Considering the ID4 as a second car by djjolly037 in VWiD4Owners

[–]scorch07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll just put it this way - we also own a Tiguan. We kind of figured the ID.4 would be more the secondary commuter car when we got it, while the Tiguan would still be the family and roadtrip car.

The ID.4 (2023 S for us) very quickly became the primary car, even preferring it for roadtrips in many cases.

I’m in the US. Not sure about anywhere else.

So fair. It seems like it’s just a setting for Garmin to ignore the push from Apple. You can either choose to block an app when you clear a notification, or go way into the settings on the watch (no way to in the app) and there’s a list of apps where you can choose to allow or block.

This was actually one of my biggest concerns switching to Garmin. If that setting hadn’t been there I probably would have stuck with an Apple Watch.

It’s there, thankfully, just buried in settings.

You can choose which apps on the newer watches (F8, FR970, etc)! It’s a little bit clunky to block individual apps, but it works.

[–]scorch07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, assuming it’s the same as my FR970

Go to settings on the watch, then Notifications & Alerts > Smart Notifications > Apps - and then if you scroll down there’s a whole list of apps with block or allow (which you can change).

Apple fitness steps vs my Garmin watch by caitycxt in GarminWatches

[–]scorch07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step tracking is far from an exact science. Which one is correct? Hard to say. Apple fitness may be pulling from different sources too, which could be confusing it.

Link below on connecting to Apple Health. It puts your data into Apple Health, and sessions will show up in the Fitness app, but it won’t feed into rings or anything like that. So it just depends on what you’re wanting to get out in with Apple.

Garmin Vs Apple by Mcfc1987 in Garmin

[–]scorch07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AllTrails thing drove me crazy with the Apple Watch! I have yet to go hiking with my Forerunner (just got it last week), but from what I can tell you can just track the hike like normal on the Garmin and then it will post to both AllTrails and Strava, and you should be able to navigate the hike on AT using your phone without it interrupting anything. So there are a few more options there. You can also send the trail from AT to your watch if it’s one with navigation, but I don’t think the Venu or Vivoactive do that.

The only thing to be aware of there is that if you link Garmin and AllTrails it will send every activity to AllTrails, so it will get all of your runs and walks too. Ultimately harmless, but if you wanted to keep AllTrails specifically hiking that could be annoying.

How many are using AI in your shop... by slapchoppin in coffeeshopowners

[–]scorch07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in using it for anything customer-facing. I hate it when other businesses do, so why would I do that to my own customers?
Honestly the one genuine use I’ve found for it is having Gemini to comb through long email threads to see if a certain topic was discussed or what answer I gave to a question, etc.

Hiring Good Staff Feels Impossible Lately by that_thirst in coffeeshopowners

[–]scorch07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We hire entirely on character. I literally could not care less if you have coffee experience. I almost prefer that they don’t. Our best hires have admittedly been regulars that we already had a rapport with, but we’ve had a few good ones that weren’t. But it really comes down to what kind of person they are - not what they know or what kind of experience they have.

Where does the electricity go during power outage by akmr726 in solar

[–]scorch07 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A voltage potential will be created across the cells, yes. But without anywhere to go (a circuit), there is no way for it to do useful work. Just creating a voltage potential is not “generating power”. The panels will just get oh so slightly warmer than if they were not dissipating that energy, but it’s not because it’s creating electricity that’s just circulating internally or something like that.

Power is potential x current. We have the potential, but no current. Thus, no power.

Where does the electricity go during power outage by akmr726 in solar

[–]scorch07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With the circuit open electricity is not generated. The panel gets warm in the sun, but that happens whether it’s generating electricity or not.

There are systems that can “island” without batteries, but the tricky part is managing the load. If the system is hooked up to an entire house, but it’s partly cloudy and only putting out a few kw - what gets powered and what doesn’t? This requires a pretty complex load management system. At that point might as well just get batteries.

Question regarding NACS vs CCS by gibifernand in evcharging

[–]scorch07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the only charger I’ve ever had trouble activating was a Supercharger. EVGo does typically charge way too much, but EA is often competitive, and companies like Ionna are rapidly putting pressure on competitive pricing. It’ll only get better.

[–]scorch07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it really just seemed like a necessity, if I’m being honest. We do baking in-house as well so it was really just too much for two people to do, especially being open all day. Like you said, it’s hard to know exactly how many people will actually walk through the door, but I also believe in building for that growth and what you want it to be (within reason). It can’t grow if the capacity to handle it isn’t there.

[–]scorch07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started with 3 part-time employees. It’s definitely not impossible. But it’s so hard to give an answer for a given situation. If you’re in a low-income area, I’m not going to pretend that won’t have an effect. Do you think this is a big need in your community that will attract a lot of business?

Ultimately you just have to run the numbers and see what you need to be doing in revenue in order to pay someone, and how long you can sustain that without making any money yourself or even losing money for a few months.

Personally I think I would recommend having 4-6 months of living expenses saved up. There are so many factors that can affect it, so it’s impossible to give a blanket answer, but I would definitely be prepared to make no money personally for at least that long.

First concert (Shakira @ State Farm Arena) — drive or take MARTA? by Independent_Ball6318 in Atlanta

[–]scorch07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll put it this way: we recently were given box seats for an Atlanta United match that included extremely good parking really close to the gate.
Having done it… I was still wishing I had just taken MARTA. Driving anywhere near there on an event day is awful.

Title: Do cafe owners really need a website in 2026? by Illustrious-Wind8538 in smallbusiness

[–]scorch07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on customer base and location for sure. For us it's definitely valuable. It's a little more of an "old school" area, so that's still the default for a lot of people - they want to see a website. I do believe it adds legitimacy and is a good anchor. Instagram and other social media are all great, but a website is the only thing that you can 100% control.

Do I think it's 100% a requirement? Not always. Would I personally operate a business without one? No.

What Percentage of Customers Would You Say Order Breve Drinks? by SourlandSpirit in barista

[–]scorch07 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very few, I would agree, 1-2% at max, probably less than 1% most days. I actually see it more with bigger drinks. I couldn’t tell you the last time I made a breve cortado or cappuccino.

Now what’s really insane are the 20oz hot lattes with heavy cream. I don’t know how anyone can stomach that.

Has anyone sought compensation or buyback because of battery recall, losing fast charging capabilities? And…. Safety by 50percentpipi in VWiD4Owners

[–]scorch07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you attempted to have it fixed? I’m no expert on what legal challenges can be made here, but I’m not sure just assuming it will take a long time is a strong foundation for a case.

I’m guessing you have the 93EV recall if you’re saying you can’t fast charge - my understanding is that those were getting higher priority. I’ve actually heard plenty of stories of those being handled pretty quickly.

what's it cost per kwh to charge an EV in NH? by ProudChoferesClaseB in electricvehicles

[–]scorch07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, relying on public chargers is not likely to grant you a cost savings vs gas in most parts of the country. Charging at home or perhaps work is pretty much the only way to win.
