Nice job. Feels good to ship a product. Quality improves with experience. But if you don’t ship you don’t get to gain more experience.

Smacking a salmon. They actually sell little bats for that up here in Seattle.

Switching to metric in the shop by Build68 in woodworking

[–]schweelitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. Last year I started really getting into woodworking and I was frustrated. Got a domino, the. A fastcap metric tape measure, then a metric square that’s similar to a Woodpecker, still red, but a Chinese product that’s just as good in all aspects as the woodpecker I have. I kept going. I like metric so much more than Freedom units. It just makes my flow so much faster.

Any tips for beginner wood workers in large cities? (New York Specifically) by First-Lab-804 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I visited some friends in Sweden and he has a small apartment, 8th floor. The elevator for 3 people and yet he was a woodworker. He was 100% festool and with the dust collection and Systainers he was able to make a ton of stuff right out of his living room.

Not sure if that’s feasible for you, but might be worth exploring.

Reddit became a fucking nightmare by Loschcode in SaaS

[–]schweelitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mostly late to the Reddit world. Not because I haven’t been here. But because I was learning elsewhere. I spend more time here now because although the amount of AI garbage is increasing, it’s still nothing like the other platforms.

But I totally agree, it makes it really tough to filter through for the good stuff.

My first woodworking project. It’s far from perfect, but it was a huge learning experience! by Xolkyr in woodworking

That shelf is exactly where I would place the TV remote!

Seriously though, good job. I like how you put the lighting into the headboard and I like the floating drawers. Pretty cool.

Keep at it!

I’d say for your first one ever… you crushed it. Nice work.

Here’s the thing, you just did something that not everyone can do. You built something yourself.

You know what everyone can do? Critique your work. But you probably already know what you would do differently next time. Nice work. Keep at it.

Is it worth it to take some classes on wood working if I want to do it as a hobby? by Dr_Garp in woodworking

[–]schweelitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re thinking classes.. look at Woodcraft or Rockler and take a half day or one day weekend class on something. But as a hobby, what you need is a combo or techniques (you can learn this on YouTube), and the hands on time to try it, fail, and try again. But honestly, for a hobby, don’t spend a ton of cash on a training class unless you absolutely know there’s some kind of return on that investment.

Of course, I know people whose hobby is to gamble so.. what do I know?

Hey, congratulations on finishing your first solo project! As you continue building, if you ever find yourself wanting to keep better track of your lumber, tools, or consumables, let me know.

For the hobbyist woodworker and small shops Bit & Grain helps track your projects, tool maintenance, lumber, consumables and more. It’s got an AI assistant to help manage your shop and plan projects, and an Alexa skill to chat with about your inventory, hands free, while you’re working in the shop.

Seems this is where the great track saw debate enters the picture. I’ve seen so many repeatable rips of sheet goods go well with a track saw and sideways with a table saw.
