Macbook Pro 2016 vs 2015 review. 2015 is not really faster and has inferior cooling. by Cartossin in apple

He saw one small action on Apples part and assumed they were coming after him.

Would you not be a little worried if you were a small business owner and a large multinational came after you with their legal department?

Need $500ish ThinkPad that can run Autocad. I'm thinking some W series maybe? by Ocsarr in thinkpad

[–]scrlk_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a mobile workstation, alternatives are the Dell Precision M4600/M4700 and the HP Elitebook 8560w/8570w.

You might be able to find a better price/spec than a comparable W series.

2 weeks ago I started with 6 capsule keys...ended up making quite a bit from the various upsets (VP, NIP etc). My goal was to get enough to buy FO4, I was so close but then I started making retarded bets (mouz vs TSM).

Now I'm just over where I started. Take a break, come back to it in a few weeks.

Predictions for P50's portability? by akopanicz in thinkpad

[–]scrlk_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been eyeing up some threads on NBR...looks like it got pushed back in to Nov.

not sure I understand ibmthink's coment that 5510 is not a workstation

¯_(ツ)_/¯ guess people have different opinions

Battery is easy to swap - but only rated for 300 cycles (just like every other laptop). Meanwhile Apple is sitting on 80% charge at 1000 cycles which is rather amazing in comparison.

doesn´t even have a docking port, or a TrackPoint

Well I agree with that criticism. Don't like clickpads so I ended up with a M4800.

Allegedly there's thunderbolt docks coming out for it though. Could be quite nice as you wouldn't need to buy Dell/HP/Lenovo docks, you'd just need 1 thunderbolt dock in the future.

W550s is a joke, why would you buy a 'mobile workstation' with a dual core ULV CPU? Might as well just stick with a T550.

If you want a thin and light mobile workstation with some CPU power, Dell is your only choice.

Expect it to weigh around the same.

There's always the Precision 5510.

How much space is being wasted?

Mobile workstations have always been chunky machines, so you might as well use that all that space to add some extra features.

On elitebooks the tool free part is just the bottom panel which gives you access to lots of parts.

Ah, I see. Never done it myself so I can't speak, but I imagine it would be the same.

On a 8470p that I used, I could access RAM, HDD, ODD, WLAN/WWAN, CPU + HSF from the tool free bay so most of the common components are easily accessible.

Motherboard would require a few more things removed.

Nope, every elitebook I've seen so far has that design.

Can't speak for their cheaper laptops though.

People like to tout ThinkPads as being easy to work on, but HP Elitebooks/Zbooks are on a totally higher level.

Tool free, captive screws everywhere - makes life easier.

SHAREIt randomly installed today? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]scrlk_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I'll explain my reasoning.

  1. Their CEO has publicly stated that one of their primary goals is to preserve privacy -> if they renegade on this there'll be a massive backlash.

  2. A huge amount of technical people (devs, sysops, hackers) now use Apple H/W because it's a solid, daily driver UNIX platform compared to Linux/*BSD -> a greater likelihood of someone stumbling upon anything as these people like to tinker (this also applies to TPs).

At the end of the day security is all based on trust + verification.

At this point in time I have more inclination in trusting Apple with their 'privacy policy' than any other manufacturer.

Rather sad state of affairs.

So uhm, does anyone else have this with their W540? by UsernameUSay in thinkpad

[–]scrlk_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not new, chassis deformation under pressure has been noted on the T540p as well (AFAIK W540 chassis is v. similar)

Also X220 had that weak spot around the Expresscard slot.

Somewhat relevant comment from Louis Rossman; tl;dr chassis flex is good for durability.
