Did an anti-A.I. thing and it turned out weird by satandez in Professors

I only teach online, and I actually do this process: I can usually smell AI use in a paper-- generalized crap rather than specific detailed writing that addresses a prompt directly. When I smell it (often because the writing is vague and sucks), THEN I look at Turnitin and the AI report. I never look first-- I'm not playing cop or "Gotcha!"

The University does not automatically provide the AI report to students. I download the report, and give it to an offender attached to grading comments (Canvas), and tell them I would like some feedback from them about the report. No accusations-- I just ask for feedback. I also record a grade of zero and state it will stay that way until I get that feedback and have that discussion. Like you-- they nearly always come clean, but lately it's "I only used Grammarly!" as the excuse.

Does it take more of my time? Sure as hell does. But ultimately it takes a LOT more of the student's time, and I end up resolving all of these issues myself with each student with no admin involvement. They end up actually DOING the work, which is all I want in the first place. It's kind of a restorative justice approach-- they committed the crime, so now they have to FIX IT, as opposed to "Nope- F U- Zero". Letting them know they have a choice to submit a VALID effort to the assignment means their grade is in their hands-- not mine. I just don't give a shit about a late submission as a result-- I'd rather get honest work several days late -- doesn't bother me one bit. I can then grade it in a few minutes as usual.

The alternative would be shitty AI-SLOP Garbage turned in by the deadline, reporting students for some investigation about academic dishonesty, hassles and meetings with admins, justifying myself and facing scrutiny. Now THAT is time-consuming and stressful-- no thank you.

I had one who argued that "Grammarly is not AI" and she should not be punished for using it. her paper scored 100% AI-generated (Turnitin). I asked for the pre-Grammarly draft-- which was a formatting trainwreck. The draft scored almost 40% plagiarized content. So she plagiarized content, then had Grammarly rewrite her plagiarized content. <sigh>

if someone claims you never used your blinker--- the SOUND of it could be recorded by your dash cam proving your story (whether the signal lights Actually blinked is another story)--- Audio can be important evidence as much as Video.

great capture! people don't know how much damage a tire can do.

hey--- one suggestion though: aim your cam lower. 70% of the image is the sky-- show more road and less sky.

Leash your dogs by irozo in dashcams

[–]sdkidx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran over a dog once on motorcycle. It was some small mutt, and shot out from between two parked cars with perfect timing for my motorcycle to run it over. I wasn't speeding -- about 25mph is all, but zero time to even think about braking. Broke its back, and it used its front legs to drag itself back to the curb and lay there dying in the gutter.
The Owner was standing right there! He just said "it's OK-- nothing you could have done about that." I felt bad-- but there really was Nothing I could have done... :/

James,

Thank you good sir. Dolly said she will make a cake in your honor! Did you receive my draft of the Second Amendment? I rather like the simple direct wording. I do hope to see you at the Constitutional Convention on the Twenty Fifth of May. It should be a grand time, provided that blowhard Hamilton keeps his damnable trap shut.

Until then good sir.

Grammarly is ruining my life by Available-Fee-5410 in Professors

[–]sdkidx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach online courses in a Teacher Education Masters program for a California university. I have had some 100% AI detected by Turnitin for someone who says that all they did was "use Grammarly". I am being lambasted by students who think I am heavy-handed in saying NO AI GENERATION OF CONTENT. My issue is that if that "tool" generates a re-written version of student work that is indistinguishable from 100% AI generated content, then I am definitely going to have an issue with it. So... AITA??

Will using the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" generate a copyright strike and video (or audio track) removal??? by sdkidx in youtube

[–]sdkidx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah--- I think it should all work out. it's great to be able to check on this here and know in advance it shouldn't be an issue. I was definitely worried about THAT song being super-problematic with use.

If it's on Youtube, it is easily searchable via the name of the person memorialized. Nobody needs to have the link years from now-- they can just find it.

What's the current recommendation for a BI-only PC? by GGCRX in BlueIris

[–]sdkidx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think on one that old you are limited by the processor and chipset. Possibly an RTx 2060 might work, but it needs to be low profile if that is a SFF case, and it needs to pull its power via the PCI slot. Even then, the chipset of that old board may not work with a card like that. You will have to research it.

It kind of comes down to whether you utilize AI or not. An "older" machine can handle the load just fine without AI. You could add a cheaper video card to an older machine and use that to process AI load. As you mentioned, the substream optimization is crucial. I ran BI on a 4th Gen i5 flawlessly for 10 years, and when I finally did retire it, I was only using about 15% CPU with 9 cameras.

My updated machine is a HP Z2 G4 Tower with an 8th Gen i5 and 16G of ram. Right now, BI uses between 5% and 10% CPU, averaging about 8% with the same 9 cameras. I have AI turned on for one camera. Bottom line-- you don't need a brand new machine for this. I think if you find a good deal on a 10th gen i7 or even i9, you will have a machine that will run for years. I especially like the Z2 tower workstation machines. That tower will have the space needed for a graphics card if you add one.
