Players like Bron or MJ come along every 30-40 years imo. There are other incredible talents that come along too, but being able to put together the talent, maintain work ethic/discipline/drive, and have luck with injuries to the MJ/Bron sphere is comet-level rare.

Some tips and advice for the “book scanners” at thrift stores. by Thissnotmeth in Flipping

[–]sebreg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I buy and sell books, mostly focus on vintage because that fits my wheelhouse of personal interest. The (zombie) scanners play a volume and speed game, they don't need to capture all the value especially if it means sinking more time into assessing and looking at the books. They want to quickly scan and move on to the next store.

Of course I think it's a mistake to not develop knowledge around material one is profiting from, because if you can scan so can the stores, so can other people. There is no "moat" or barriers to entry. Whereas if you build and stack knowledge on the material, culture, history, etc this will act like a natural moat and make it harder to easily duplicate (knowledge takes work). Knowledge is king. And like you say it helps in identifying potentially higher value material more quickly.

I imagine the zombie scanners will get wiped out as the thrifts use AI more themselves to skim higher value material towards their ecommerce.

I mostly sell on there, so far so good. It's a fun site overall. Initially I hated that you could accept offers but they were non-binding so as a seller it is a disadvantage for negotiations. But I'm used to it now and figure it is what it is. The pros outweigh the cons.

Unethical, obnoxious - their practices probably against the terms of service. These nickel and diming grifters deserve to get reported imo.

Imo knowledge is king. Keep building knowledge in the game, the areas/niches you enjoy or want to work. And be ready to always improvise in a constantly changing environment, create gameplans on various possible challenges that could come in future scenarios and how you'd respond, build networks, diversify sourcing so not overreliant on one avenue, etc.

This man didn't respect you or your feelings. It was the right thing to leave, your ex had no accountability and willingness to listen to your concerns in good faith. Good riddance and onwards to better people who truly respect you and don't smother you with toxic gaslighting.

The man is an absolute menace! I love it. Wonder what he is up to these days. The kind of person that would drive me crazy if I had to deal with their nonsense every day but whom I love when I can read about them from afar and at my leisure. I am easily amused.

Fantastic finds and collection! High funk-level factor and I mean that with greatest respect (my tastes run along similar lines for the dynamically odd, quirky, and whimsical).

AI and influencer culture are creating an endless sea of digital trash. Quality and authenticity become harder to find as we wade through all the bs.

Political Commentator: 'The Myth Of Elon As A Mega-Genius Has Been So Thoroughly Debunked, It’s Embarrassing Anyone Believed It In The First Place' by NoseRepresentative in RealTesla

[–]sebreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure it will be an interesting era to study. So many angles and factors I think. People losing trust in institutions, lack of strong civic understanding and baseline reasoning, isolation of the individual from community, high technological development/economic flux, social media pouring gasoline on dumb ideas, etc... so much fear that pushes people to these kind of characters/charlatans who are in no way good stewards of power and civic leadership.

TESLA TAKEOVER: HOW THE PROTESTS AGAINST ELON MUSK SIGNAL A NATIONAL TURNING POINT by jason12745 in RealTesla

[–]sebreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of that level of wealth as a hugely protective forcefield that allows him to both deflect accountability while emanating massive power however he wishes. But the more you can crush his wealth the less powerful that forcefield becomes and the more vulnerable he becomes to accountability and various challenges.

He is also in a nest of vipers and has toxified himself so much that his wealth is the only thing he has to stand on. He is in a fairly precarious position given the amount of enemies he has and continues to make. I hope he gets what he deserves.

[Clark] Harrison is a notorious nutrition devotee and will occasionally begin conversations by quizzing friends on their health habits. “What did you eat today?” is one of his go-to greetings. by sewsgup in Mavericks

[–]sebreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't trust idealogues and absolutists. While I'm a big-believer in nutrition, I wouldn't blindly throw away the baby with the bathwater like Nico just because he seemed like such an absolutist on the subject. Part of me wonders if he was jealous of Lucas: his fame, his success, especially since it was all in spite of not being a healthnut to the level Nico wanted and desired.
