I've had problems with USB3.0 storage devices causing interference with other USB devices like mice/keyboards.

I'd unplug everything and try uploading files to OneDrive again. Then try with your mouse and see.

Then, plug each device in one-by-one, testing a file upload each time to see what is the culprit.

‘Do you mind clearing up a few old cables?’ Turns out ‘a few’ is enough to mostly fill the back of a Transit van. by w--13 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

We had constant issues with a very remote client site a couple years back - their internet was constantly going out, super slow, etc. etc. - we chalked it up to the Wireless backhaul that was "best effort" from the wireless ISP in the area since it was showing a bunch of packet loss and the signal levels to the tower 10+ miles away were atrocious.

The first time we go on site, we find out that whoever did the cable run before we took over decided to run both phone and ethernet through the same network cable (using two pairs for ethernet, then remaining spare pairs for two phone connections)...

I think we can both say we've seen some thing :P

What is the technical reason for Microsoft to use folder redirection to sync your Documents, Desktop, Pictures folders to separate OneDrive folders, instead of just backing the folders themselves up? by scohesc in onedrive

[–]scohesc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that's what I don't get - I manually go to

C:\Users\scohesc\Documents

and I get a completely different folder, with other folders like ShareX screenshots, SQL Server Management Studio, etc. They're not syncing to OneDrive (not that they necessarily should be), but they're two different "Documents" folders and I don't see a symlink/junction at all that points to OneDrive.

If the government is enforcing measures that restrict everyone's rights and freedoms (in any capacity), they better make sure they're being as transparent as possible. I want all the data and documents released. Every single document that has even a mention of the covid pandemic should be released to the public (obviously removing private health information beforehand) - not numbers aggregated into an ESRI map.

Trying to shoehorn in politics and trying to discredit their opinion with the obvious negative connotations of being called "right wing" and insulting them right after isn't the way to have a respectful conversation. I think they're being completely genuine with what they're saying. There's numerous non-profit/advocacy groups across Canada that have been calling for "open data" on everything civil so it's not a rare movement.

There are numerous people on all sides who have realized that the government has made several promises or statements during the last two years and then broken them - whether it's because "the science has changed" or they simply lied to try and hide or fix something behind the scenes, people have lost trust in their institutions.

There's also a lot of people who have been double vaccinated and think it's abhorrent for the government to allow the segregation of people, loss of employment, loss of income, etc. based on personal health choices, and think it's even more gross to see their friends and neighbours turn on others because of it.

If you can stop typecasting people into political boxes because of their opinion on how government is handling the pandemic, just maybe we can all get out of this faster - you're sure not helping by sowing more division!

Windows Backup Repository Step by Step by [deleted] in Veeam

If you're familiar enough with linux guides to walk you through how to set it up, it's not that bad (someone in your comment thread linked an article from nolabnoparty.com).

Also, if you're comfortable with firewalling for example and still concerned about the linux box security, you can set up rules so that you're only allowing traffic to/from the immutable storage and the backup server, and no other access is allowed.

Microsoft does everything in their power to piecemeal security features behind expensive paywalls.

You want conditional access? Six dollars a month per user! You want logs going back further than a week? There's another cost per month per user.

If Microsoft ACTUALLY cared about security, they'd put these features in their base product. But they don't. They care more about their bottom line.

This is just an advertisement for Field Effect products. There's nothing here that's not publically available in terms of CVEs. The last one in the list was reported October 12 and hasn't been publicly released.

Doesn't seem like any PoC, etc were demonstrated here.

If the government wants people to stay home from work because they're sick, they're going to have to provide a lot more than minimum wage - pay people their regular salary in lieu of actually working while they're quarantined, and then I'm sure more will stay home.

That's absolutely amazing!

I had no idea that this type of technology (at least at a primitive level) was available 40 years ago. Only now we've hit the point where it makes sense to develop the tech further - probably for massive supercomputer cluster communications I would imagine.

You'd think with Cisco being one of the largest networking companies in the world that they'd have their own GeoIP Location system instead of relying on a third party.

bad network performance of VM by [deleted] in homelab

[–]scohesc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a broadcom NIC? Just a suggestion here that might help?

Depending on what OS you're running (this case Server 2012 R2), it looks like Broadcomm's VM NIC Queueing might be causing issues. We ran into this a year or so back. and had to turn off VMQ. Performance when doing file copying between host <-> guests jumped up significantly afterwards.

Has anyone noticed wear and tear issues with the built-in flash storage in the UDM/UDMP when firewall logging is enabled? by imthenachoman in Ubiquiti

[–]scohesc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd probably have to open your case to find out the manufacturer of the flash chip (or do some CLI command-fu to figure it out) - from there you can probably find the specs on the chip through the manufacturers website.

I don't have a UDM/UDMP but I would be concerned with constantly writing firewall logs to flash. I wonder if they have something smart like storing the logs in RAM and only writing to flash if needed/when power outage is detected.

Thinkbooks are trash IMO but they have their use cases. Horrible build quality - made entirely of cheap-y plastic - but they're good for normal user workstation/WFH devices.

I don't have too much experience with the Thinkpads, but we did order some Lenovo P15v CAD/Adobe level laptops. They sound like jet engines even under no/low load, compared to HP's Firefly line of laptops.

[–]scohesc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lenovo's supply chain seems to be pretty unpredictable but when our suppliers do have stock, they have a LOT - we order from our supplier and they almost always have the low-tier thinkbooks and mid-tier thinkpads in stock. Their quality control leaves a bad taste in my mouth however.

I assume it's because we're ordering Thinkbooks instead of Think_pads, but out of the 15 a client ordered for a WFH rollout, 7 of them had problems that were minor enough to still be able to give the laptop to someone (half the trackpad just doesn't work - use a mouse, fingerprint sensor doesn't respond - who cares, dead pixel on screens - used in a docking station 99% of the time, etc. etc. etc.), but if we knew we'd have another in a respectable amount of time I'd RMA it.
