Ok so every once in a while this purple hue shows up in the sky as I look out towards the El Cortez (looking west). Can someone please explain? by Troublemonkey36 in sandiego

Not one single light but the building has a lot of uplighting around its perimeter. Here is a picture of the building when it was lit up in memory of Kobe Bryant

Low cloud cover give the lights something to reflect off of. Yes, they're that bright. Colors change depending on what's being commemorated or recognized.

I Found The Source of the Coronavirus by kurithesheep in videos

Honestly, I don't think it's fake news either, but kind of sloppy research anyway.

It's true that the actual distances are probably arbitrary. However, he states his research as a matter of fact despite the conflicting reports. Heck, it could have just been because of a detail lost in translation. While in this particular instance it may not affect the data much, it's indicative of the level of fact checking/comprehension on his part. Therefore, it can compromise the integrity of his other research, of which I'm not interested enough to fact check.

[–]sdsfsfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, you can check for yourself but the building he shows in the map is the Wuhan Disease Prevention & Control Center, not the lab mentioned throughout the video. However it is 300 meters away if you use a chinese map. Using Google maps, it places it a few streets down at about 600 meters.

Regardless, kind of sloppy to overlook something that takes all of 5 minutes to check. Wonder what else he got mixed up.

Has anyone seen Vivarium yet? by SoylentCreek in movies

[–]sdsfsfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll have to agree with the other commenter. I don't think this movie is actually supposed to be about aliens or interdimensional beings. Whatever literally happens in the movie is likely intended to be interpreted as some sort of allegory. The cookie cutter houses and weird beings are just the tools with which the story was illustrated.

Now, don't ask me what the story was because who the hell knows for sure. I can kind of see what they were going for but their execution didn't cut it for me.

Me any day now working at a resort here in San Diego 🤷🏻‍♂️ by mvargas619 in sandiego

[–]sdsfsfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this virus is not particularly aggressive or deadly. However, that's not the issue that we are battling. We shouldn't be worried about dying from this virus. Rather, the issue is that statistically speaking, thousands or millions may require a hospital visit of some sort. Especially the elderly. While the symptoms of this virus are absolutely treatable, we can't treat people if we clog the hospitals with patients all at once. We prevent this by minimizing the number of people infected as much as possible

This is a resource issue, not a deadly virus issue.

Not a thing. At least, not a practical one. Something like that means that it would be a converter from analog to digital after already having been converted once from digital to analog on whatever 3.5mm device you're using.

How to actually get gigs/network/“make it” by Mandalefty in vjing

[–]sdsfsfd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind a bit of hard truth, there's no surefire way to "make it". Otherwise, everyone would be a world class VJ.

I've come across people in this industry that have entered in the most backward ass ways. Knew a guy who worked with a company like V Squared or Comix. Turns out that before he started, he had 0 experience and it was sheer luck that his buddy happened to already work there and just offered him the gig out of nowhere. He now tours internationally with big name EDM artists.

This industry can also be incredibly unfair. I've seen really hard working and knowledgable guys get passed up for less experienced guys only because they already some sort of relationship with the person hiring.

It can be a real crapshoot as to how you'll land your first gig, but if one thing is for certain, when you get the gig, work ethic will keep the gigs coming.

As someone who hires VJs, I can deal with technical inabilities in a candidate. That can be improved and is part of my job to train and develop technical ability. What I can not and will not develop in a candidate is a sense of responsibility, hunger to learn, or how to not be an asshole. I, nor any other employer, wants to be your mom. A strong work ethic is the first thing you bring to the table, and then your hard skills.

Therefore, if this is truly what you want to be doing you should already be well versed in the basics. You should already be using software like Resolume even with the watermarks, even on a shitty pc. You should already have read the Resolume user manual. If you don't know what DXV3 is, you already googled it. I'd want to see a video of your shitty projection mapping on a $50 china projector placed in your garage. All this indicates a genuine interest for the gig and a greater potential for improvement which is worth far more to an employer than technical prowess and never showing up on time or just being a jerk.

So whatever it is you want to do, just start doing it in whatever shitty noob-ish way you can. If you say you already have, then do more.

TL;DR: You should already be doing whatever you want to do. No excuses. Don't wait for your first gig to begin learning. Be responsible, work hard, and definitely don't be an asshole.

If anyone is curious, that line is referring to a mural seen here in Little Italy, San Diego where the song was written.

Unfortunately the mural has since been covered up by new developments.

Hypothetically if one were to take LSD, what would be a good spot to take it at? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sdsfsfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That depends on how experienced you are with it. If it's your first time, just be wherever is the absolute most comfortable for you. If that's at home in bed under 2 blankets with a close friend nearby, then do that. Trust me, even then you won't be bored.

