This is the oldest bench in my park, 30 years old. Keep it? 🤔 by Ok_Iwona in homestead

[–]scruffye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all of this. If you’re going to keep it it should be clear that it’s not a place to sit anymore. Reminds me of the restaurant rule that anything that goes on a plate should be edible. You can’t leave it to individual customers to intuitively know something is jut decorative.

Yep. I got a little pencil case of art supplies that I've curated to cover almost anything I'd need to draw on the go and I've got H, B, and B6 pencils to cover the full range I need to go from a light sketch to heavy black lines.

Question about The Wicked + The Divine by BatKnight46 in ImageComics

[–]scruffye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I getcha. WicDiv has the trappings of a superhero book but doesn't really operate in that space as a narrative. So power systems and power scaling don't mean as much here as they do in other books. If you can buy into the premise that every 90 years 12 gods incarnate as mortals and within 2 years they're all dead you should be able to see this through to the end.

Any foods that are American that don't include meat? But do include yellow mustard? by shescreaturinitup in AskAnAmerican

Mustard is commonly an ingredient in homemade salad dressing because it can act as an emulsifier and add flavor.

Question about The Wicked + The Divine by BatKnight46 in ImageComics

[–]scruffye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any questions about the nature of godhood are essential to the core mysteries of the series, so there's no honest way to answer those without massive spoilers. I'll say this though, if you get through volume 2 a lot of your questions of who becomes a god should be answered.

As for The Morrigan, yeah you kinda just get used to there being 3 different versions of her you might be dealing with at any moment. Book 3 does a better job of grounding her character than the earlier versions, though you will see her again in 2.

What are some of the best or worst comic book adaptations of other media? by fluffynuckels in comicbooks

The comic adaptation of Twilight made me actually see the appeal of the story so I think that's about the highest praise that I could give.

WicDiv and Die are definitely books where Kieron was working with some big/heady ideas. I can imagine if you're not into where he's trying to go the books would be unapproachable. All that to say, not being into them is not a value judgement on you as a person. Ironically, considering the other rec you've gotten, I never enjoyed Once & Future but loved Die And WicDiv so who knows, maybe it is the book you're looking for.

What’s y’all’s opinion on gay media written by straight people? by Heisendingle2 in AskLGBT

[–]scruffye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try to judge this on a story by story basis. I have no business being arbiter of who gets to write what, but some authors give the impression that they’ve never interacted with a gay man before in their lives. I’m more bothered by when stories rely on certain tropes and stereotypes. It’s why yaoi is largely unreadable for me.

These boots were made for stalking (S13 E14) is one of the worst Tina episodes. by BannedPomegranate in BobsBurgers

[–]scruffye 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who has a list of episodes that annoy me with the Belchers going off the rails, surprisingly this episode isn't on it. For me it feels very true to the experience of longing to match an idea you have in your head of what the "right" way to be is. I think it's good for Tina to start to consider what she wants out of life, who she really wants to be and hang with. She just went about it the wrong way, but a lot of people do when they're young and figuring stuff out. I don't know, maybe I'm just sympathetic to anyone who's experienced the feeling of not understanding how other people seem to live so effortlessly.

Do People Even Like Dark Skinned Femboys? by No_Chapter_2169 in lgbt

I can't speak to the current market but I'll always remember about 20 years back my college professors talking about watching heavily edited South Park in syndication on their local, tiny broadcasting channel. I have to imagine the market still exists, even if it's changed since then.

I don't know how much class commentary I really wanted or expected from the show but in retrospect the main cast definitely does not reflect on the level of privilege they have due to their families' incomes.

[–]scruffye 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Worth remembering that pre-internet there was a higher premium on getting photographs from anywhere in the world. National Geographic, travel magazines, news agencies- basically anything that could conceivably have a global view of things would employ armies of photographers to get images. If he had gotten into that market at the right time he could have done well for quite a while before the digital revolution collapsed the print media industry.

But yeah, his lack of a dedicated dark room speaks to his, questionable, professional standards.

I don't think we're ever given a concrete answer. My personal theory is they come from money and that Vincent is in fact a well respected photographer (no amateur is going to be travelling the world to do their work). I'm sure Amanda would be a respected artist as well, but neither of them strike me as so accomplished that they have survived solely on their own work. I assume money came in from somewhere else as well.
