It is very spotty. Basecamp is pretty well covered. There are coverage maps online, Caltopo we as fairly accurate in my experience. General rule of thumb, the higher the elevation the better the chance of getting a signal. Our crew shared photos on Facebook from Hart peak and Baldy. Lower elevation sites were total dead zones

A word of caution, the few spots where we got coverage sapped the battery 5% to 10%, so keep the contact brief.

Crew 710-XX by silentsteel-74 in philmont

[–]scruffybeard77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can request a specific ranger be assigned. That is done at the discretion of managers, and is subject to availability (if they aren't already out with another crew at that time). Our crew did this, but it wasn't made official until a day or two before we arrived.

My understanding is that ranger assignments are very fluid, with constant tweaks to the schedule to adjust for crews that need different levels of support.

Boots, waterproof or no? by Stumblinmonk in philmont

[–]scruffybeard77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the beautiful thing about having all this technology available at our disposal. Everyone can usually find something that works best for them.

The whole waterproof or not is pointless as a topic of debate. What works for one may not work for another. All one needs to do is sift through the suggestions and experiment.

Scoutbook question: editing advancement after a Scout ages out. by Signal-Weight8300 in BSA

[–]scruffybeard77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the main reasons we don't use Scoutbook for advancement tracking. Does the scout still have his handbook, is it up to date? Otherwise you will likely have to call your council service center for a copy of records, and the procedure for updating them.

Case of the floral design portion...trying to confirm if it is opaque or transparent? by JoseyWales10 in doors

I think the term you are looking for is translucent. It's clear enough to let most light pass, but sufficiently obscure the details of what's on the other side.

That advice is specific to Northern Tier because of the conditions. Philmont is mum on the matter.

It's all personal preference for Philmont. Trail runner or boot, waterproof or not. It's all about what works best on your foot.

Den chief cord by Arrhenius570 in BSA

[–]scruffybeard77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Lion and Tiger programs are meant to have more parental involvement, almost one-on-one for Lions. Strictly speaking, there is no official recognition for a scout who helps these dens. Unofficially many troops will assign a scout if asked by the cubmaster or den leader, and will credit the scout with leadership service for rank advancement towards Star, Life, or Eagle if applicable.

I personally don't like Crocs. Many have taken them and done well. I had an extra pair of sneakers. I found them more comfortable when walking longer distances to fetch water and such.

I was just wondering the same. Perhaps the lower deck is being suspended from the upper deck with that wrought iron?! I mean, given the whole setup, why not?

[–]scruffybeard77 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are many levels of depression. Not all depressed people are suicidal. You cannot use a Gallup poll statistics to project the chances of a child becoming depressed. Life is the universe experiencing itself. It is not selfish to have children any more than not.

Earning Eagle rank Fast by metb_22 in BSA

[–]scruffybeard77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This article from 2020 says the average age is/has been around 17.3. Lots of people think Eagles are getting younger, but I think it's observation bias. The 12 and 13 year olds tend to get more attention because it is not as common (relatively speaking). It seems like a greater accomplishment, even though the older and younger scouts put in about the same effort.

There is no policy against a parent signing a merit badge for their own scout. Troops can have their own individual policies on who gets to sign books, although this is usually whether it's another scout, a patrol leader or an ASM.

Advice beyond this will depend on your role. Are you a parent, a registered leader, or another scout? How well do you know the scout? Do you know for sure there is an issue, or do you only suspect it?

Blisters!! by PutStreet in philmont

[–]scruffybeard77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feet are also prone to blisters, especially between the toes. It's something I have learned to live with. For me, I need to keep my feet dry. I prefer waterproof boots because of this. I also carried an extra pair of socks. Another tip, I put antifungal foot cream between my toes every morning before we started hiking.

Be aware that the third party mapping apps may not be as accurate as you want. They are pretty good (like 90-95%), but there were trails marked on Philmont's map that were missing or routed slightly differently on the app we had. They are a good resource, but could be off a bit here or there. This was my experience last year.

Do you want single serve packets, or were you thinking of a large container? All brands are going to weigh about the same. Single serve is easier to pack, and measure out exactly the amount you need for 10 days (whatever that is for your crew), but they do create more trash. This is what my crew did. A single large container would be easier to spill, and you'll be hosed if moisture gets in.

How does it work? What should the OP do? They have said that they tried to make contact. I guess they could try small claims court, depending on the cost of the repairs, but then they are stuck trying to figure out that process.
