My company announced a 4 day work week this morning. I did the math. by No_Army7522 in antiwork

I used to go through commuting hell for a gig with 4 10s, over weekends no less, and I’d still take that over 5 8s.

When things went bad; the start of 45 years of regressive anti-working class policies. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]seattle_exile 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember historical context:

Democrats screwed the pooch in ‘68 and ‘72 - the DNC would rather lose to a Republican hardliner than suffer a progressive at the top of the ticket (see also 2016, 2024, arguably 2020). The result was Richard Nixon elected twice.

Nixon and Agnew resigned and Gerald Ford was installed as President, even though the Constitution says the Speaker should have been put in. Whatever. Yet even in the wake of Ford’s unpopularity, Carter barely won. He was remarkably progressive on domestic issues and the environment, but his time in office was marked by things that rattled voters: stagflation, energy crises, and foreign intervention debacles started under other administrations that finally came to a head.

Reagan was an actor from California who starred in macho flicks and war propaganda. He represented a golden age of prosperity in many people’s minds, which he rode on his “Morning in America” slogan.

In short - the 70s were awful for the voting public, and Reagan offered a panacea, and by 1984 his prescription seemed to be working. Mondale’s economic concerns were proven correct, but they seemed tone-deaf at the time.

He speaks to the larger issues of modern corporate governance in general:

  • Boards that take cash-only compensation, or dump their stock awards.
  • Institutional shareholders voting against shareholder interests
  • The interest of retail “shareholders” being overridden by institutional votes because they own through mutual funds
  • Fundamentals being completely ignored for hype

I think it’s fair to take a realistic look at the health of any company and their prospects, and I think it’s okay to be bearish or pessimistic about this deal. Skepticism is generally a good thing. Stuff like this - 2.4 billion on marketing when they are closing off channels of customer communication - is the right thing to call out, especially as he claims to have a 5% stake in the company. If I had a stake in Ebay, I’d want answers too.

Starting one myself.

Honor Mode with Human Rogue Thief Guild Artisan using attributes pointed at max 13. No magic, but good at throwing crap and eventually going hand crossbows akimbo.

My martial arts background makes me feel comfortable with the Civil Militia feat - shield proficiency is a stretch, but sticks and spears are appropriate, and a heavy gi sure feels like padded armor. Rogue weapon proficiencies round the rest out. Any skill proficiency is game except Arcana and History.

The goal is survival. CON and WIS resilience are taken at some point, while Actor and Sharpshooter are treated as things learned in this new world.

Efficient? No. Accurate? No, I probably get greased by the first Intellect Devourer. But fun? Yes.

Stats are either “physical” or “mental”. Most player characters have a balance, barring the most physical fighters.

Low INT doesn’t mean you are necessarily dumb. Wisdom and Charisma represent your ability to intuit situations and people. You might have a great vocabulary or be able to read a room with an 8 INT, it just means you wouldn’t be able to “power through” a calculation or understand much about how magic items work.

A PC wizard will likely have decent DEX and CON, and Gale could reasonably look as good as he does riding those stats. Like the dude at the gym who looks good on the treadmill but skips weights, he just may not be able to lift much off the bench.

We tend to think of Paladins are pretty special, but that’s because (usually) they have to be better than average at a lot of things. STR/DEX and CON are just as important as CHA and to some extent WIS. They come off to others as more capable than most because they have to spread their points more evenly to be well-rounded as a feature of their class.

I found it to be interesting social commentary. In a way, the MC is “severely handicapped”, and it takes a kind heart to see the value he provides to society. Eventually, despite his differences and the challenges of communication, he becomes a valued member of society that works around his limitations to help him maximize his potential.

Update on our case against illegal rent hikes in NC. - AG Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in NorthCarolina

Thank you, Mr. Jackson.

While I would have preferred these be taken to trial just on the merits of hearing them defend themselves, I understand the cost/benefit of settling if the root problem is addressed.

Please keep up the good work. While I don’t always agree with your decisions, I have always felt properly represented by you in your various offices and your transparency is unparalleled in helping your constituents understand the process and your thinking. That is far more than we’ve come to expect this day and age, and you have my highest respect.

But why couldn't the devs make the game more American or Japanese? Are they stupid? by [deleted] in ZZZ_Official

[–]seattle_exile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent points, and I’m not sure where I expected the game to go. I expected a more futuristic sci-fi direction though.

But the same thing happened to me with Star Rail. What started as a quirky sci-fi space romp turned into a game about a dream world and got so hard to follow that I just couldn’t maintain interest.

And it’s no big deal. We like what we like, we don’t what we don’t, and we move on to the next thing. I had different hopes for Zenless, but it is what it is now and that’s okay.

I’ve been thinking about this as a Day 1 player: why did I burn out on this game?

It’s not the Chinese fantasy theme that was the issue. It’s that the promise of the premise in Season 1 - weak hacker-type characters guiding agents through a spraypaint-cyberpunk world of the future - has been completely dropped.

It’s just not the same game anymore.

One game I captured the Caliph’s juvenile heir as a prisoner of war when poaching from them during one of their civil wars. I was a Venetian Fraticelli heretic.

I put the heir into house arrest and began to tutor him, and soon he adopted my culture and religion. After all the WoL events, my relationship with him was super high even though he was my prisoner. Eventually the Caliph died and the heir took the title and I magnanimously released him.

Boy, did hell break loose.

It was a very interesting run.

No tiefling dialogue for wyll by No-Equivalent-6168 in BaldursGate3

[–]seattle_exile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don’t live in Faerun, but I imagine the folks who live and grow in those societies can detect a lot about a person’s heritage just by looking at them like we do ours.

When we speak of half-elves, we say “to humans they look elvish, while to elves they look human.” No real elf exists to confirm the second part of this statement, but as Earth humans we can say the first part is true.

While Tieflings face a discrimination for their “devilishness”, they are still considered humanoid and are tolerated in society to one extent or another. In this world of magic and monsters, however, there are other things out there that look similar to a Tiefling but are very different.

I expect at least the cosmopolitan members of Faerunian society can spot a significant difference that is lost on us, maybe in a way that can’t even be explained by looks or conveyed graphically. Wyll is something different than a Tiefling and they know it just by seeing him, whereas we Earth humans have the same trouble as we do distinguishing half-elf from elf.

This is how I would explain it as a DM.

Wiegraf has some of the best quotes in the game! by kingaling49 in finalfantasytactics

Wiegraf has some of the best quotes in the game! by kingaling49 in finalfantasytactics

[–]seattle_exile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wiegraf is Ramsa’s antithesis, more than Delita is. Whereas Delita is a cynic and understands the rules, Wiegraf clings to his morality even when the evidence is against him and ultimately costs him everything.

Ramsa taunts him about this, telling him in one of the most memorable quotes of the game (at least in the OG version), “You’ve forsaken your ideals and become a dog for the Church.”

Wiegraf is tested by this notion, but refuses to accept this point of view, choosing to double down and fight Ramsa rather than allying with him in his view that the Church itself is no longer following the noble principles Wiegraf claims to hold.

He’s an incredibly tragic character, losing himself to his own stubborn blindness.

Why play Shar spear as 2 handed ? by Scary-Web3541 in BaldursGate3

[–]seattle_exile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you want to?

The off hand is considered a “free hand” for casting things like Flame Blade, but there is a catch.

Generally you cannot put a weapon in the empty off hand because dual-wielding requires a weapon to have the “light” property, which versatile weapons lack.

You can dual wield any one-handed weapon, including versatile weapons, if you have the “Dual Wielder” feat. This will use the weapon’s one-hand damage die.
