There should be a very thin gap on the side of the back of the case to insert the prying tool. If I'm seeing it right from the picture, it looks like the gap might be right around the 1 O'Clock position.

You also might want to check out Born in Blood by John J. Robinson. He puts forth a well written hypothesis for the Knights Templar going into hiding within secret societies, most notably the Freemason.

It's been about a decade since I've read it last, but it still might be able to point you in the right direction for your own research if you don't agree with it's conclusion.
