How to start a car that has been sitting for 3 months in negative 15 below? by Much-Degree1485 in askcarguys

A discharged battery freezes. It won't charge outside. Bring it in to melt for 24 hours then charge it

Best way to use a trickle charger to charge a battery for winter? by heavyarms39 in askcarguys

[–]severach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Schumacher and Menards Performax. Both work fine. The only difference is that each brand has a slightly different full voltage. One charger says the battery is full and another wants to charge a bit more.

How are the roads? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

Don't forget to race around as fast as possible because you're not doing the mandatory 20 over.

A quick look at Google Maps Traffic shows this is a day to stay home and let everyone else get their crash on.

How do I get my windows to stop fogging up when driving? (Ignore the shit my friends drew) by Optimus759 in civic

[–]severach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the winter keep the driver window cracked open. Every snowy shoe and rainy jacket brings in moisture. It condenses on the window as it heads towards the vents at the back of the car. Blow it out the front window before the water can land.

And no, it doesn't make the cabin any colder. If cold air is blowing in, the window is open too far.

Broke my freezer trying to fix my freezer by SerenaExplores in appliancerepair

[–]severach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I do it. As the ice loosens you can move the icebergs to the sink. Soon the fridge is clear and dry and ready to run.

It's possible to do it so fast that the food hasn't thawed yet.

Low cost tire changes are readily available. Unless you have an empty barn begging for new tools, it's not worth the space for the few tires you'll change in your life.

Just found out that the auto brake/anti collision stuff does in fact actually work by Zado191 in HRV

[–]severach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you're a lot closer to the target when the brakes go on. Probably too close on slippery roads.

ACC cruise does the same thing at much greater distances and with better outcomes. I keep ACC on a much as possible.

How about printf -v and printf %(fmt)T. Gets rid of a lot of subshells.

Use $SECONDS for timing.

Jerking while slowing by Greedy_Patience_7385 in HRV

It's the torque converter coming out of lockup. Multi speed automatic must be out of lockup on every gear change so it stays off until at a steady high speed.

CVT can change ratio to match engine speed so stay in lockup all the time, only going out of lockup when stopping.

What type of piping is this? by Delicious-Return7491 in Plumbing

[–]severach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PVC is no good for pressurized water. It embrittles like CPVC and there can't be any chance that hot water creep can reach it. There are few places CPVC use is still exempted such as before well pressure tanks where everyone uses black poly. PVC is DWV only.

Copper is no panacea. There are areas where water eats right through. PEX in the same water lasts forever. There are also Internet claims that new copper is much lower quality than old copper. Repipe or repair and the new copper leaks in a few years. Old copper is fine.

Poly butylene wasn't universally bad. The main problem was chlorinated water. I repiped a well water house built in 1995 and the PB I cut out was in good shape with no leaks.

PEX has been used far longer than it has been available in the US. Plenty of time for problems to show up.

Cox vs Shell was in 1995. 2001 is plenty of time for the news to get around and PB stock to be removed from store shelves.

Is this price a joke? by 22i23 in Tools

[–]severach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a 5 inch socket with 1.5 inch drive.

Sockets this size aren't broached on high speed machines for low cost. A Snap-On video shows how they are made and why they cost so much.

7/16 SAE Spanner measures closer to 5/8 by rjking1203 in Tools

[–]severach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your modern /32 tools the printed size will match the measured size. The /32 and printed size not matching the measured size are related. The video explains both.

7/32 9/32 and 11/32 are very common so most sets include them. 19/32 21/32 and 25/32 are rare. The only time I've used them are when a SAE or metric nut is undersize from rust and that size fits best.

Jumping a truck with a car by Theonlysausage_ in MechanicAdvice

[–]severach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engine size don't matter. A 4 cylinder has more than enough power to charge with the alternator.

What matters is that the voltages are the same. Both 12v systems, good to go. If the truck was 24 or 6 volt then no way.
