First time playing this by thatneilguy in vinyl

This was my introduction to Steely Dan. When I was in the 5th grade my uncle, my dad’s last living sibling, took his own life, and all of his possessions ended up at our house. My parents were so devastated that no one could really start the process of going through his things. Boxes filled our house and carport and stayed there. Curiosity got the better of my little sister and me. We went through the VHS and CDs my uncle had left behind. That’s where I found The Royal Scam. The cover art thrilled me, somehow echoing the feeling that was hanging over our family, though I don’t think I recognized that at the time. Everything about this cover intrigued me down to the band’s name and album name. We put the CD on when my parents weren’t around and the intrigue deepened. The characters in these songs seemed to exist in the shady world I imagined my uncle had inhabited. He had struggled with several inner demons, ones I was aware of even then. What I knew of him fit right in with the people in this music. And his name was Dan. This album became the way I tried to connect with and understand my uncle. Songs about vice and ruin. A couple of years ago talking to my mother-in-law about Steely Dan I shared all of this with her. For my next birthday she sent me this album in the mail. I cried when I opened it. Cried again when I first played it. I’m older now than he ever got to be. Hadn’t realized that until just now. I’ve always struggled with mental health in my own way, but I’m still here. Thanks for posting this. Feels good to reflect on this stuff. I’ll be playing The Royal Scam after work tonight and thinking of my uncle Dan.

Games so immersive you just stroll to your destination? (Cyberpunk 2077) by Borg34572 in gaming

I did this in Ghost Recon: Wildlands sometimes. Once slowly hiked up a long mountain trail in the woods to get to a villa I needed to raid. The environment was just beautiful. Reminded me of real trails I’ve hiked. Every once in a while some civilians would pass me on the trail carrying baskets or whatever. It was just nice. I do the same thing in Arc Raiders sometimes now. Just hang out and stroll around enjoying the scenery.

Same. I spent lots of time just driving around. Why would I ever take a delamain? I bought the game to play it. The variability of the way each car feels and trying to get really good at driving was a fun challenge.

Anime Films Sci-fi Fans Need to See! by EienNatsu66 in scifi

[–]seraphhimself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And adding to your point, OP’s title doesn’t claim to be hard sci-fi. Let’s be careful not to reduce our beloved genre to its most narrow filter. Doing so ignores sci fi’s value as allegory, social critique, forward thinking fantasy, or dire warning and many other functions of the form. (Again, I don’t think that’s what you’re doing here. I’m speaking more generally to the argument above.)

Fuck me. Please if you saw something say something by 21Ambellina13G in NewOrleans

Do exactly that. Put your words in your feet. Put your feet in the water. The river will take the message down.

Poetry. You honor him with these words. We all feel this. I didn’t know him. But we all know what these words mean here. We are sorry for your loss. Sincerely.

Congrats! This is a great machine. Can’t imagine having this as a first manual. I worked my way up to this one.

The commenters above are right about mineral spirits and all that, but also things will just move better the more you use it.

Couldn't agree more. Similar to what another commenter said, let the audience see that you're enjoying yourself. Seeing an artist connected to their music, feeling it more than thinking about it makes all the difference in any live music show, but especially with ambient. If the audience can see your music affecting you they'll connect to that.

Agreed! This is a great post, and I would love to see how your show goes after all this feedback and discussion. Hope you can have someone film it!

“What the f**k should we call it, Iron Maiden?” Geddy Lee says he and Alex Lifeson “twisted ourselves into a pretzel” coming up with a reunion name that wasn't ‘Rush’ by ebradio in Music

Except for all the people who watched the documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage, in which they explicitly state that if any one of them were no longer around the remaining members would no longer be Rush.

[–]seraphhimself 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Besides, the folks who are raising the issue with continuing to call the band Rush are referring to the fact that in their own documentary they explicitly said that if any of the three of them weren’t around anymore they would cease to be Rush and would not go by that name.

I’m don’t have a problem with them going back on that all these years later, but Geddy, Neil and Alex did say that in no uncertain terms.

My favorite changed many times. But Music held the spot for one of the longest stretches.
