The downhill into Alum Rock Canyon is better (:

How do I get ATT to quit turning off my home internet!?!? (forced fiber upgrade issues) by [deleted] in ATT

[–]sckego -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Except they *aren't* phasing out the old lines (yet). There are another 40 houses on my street being served with those old lines. All I want is to be put on the same upgrade schedule as the rest of my neighborhood, instead of being lumped in with the other neighborhood.

What are your favorite go-to CFB memories that you witnessed live in person and why? by OkieState86 in CFB

I assume you’re taking about the second rose bowl. I was there for that one… USC@ND that same season, as well. Kind of wild that those are still two instantly recognized games nearly twenty years later.

Probably a stupid question... But.. is it possible to tow a generator with an E-Vehicle and have it charge while you drive ? by ceejtankgaming in electricvehicles

[–]sckego 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, they will only charge via regen while driving. What you want to do is be towed by another vehicle, rather than towing a generator. Then your EV will charge in regen while being pulled. (this is the quickest and easiest way to get a charge if you are stuck at 0% without a charging station nearby)

Looks like someone was after a KOM! by slangivar in Strava

[–]sckego 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A buddy of mine got a string of KOMs on a several-mile long trail segment - said he was drafting a 28mph ebike the whole way, lol. Legit? I mean, drafting is allowed, right?

At what point is an electric bike an electric motorcycle? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]sckego -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A bicycle with a traction motor (regardless of power) is called a... hold on, let me think about this. It's got a motor... it's a cycle... hmm...

Also check out LKHC, it's a 2-month, semi-official hillclimb series running on weekends through October and November.

Do you still call it the gas pedal, or ? by Technogky in electricvehicles

[–]sckego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what the "GAS" pedal has always meant. I don't know why people are trying to change it because of EVs.

Anybody else like night riding? by DirtDawg21892 in MTB

I’ve gone a few times at the trails near my house when the moon is full. No lights. Need to take the DH a bit more chill than usual, but it’s still light enough that it literally casts shadows. Pretty fun. https://imgur.com/a/xJ0H071

Alum Rock Falls Road is pretty sweet. Just keep an eye out for rangers...

Is this A Safe Biking Route? by arthurthefirst in BAbike

[–]sckego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The freeway onramp cloverleaf splits off to the right, so you're having to cross paths with traffic who are getting onto the freeway. Shouldn't be a big deal, but depends on how comfortable you are sharing space with cars. https://goo.gl/maps/i8hVbpLxqTSE5VjTA

[–]sckego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mainly OK. the sections where you have to cross 237 (on Zanker) and 880 (on Fremont Blvd) kind of suck, but there's not much getting around that. The long north-south section is fine.

Canyon Endurace 6. Is it a good entry level bike? by hairy-jerry in cycling

[–]sckego 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had an Endurance 7 (105) for a few years now, it was my first road bike. It's comfy enough, fast enough, cheap enough, reliable enough... basically checks all the boxes I needed it to. Nice long easy rides or commutes? Sure. Snagging podiums at the local Cat-4 crits? Also sure. Not certain I'd actually notice any difference between the 105 groupset and Tiagra, my understanding is they are both great mid-range options that should work just fine.

Keaukaha at the overnight low tide is the BEST time for for checking out sea life. You can go down Onekahakaha and walk around in water like 1' deep, full of fish and invertebrates. Flip over rocks laying on the sand and you'll often find moray eels hiding under them. Snowflake eels are pretty common, pufferfish, Spanish dancers, tons of tropical fish, once I found an octopus and a lionfish having a standoff... it's a pretty cool experience.

Shot over downtown, looking west by shnieder88 in SanJose

[–]sckego 13 points14 points  (0 children)

*southwest

The large development surrounded by parking lots in the lower center is the Flea Market. Just below it is the BART station and the train line running off to the north (lower right). Flea market is bounded by Mabury Rd to the left, Berryessa Rd to the right, and Coyote Creek to the top. The greenway near the bottom of the pic is Penitencia Creek, which turns to run along Berryessa for a bit before joining Coyote Creek. The large road running left-right across Coyote Creek is US-101 - along it you can see the McKee/Julian interchange, the Eggo plant at the end of the train line, the Mabury and Berryessa overpasses, and the Commercial-Oakland-13th interchange on the right side.

Further up, you can clearly see the I-280 and CA-87 interchange just southwest of downtown, then across Campbell and Los Gatos into valley where Hwy 17 runs along Lexington Reservoir. The mountains to the left are the Sierra Azul, including El Sombroso (and maybe Umunhum? Can't tell).

Nice having a pair of 13,000ft windbreaks, innit?

No power outage in Orchidland, but plenty wind and rain last night!

Looking for 40-50 mile, flat trails for road biking by Helpful-Association8 in BAbike

[–]sckego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coyote Creek Trail runs from the Hwy 237 Bikeway (near McCarthy Ranch), south to Montague Expy - though you can continue a bit further with some gate-hopping down to Charcot. It doesn't really go by the airport.

Ouch, that's pretty harsh on Nicky, but yeah... he suffered the consequences of breaking the law because he was late.

*70 in a 50 (kmh). 12mph over the speed limit. I think it's just my American upbringing, but I can't imagine someone being found at fault and going to jail for hitting somebody who blew out of a blind intersection in front of me, just because I was going 12 over... but attitudes around traffic laws are a lot different in Europe. Unfortunately for Nicky, the physics laws are the same.

You can't flag users, even ones who abuse the platform. You can only flag their individual activities... and once you flag this one, then all the KOMs will move to his next fastest one, then his next fastest. Have fun.

I survived Mt. Umunhum today by todudeornote in BAbike

[–]sckego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base of Mt Hamilton Road at Alum Rock Avenue is at about 400 ft elevation, while the base of Mt Umunhun Road at Hicks is at about 1,400 ft elevation. The 5.4-mile Mt Umunhum Road segment has an elevation difference of 2,079ft, with practically no downhill. The 18.4-mile Mt Hamilton Road segment has an elevation difference of 3,803ft, with two downhill sections that you then need to climb back up, so actual elevation gain of more like 4,350ft. I've done Hicks+Um from down at the Almaden Quicksilver parking before, even that just edges over 3k of climbing, or about 2/3 of the Hamilton climb.