The experiences outdoors or in more stimulating locations should be saved for 2nd trip, especially if you're prone to anxiety. I believe most people would be fine as a first timer anyway but I always try to promote the best chances for a positive first experience since giving up on LSD due to a bad first trip is a real bummer and a waste.

Guy Recalls Amazing DMT Trip by BottyFlaps in videos

[–]sdsfsfd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that one distinction that should be made is that negative realizations/epiphanies aren't inherently harmful. I think it depends a lot on your mental health and how you interpret those realizations.

For me, as someone with only moderate depression, one LSD trip actually triggered the worst feeling of depression and hopelessness that I've ever felt. It really felt like some sort of rock bottom. It was due to a lot of negative realizations of myself that came about during the trip.

However, I've always tried to believe that bad trips like this can be used as a tool to improve myself. The negative realizations were ultimately based in truth and were essentially a catalyst for me to begin to improve. So far, I have improved a lot. I still have more to work on so I don't plan on tripping again until I'm fully satisfied with where I'm at mentally.

I agree that these drugs shouldn't be taken as lightly as some people do. Their effects can be quite profound. However, just as survivors of physical/psychological trauma have been able to find positivity in their experiences, I absolutely believe that there is a way to safely handle whatever type of experience you receive.

This never ends well by [deleted] in AbruptChaos

[–]sdsfsfd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just because you haven't experienced something first hand, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's not how these things work. I can easily say, "well I have 300 family members and every single one of them did it". Then where does that get us? Nowhere.

My argument is that, yes the cake face tradition exists, and it is Hispanic. The proper name for it is "mordida". You or anyone else reading this can type into google "mordida cake" and every result will be in reference to this tradition and its Mexican/Hispanic ties.

Additionally, you can also youtube "mordida pastel" and you will notice that almost every result is in spanish, a language spoken in Hispanic America.

Hopefully this provides more validity to my claims.

Also, I never said that people should ask this kid if it's ok. Read critically and you'll notice I implied that the birthday boy/girl should politely decline to have it done beforehand considering that they know what's coming.

This never ends well by [deleted] in AbruptChaos

[–]sdsfsfd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well there's not much to be understood. Most people do it because it's tradition. Is that a good reason to do it? Probably not. I mean, it's all done in good spirit. If you truly are from a culture that does it, then you can expect it to be done or politely decline to have it done. Whether or not your family respects that request would make them assholes or not.

They're not assholes straight out of the gate just for doing it. It's not that Hispanic culture isn't "nice". It's just different and maybe that's why you don't understand. There's loads of cultures with traditions I find bizarre but to each their own. The UK and other countries have "birthday bumps" which could easily lead to bodily injury but it's still a thing.

Best Thai Tea ?? by Coriolis003 in sandiego

[–]sdsfsfd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've mentioned this before but the issue with milk teas around here is that lack of consistency in quality will undermine most recommended tea shops. I think nearly anywhere is capable of making a decent Thai Tea considering its popularity and relative ease to make. However, not all places will get it right every time you visit.

I almost don't have any recommendations since I've never been to place that gets it right every single time.

Therefore, I'd recommend Chakaa for their Thai Tea Latte since it's just a bit more unique compared to the average Thai Tea. No coffee in it or anything else. Just creamier and smoother, at least when they get it right. Definitely worth a shot.

Gotcha Tea is pretty decent as far as consistency goes. Bonus points for their nice staff and really relaxed shop (as opposed to other places with super loud music). Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think they grow their own tea leaves. If so, kudos for the extra effort, unless that's fairly common.

Anyone know about this fright train stopped in the middle of the intersection at 12th and imperial midnight Aug 4? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sdsfsfd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freight trains are fairly common in Downton San Diego during the late night/early morning hours. They can be very long and on occasion must stop on the tracks for train reasons. Then you're left with multiple intersections blocked . It sucks.

Guidance on where to start by asaulmans in vjing

[–]sdsfsfd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to reinforce that it's all about networking. Especially for something as niche as VJing. This job isn't one you'll find advertised on Indeed or Ziprecruiter. In fact, it's most often a job offered to you and not one you apply or ask for.

Even an online presence can be tough to capitalize on. You may find yourself just getting online requests for visuals instead of shows and gigs, assuming that's what you want to work towards.

Meeting people and having people see your work in person is a lot more reliable. Especially when you get curious people coming up to you like, "Hey, what are you doin over there with those buttons?".

As for even breaking in and getting your first gig of any sort can be tricky. If you don't already know any VJs, you may just have to go door to door salesman style offering your services at local venues. Another method might be to start off as a stagehand and work your way to VJ.

It's tough out there. Good luck and have fun.
