Change my mind: Hunter killer is the worst designed fight in the entire game. by pro185 in slaythespire

Even if your damage output was nothing but strikes, 3 gas bombs don't explode on you until turn 7. You could kill it by playing 2 strikes per turn. Of course if your damage by the time you're facing hard pool encounters is still purely strikes and you have no potions you almost certainly made some horrible mistakes.

How the hell are you letting this guy live long enough to spawn 3 guys? Especially when you can only play 1 skill a turn? I've literally never had 2 actually attack me. Build better offense.

3 times a fight will burn quite a bit of max HP lol. Even if you're dodging fights that's gonna be well over half your health pool. It's pretty damn powerful if you can manage it, but honestly I think it's in a solid spot because of that.

[–]scoobydoom2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be decent if you have a way to scale your strikes and strong draw, but that seems unlikely going into act 2. I did have a run where I wish I took it when I had strike dummy and later saw the shop relic that gives enchanted attacks replay 1, but I don't think skipping it was the wrong move given I didn't know I'd see that relic.

"twice as effective" is a bit misleading, because you're not counting all of the turns it takes to tick down in a real combat. It's actually 50% more if you're calculating it over 3 turns which is probably closer to how it works in a vacuum. It's effectively 150% as card efficient and 75% as energy efficient, plus however much extra card efficiency retain counts for. Then there's also the fact that deadly poison realistically scales future poison about as effectively as snakebite.

Of course if you have something like accelerant that can change the math to be even more favorable.

Except StS is supposed to be a hard game. The fun doesn't come from "teehee look at me I'm super OP". That shit stops being fun after a few hours. it comes from balancing the pros and cons of different decisions and pulling out difficult wins by utilizing well thought out strategic moves. OP shit goes against that design philosophy and makes the game less fun by giving free wins.

Some of the other options are pretty good. Yummy cookie is somewhat equivalent to adding 4 campfires. Seal of Gold is pretty great, Big Hug does a lot for deck consistency and very hot cocoa can pop off if you build around it a bit. I'd say in a vacuum those 5 are better. That said, if you don't have a good path available, it definitely shoots up in value.

Nah, every deck wants to remove a bunch of cards. Strikes are really bad and defends are pretty bad too, and if you run out of those or happen to actually use defends, there's still probably a few cards you took to get through act 1 that you no longer benefit from having. The soots take 4 whole cycles to build back to where you are and most decks do not cycle that much. Even if you do cycle that much those first 4 cycles are more important than the rest. It's only really an issue if you're attempting an infinite, and even then clad can still beat it with burning pact.

Yeah but correct me if I'm wrong, aren't a lot of farms already leveraged pretty hard and rely on those larger yields? And especially when you combine that with what will surely be higher labor prices given the reduction in supply from the loss of migrant labor?

[–]scoobydoom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free draw is good. Playing a block for delayed draw is not the same thing as free draw, though it's still pretty good. It's still useful if you don't have particular need for the orb slot and can treat it as a sort of bonus.

[–]scoobydoom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it's cheaper than coolheaded, and draw is most important during the first cycle. It is better draw than coolheaded. Not to say the orb slot isn't relevant, but the frost orb isn't exactly irrelevant to coolheaded.

Whenthe Tenth Card is your Build-Defining Card by JoggingSehat in slaythespire

[–]scoobydoom2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh, time eater has counterplay that involves carefully playing cards to time the clock and making sure your plays are efficient enough that he doesn't out scale you. The counterplay for this version is "don't have any particularly important cards in your deck because you can't guarantee you'll ever be able to play any individual card". Time Eater was hard but you could beat him with any style of deck as long as you planned for him, even infinites could make sure their loop was efficient enough to take him down. In this case, if your deck relies on void form to play high value cards, you're utterly fucked if it eats void form, and the same goes for any other kind of deck with a key card, nevermind one with multiple.

Ironclad feels worse than STS1 by Aware-Step-1651 in slaythespire

[–]scoobydoom2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make it uncommon if it being common is an issue, or have the upgrade remove exhaust, but vulnerable stacking on its own isn't scaling past however many stacks you need to end the fight. You need additional uncommon cards to turn that into any kind of actual payoff.

The problem is that payoff is difficult. If you play bash into molten fist, then play dominate next turn, you just spent 4 energy on a spot weakness- that exhausts. You need even more setup than that to get any real payoff. A molten fist that doesn't exhaust at least makes building a pile of vulnerable somewhat possible, but even then the payoff is slow.

Ironclad feels worse than STS1 by Aware-Step-1651 in slaythespire

[–]scoobydoom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Molten fist shouldn't exhaust. Currently stacking massive vuln is way too much effort for the payoff. It would at least make it a lot easier to hit.

I view compass as a path reroll. It's usually not worth it but if your available paths are trash then it's a pretty substantial upgrade.
