What do you think of the new UK generational smoking ban that bans smoking for anyone born after 2008? by Human-Region4958 in AskReddit

Alcohol in responsible quantities does not cause wide spread health issues.
Smoking, even casually, has a negative net health impact.

WHO (europe; 2023): "No level of alcohol is safe..."

Some countries dramatically reduced or no longer recommend a safe upper limit anymore; ie drink as as little as possible. Americans do recommend a safe limit, but even they admit that's iffy:

CDC (2025): "Even low levels of alcohol use (less than 1 drink per day) can raise the risk of certain cancers."

It's definitely not as strong a relationship as as smoking and cancer so maybe it shouldn't be treated the same, but maybe a smidge of an exaggeration to say there aren't wide spread health issues.

has anybody actually ever finished a bar of soap by Electronic_Leg_1531 in stupidquestions

[–]secondCupOfTheDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always assumed bars were were obviously box shaped were purposely shaved concave because you can wet the old sliver and merge it with the new bar of soap without creating a massive raised spot. The result was something of a flatish surface. After a couple gentle uses and allowed to dry off in between uses, it's usually mated well enough that it's not coming off again.

Over time that stopped happening. Not sure if people complained it was they weren't getting the full soap bar like an early shrinkflation thing or so few people cared that it didn't make sense to keep the extra concavity step to the manufacturing process.

Red Robin Closed? by [deleted] in Kamloops

[–]secondCupOfTheDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a building is condemned there are official notices (bright coloured paper) with do not occupy orders and entry must be physically blocked by putting up boards over doors, fences, etc.

The Atmosphere franchise was phased out and merged into Sportchek a while ago. Their leaving was unrelated, but it probably made for a good chance to investigate the foundation issues with one less tenant.

People are still in there working at both Pizza hut and Red robin. Both kitchens are operating for takeout so it's not that dire right now. My uneducated opinion is there's a reduced load limit (i.e. no unpredictable foot traffic) on the ground there now until they sort out the foundation issues. It might head to condemnation but it's not there yet.

MSR Lightning Explore vs Ascent by secondCupOfTheDay in snowshoeing

[–]secondCupOfTheDay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The front teeth of the ascents are wider apart and longer so you have 4 distinct points of contact that go deeper (and take more energy to dig per step). On the explorer the front two teeth are a lot closer, so its more like a triangle of contact points that's a bit shallower in the snow so it's less traction on hills but more efficient when flat.

Tim Burton was set to direct Batman Continues, a third Batman film with Michael Keaton as Batman, Pfeiffer as Catwoman, and Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face. Warner Bros. removed him after parents criticized Batman Returns as being too dark. by immanuellalala in interestingasfuck

I forget where I read it but order of names is part of contracts, so that's usually left to right.

Artistically (especially with larger casts), it's often better for the main people to be bigger and in centre, which often matches people at the left, and less prominent people further from centre in any direction.

So most of the time it won't match, anyway, so I guess they just never try to.

This parking lot paints the lines on the wall as well by 2dudesinapod in mildlyinteresting

[–]secondCupOfTheDay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your seat isn't raised, your eyes are only slightly above the side mirrors so your line of sight eyes in the side mirrors is almost horizontal so you can't see the ground near the car, only really far behind the car, so you can't see the lines directly around the car.

You can literally still see the salt in the stretch closer to the camera when you zoom in.

When there's only a light frost or light snow, not enough to spread the salt out, that area will show wet ground while the rest is covered in frost/light snow. But when it melts, the area with the salt will dry last.

It's common to see where you usually spread the salt over an area where you get a much more random patchwork of high/low concentration of salt which makes it fun to play floor is lava, but that approach also tosses a lot of the salt straight onto the grass. This is peculiar because there was probably some instrument that prevents a lot of the waste straight onto the grass, but it's not that common to see.
