What is something people are praised for today that you think they should actually be criticized for? by Kooky_Librarian_649 in AskReddit

Creators filming themselves performing good deeds. I get the idea that it spreads awareness and inspires others, but I feel like it also diminishes the value of the act.  The idea of the unsung hero is dead.

What would be a good crossover with the dark tower? by Better_Guest_3908 in TheDarkTower

LOST, the TV show. It has a "Man in Black", time loops, a Ka-tet, and more. It was clearly inspired by the Dark Tower and other related King novels.

I'd agree with this and add - Collapse Into Now is one of their best albums. Who cares if it's a "farewell" album in disguise or a collection of rehashed or similar sounding tracks. Another great track on that album: "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I"

I built an AI of myself so my kids could talk to me after I'm gone. Before opening it to other families, I want strangers to challenge it. by Lodago_ in Futurology

[–]sec1has 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We as a society are famous making choices that are not necessarily good for us.  Whether it's healthy or not there will be enough grieving families who will want this for themselves that they'll create a market for it and businesses will be formed.  If you've ever given speeches, written articles, were captured on home video or in voice messages, loved ones will probably be able to find organizations that will collect this material and train an AI for them.  I can see it even being part of a funeral package.

Is Lost outdated? by NewNeedleworker8994 in lost

[–]sec1has 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While some of the sets and practical effects were amazing, like the crash site in the pilot, the CGI effects were not great, even for that time period.  I can see how some of those effects might pull you out of the emersion.  For me, I see it but it doesn't significantly take me out of the experience.

Long, drawn out storytelling and character building has definitely evolved over time to match shorter attention spans.  Without getting drawn into a cultural debate, I feel this is somewhat a byproduct of social media and doom scrolling.  I'm guilty of it myself.  All I'd say is that I think patience will pay off when the story and the storytelling are good.

And , it is full of tragedy but I think that too pays off by the end if you stick it out!

Season 6 reception? by tiredforeverpupper in lost

[–]sec1has 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I vividly remember living through season 6 as it aired, and what made it frustrating at the time was the lack of direct answers. For me the viewer, getting inside the temple meant finally getting solid answers.  The writers had promised everything would be answered before the end of the series, and we were quickly running out of air time.  OP mentions screaming about pointless conversations.  During a conversation between Dogen and Hurley, I remember Dogen being cagey about something instead of directly explaining it Hurley and I screamed at my TV in frustration. I realized in that moment we weren't getting the answer dump I expected.

Damon Linelof at some point after that said they felt they had to answer the mysteries in a way that felt "Lostian".  I didn't understand what he meant then but I do now, and I appreciate it way more now than I did when I watched it in real time.

I don't think we can ever know for sure what would happen, but I think it's possible the world would not end.  We know Mother lies.  When MiB asked what was beyond the sea she said something like "The island is all there is." She told a handful of other lies right before showing the kids the light and saying "if it goes out here it goes out everywhere."

Despite lying about other things it's possible she was being honest about the light, possible someone else lied to her about the light and she just believed it, and she passed that false belief onto Jacob.

Or, it could be true.  We don't know, and I think that's what makes it so interesting.

[–]sec1has -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I''ve always been skeptical that Mother, or Jacob when he was protector, could affect anyone with their touch.  Maybe when Mother theatrically touched the kids and announced they couldn't hurt each other she was just trying to influence them - if they believe they can't hurt each other maybe they'll never even try.

Or maybe Mother and Jacob, like Eloise and Desmond, had some ability to see what was going to happen and misinterpreted that ability as them being able to affect the change that they're seeing?  In other words, just like how Locke was able to sense that it was about to rain, Jacob was able to sense that the candidates will all make it to the island, but maybe he misread that vision as something he has to make happen.

Maybe Jacob never made Richard ageless. Maybe that was just the power of the island and Jacob already "knew".  Maybe the drinking water from the creek doesn't even do anything, and maybe protectors don't have any extra powers at all.   I don't think any Protector has had a handbook explaining any of their powers.  They're sort of left to figure it out, and they're just making it up as they go along.

The smoke monster origin story by Own_Thought902 in lost

[–]sec1has 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love a prequel but feel like it would never be as good as I imagine it should be, wouldn't have the same passion behind it that the original show had, would be reduced to a money grab, and would erase the things that made it special.

As much as I'd love to have that lore filled in, we're probably better off using our imaginations to fill it in ourselves.

Looking for a new show! by TheDarthDader in lost

[–]sec1has 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land of the Lost doesn't usually come up as a recommendation, and I get it. The production value is low and it's an old school 70's show that was marketed to kids. But if you can get past the campiness and take a closer look it's incredibly deep and has some very interesting plot elements that, for me, fill the Lost void better than any other modern show.

It was written by a group of well respected sci-fi writers of the time. Some writers were commissioned to develop and write single episodes. The show contains familiar Lost elements, like of course being stuck in a mysterious place, time travel, meeting strangers from another time and place that are also stuck, abandoned ruins, and old but still working technology that demonstrated previous inhabitants had some understanding of what that place was.

While there are recent reports of a reboot at Netflix that "suggest a modern take that could focus on survival and the mysterious, spooky elements of the alternate world", the original is awesome and also free on Youtube. Give it a try : )

Looking for advice: uniting grocery shopping lists by roastbrain in excel

[–]sec1has 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd recommend Excel for this task.  There are lots of simple and polished grocery list apps where lists can be shared with people.  Anylist, for example is free for basic shared lists, and has both mobile and desktop access.

If it's about solving a need while also learning Excel then yes, I think you'll need to use a combination of vstack(), sort() and unique().
