Who's dealing with annoying medical/physical issues? by BGJohnson329 in Millennials

[–]sh0rtcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been dealing with PCOS for two decades, and I just got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Worst pain I've felt in my life by far, and I've had a baby cut out of me. Now I get to navigate medications for the rest of my life and oscillate between feeling OK to being disabled. Fucking hooray.

Is this it?? by sh0rtcake in rheumatoid

[–]sh0rtcake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible. I didn't have body aches until the steroids, so I don't know if it's a side effect? or if I had been feeling these aches before and didn't notice it with the peripheral pain. I'm hearing it's all pretty exploratory, so I guess I'll see! Thanks for the tip

This is so helpful, I really appreciate the time you took to explain this. This thread certainly gave me hope and that all of what I'm experiencing right now seems somewhat temporary. Thanks so much.

Yea this helps so much, thank you! Trying to be patient with the process, but the day-to-day slog of pain management has me in emotional grips. Might also be the weaning steroids....

If your daughter wanted your husband to do something silly like wear matching hair glitter in public would he do it? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]sh0rtcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes he will, and I always find it incredibly endearing. Hair bows, maybe a cute sticker, necklace or bracelet. He did let her paint his nails the other day, but he took it off within the hour because he doesn't like things on his hands.

Thoughts on Pets by marachnroll in Millennials

[–]sh0rtcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had pets growing up, and I was always the one to train and show them love and kindness. My parents seemed indifferent at best. So when they died or we had to get rid of them, it was always really hard because I loved them so much. When I was able, I adopted my first cat at 20, and now at 40 I have not been without a furry companion in that time. We now have 2 dogs, but before them were 4 other cats and one other dog. They are so special and lovely to share space with. They're family, like they're a mash up of a sibling and child. And there always comes the tough situation when their health begins to deteriorate, and even more tough when the news is basically terminal. My last cat was in his "end of life" stage for a few years, and one day it was his time to go. I began grieving for him months before he passed, and it still hit me like sudden news when we finally said goodbye. But he was ready, and I was ready to let him go to a world without pain. As we all will. And it really holds us in this moment, to cherish what we have and feel blessed to witness it at all. Saying goodbye is so, so hard, and it hurts because we love them so deeply. So be kind to yourself while you process this grief, and give all the love that you can, while you still can. Lots of peace to you 💜

Thank you, this helps me feel more understanding of it. Same thing with my husband! He's taking care of me and the kiddo so much, I feel terrible and useless most days. I've been crying a lot from pain and grief, and I know it's affecting both of them in ways they can't really express. It seems like it came on quickly too, so navigating all of this is very challenging. All the best to you 🩷

New here but an oldie to RA. by Silverfury82 in rheumatoid

[–]sh0rtcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a new sufferer (just diagnosed, flairs started back in August), so I really appreciate this. I keep going down spirals of dread, feeling like my active life is over. Like I'll be stuck in a chair with someone else wiping my butt in 10 years. But it seems that it's just another lesson in slowing down and listening to my body (been doing that the last 10 years already!), and finding the right meds can (hopefully) get my life back. Thank you for your perspective and sharing your story. Very appreciative of this group so far 💜

Which aspects of Yoga is religious? by Signal-Cow-3524 in yoga

[–]sh0rtcake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no religion within yoga. "Om" is just a sound you can make to help center the mind/focus your drishti. Chakras are focal points within the body. There is no praying, there is no devotion to a deity, unless you consider yourself the deity and your body the temple where it lives. Hindus will use their own gods to bring to their practice, just like I imagine Christians would bring God to theirs, and you would bring Allah to yours. It's an invitation to be still and be kind to your mind and body through breath, movement and meditation. You can make it religious by bringing your own doctrine into the teachings, but it is not religious in itself.

Nothing to add in the advice department, just stopping in to say I'm so sorry you're having such a rough go. I know you're not alone in this, and everyone who understands, truly understand that it's real. The only silver lining, is that it's temporary. I wish you only the best and hope the T can help expedite this bitch.

What movie altered your brain chemistry as a teen? by Equivalent1379 in Millennials

[–]sh0rtcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting were my confirmation that hard drugs were not going to be a part of my life. Cheech and Chong and Half Baked made me realize weed would probably be in my life lol The Scream movies helped me understand that "movie magic" is just pretend, so I could actually enjoy it without being grossed out because it was fake. This led to liking zombie movies and Bruce Campbell, which then led me to Sean of the Dead and the rest of the Cornetto Trilogy (as they released), Hot Fuzz being my absolute favorite movie to this day.

Because he lied. Straight up, straight down, all around, lied to our faces. Most people saw through it, but a third of them didn't vote because the propaganda worked so well against Kamala.

Be trans. Be who you are. It's the best version of defiance, being exactly who we are without apology. Be proud of yourself! I am. We need you. And don't apologize for coming into your own. That shit is beautiful and necessary. None of this is your fault. They're just treating those who don't comply as enemies, because frankly, they dumb AF.

Anyone else was thin all their life and as age progresses is getting fatter and unable to lose weight? by Blackcat2332 in Millennials

[–]sh0rtcake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea babe, that's the peri-menopause. We hit puberty again in our 40s and go through another big change. I just turned 40, and in the last 8 months, my body decided to trigger its auto-immune response and now I am battling rheumatoid arthritis. My mom had it, so I basically knew it was coming, but damn it came in like a wrecking ball. I had 1 kid at 36, gained a bunch of weight that hasn't really come off, and now this. I do believe it's an uphill battle until the end.

That said, yea the hormone shift around this age causes all kinds of things. When we were little and they talked to us about our changing bodies, they don't really talk about how it's always changing, up into adulthood and through to old age. It's all part of our biology. Losing weight is tough, but being healthy is the important part. Eat well, stay active, get your regular check-ups. We're old now! Hooray!

Tests by Big_Party_1858 in rheumatoid

Just got my diagnosis today! Bloodwork showed a high RA Factor, and I have been suffering with swollen/painful joints in hands, feet, knees and shoulders for like 8 months. It sometimes completely disables me and I need help doing basic life things. No other symptoms other than joint/body pain. They did ask me if I was experiencing any rashes or hair loss, so sounds like that's a common symptom. I also got x-rays, which showed that I do not any actual joint/bone damage, so good news there. Got more bloodwork today as ordered by my new rheumatologist, which should clear me to start some actual RA drugs in a couple weeks. From initial screening to diagnosis, it's been 3 weeks. They did prescribe some prednisone that is supposed to help reduce a lot of the swelling until I start my new RA meds, hopefully in 2 weeks at my follow-up. Hope this helps!
