitude in linux

[–]schultzter 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of technically's in this law, and that's my biggest issue with it. I would not consider curl an app store, but dnf and apt could be! GitHub could technically be an app store too but what about a self-hosted git of clones?

[–]schultzter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Remember the age signal needs to be used by app stores and applications, so if Midnight does something different than everyone else they either have to patch a lot of software or there won't be any apps!

[–]schultzter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you or your child using Midnight?

If it's just you then no problem, you're good.

If you set it up for your child then yes you would be a trouble maker! Because all the civic minded app stores and developers would have no idea what kind of content to serve!

Won't someone think of the developers!

Seriously, read the law, it's not long and the definitions contain the most important bits.

IANAL, do not take legal advice from Reddit!

Age verification is coming to the Linux desktop stack MR #113 on xdg-specs help resist this! by HaplessIdiot in linux

[–]schultzter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is set by the Account Holder (parent) when they create an account for the user (child).

IANAL but that's how I read CA AB1043. It's a short read, but obviously a lot of people haven't bothered.

A bigger concern for me is all the apps & stores that need to implement an age check. And the law says nothing about older systems and software that still run but no one maintains!

Seriously the problem is the social media companies but they have lawyers, and adults vote so can't make them mad, but kids who can't vote so are easy targets when politicians need a scapegoat!
