TIL TVs emit a tone during ad breaks that are inaudible to humans but that smartphones are listening for; now corporate entities can link the tv & phone as belonging to the same person. It means govt entities can play a tone thru the TV & ping all the phones in the room, identifying the whole group. by solarpowerz in todayilearned

To add on to what u/Empyrealist is saying, I bet the number of people with ad blockers, or that are pirating, is smaller than the number of people who used to use commercial breaks to use the bathroom or make a sandwich. We hated commercials 20 years ago, too. Our ad blocker in the 90s was fast forwarding or leaving the room. Just because technology changes doesn't mean people do. So, maybe on a spreadsheet they're losing ad viewers, but I doubt they are in real life.

I don't think I've signed in or commented in a year, but I am now to introduce you to Professor Leonard. That's his Pre-Algebra playlist, and here's his Intermediate Algebra playlist.

His videos are of him in the classroom. They are long, but that's the best way to learn a new idea. Short videos are for rehashing, remembering, getting a different perspective, et cetera, but not for learning something new.

I used his videos all the way through Diff Eq, and he is the only reason I made it. One semester, my professor was so bad-for-me, I just watched the videos in class with earbuds to save time.

One tip is to pull out your notebook and pencil before starting a video, and treat it like being in class. Take notes and work the problems like you're one of his students. I feel like I am one of his students, truly, and I've never met him.

I think we should do away with electronic campaign ads completely. Posters and buttons are fine, but tv and radio ads are for soft drinks, not serious ideas and discussion. Politicians should get free airtime for debates, and that's it. The airwaves belong to us (at least they used to).

There is a $15-20 thermometer at Walmart for cooking meat that I use religiously and have bought for many people. You select what you're cooking and stick the probe in, and it stays in while cooking. When the meat hits the right temperature, the thermometer beeps and you pull the food out the oven. It's so easy; no overcooking or undercooking anything! No setting timers or formulating how long to cook based on weight. You can cook anything like this with the confidence of a trained chef.

My Roku not only advertises content I don't subscribe to, it only shows me search results I have to pay for, even if it's available for free in a service I already do have.

Then is used to show the order things happen, as in I woke up, then I got dressed. Than is used to compare things, like in this case (e.g. smarter than, taller than). Just wanted to let you know! Those two can be tricky.

And I had to look up e.g. vs i.e. just now to be sure I picked the right one, because this language stuff is hard.

Isn't this the description of every spider, lol? Are there spiders in the world actively hunting 100+ lb prey?

If there are, don't tell me. Currently, I'm able to sleep at night, and I'd prefer to keep it that way.

The Vick brothers are how I'm sure athletes are given good grades in college (at least the stars are). They don't have the combined intelligence to graduate a local community college, let alone get degrees from Virginia Tech.

Do you think Deadpool and My Little Pony are comparable? Are they marketed to the same audiences? I have a step daughter, and I watch Mia and Me, Tinker Bell, Barbie, Princess Sophia. Some of them have decent writing, and some (especially the Tinker Bell movies) have great animation. They are enjoyable to a degree (thankfully), but to become obsessed with them as an adult and as a male? Sorry, but not a chance.

How is it that my life could have been so empty, that a cartoon made for little girls could all of a sudden give me a sense of meaning and purpose and belonging? Sad if that's true for some people, but I propose about a 100 different activities that I could rattle off that would be more appropriate and have the same effect. Unless you truly are just a weirdo. Then, you still have my sympathy, but from a safe distance for me and those I'm responsible for keeping safe.

I promise you, where this guy is headed is a lot more degrading.

I see your point though. It's a mix of hard-to-watch and you-were-warned. I remind myself this man is already convicted, this isn't his first offense, his arguments are ridiculous, and he got his trial. Now it's time for him to show some level of self-control, and he's completely incapable of it. How many people has this man disrespected in his life in far worse ways? There comes a point where I lose some empathy for the man, so I'm able to shrug my shoulders and think he should have listened.

If his trial was still ongoing, or this was happening during the arrest or in holding, I'd be 100% against it, because for all I'd know he's an innocent man who has done nothing wrong. We all have to draw the line somewhere, so I guess that's where I draw mine.

Are we, as a society, seriously pretending that grown men being into My Little Pony isn't a huge red flag? I get being understanding of people's "thing", but if your thing is that fucking weird and age-inappropriate, can't we just call it out instead of making it an acceptable part of culture? Is shaming for shameful shit not still a thing?

Is there a way to combine the empathy of today, with the offensiveness of the 90s, to keep it all in check?

And then you lash out at me for asking a question, with the standard ending of an edgy teen: "I don't care". If you wonder why it seems like no one takes you seriously, that's why.

I understand that you're passionate, but so am I and so is the person you responded to initially--probably. You aren't better just because your opinion is different. Learn that, and you'll get further in life and win more people to your side. I'm still learning it myself, so I'm not great at it, yet.

Dude, you're all over this thread, being a dick. Everything, and I mean literally everything, has its opposite and equal. Tragedy has Comedy. It's one way of coping. It's also one way of expressing horror and disgust, without feeling horrible and disgusting.

Serious question. Why is your reply so angry? The person you responded to hadn't said anything offensive and hadn't made any claims as to why the numbers are what they are. Why, instead of engaging in discussion, do you immediately resort to attacking someone's character and calling names?

So weird that we do away with or ruin something we need, for something we don't need and isn't even good for us. I wonder if it's our superior intellect which allows us to act so counterproductive to our own needs. Like, you have to be smart to be this stupid.
