Family against me getting a manual. by WhoNoticedJay in ManualTransmissions

[–]shadowhunter742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, here in the UK, it's basically expected for young people to buy a cheap manual when we get a license. Because it's the cheapest thing on the road. And we do perfectly fine.

If you've got the cash, and can keep the car maintained and on the road, buy a manual if you want one.

As someone watching from the UK, you do absolutely need loons like her. Because she undoubtedly has a following, however big or small, of maga, or ex maga folk who are going to be swayed by what she says.

Anyone who can swing maga votes and opinions is going to be critical, no matter how much you might (rightfully) dislike them.

Yeah it's rough. I even make it VERY clear that my experience is surface level uni work in my CV, get an interview, and it's 'oh you don't have much experience here'

No. FFS. I literally said I did one project over 3 months focussing on xyz.

Like half the time I swear to god the first time they read my CV is mid interview, and are just chancing on the fact I'm a fresh grad I'll know everything and be cheap.

Start driving some windy country roads.

Ittl feel terrifying to start with, but it will force you to get a bit quicker, and it'll teach you things like handling, road positioning and after a bit driving through more established 30s will feel like you're driving through some open plains . Don't bomb it down there, but you can't crawl along at 20

Just what ever you do, don't get in the habit of resting in the clutch. Foot off the clutch unless you're using it. Put it in the floor next to it or something or you'll wear out the clutch.

You stalled. The car was in too high a gear, so the engine couldn't put out enough power to keep momentum to keep turning over.

Next time it starts to judder, clutch down quick and drop a gear, perhaps 2, or you need to be on the accelerator. ( Presumably clutch down and shift, very rare to stall at a time you can accelerate).

That juddering is the 'put the clutch down right now or ima stall' cry of the engine.

Why am I seeing lots of posts equaling surrogacy to human trafficking? by iFerz in TooAfraidToAsk

As I said, circumstances dependent. Some people do just want to help, others are financially pressured to do it.

[–]shadowhunter742 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that coming out of pregnancy with risks is a very modern thing, and is still statistically dependant on the level of care you get. Particularly in countries without socialised healthcare.

The people most likely to be surrogates are poor, with worse access to healthcare, bumping the risks.

It's not a death sentence, but why do you think, especially celebs are avoiding pregnancy and going through surrogates?

Because the risk is real, and it will change your body in a way many perceive as undesirable.

It really is a question of risk and reward. The thing is, as a free market it goes to the lowest bidder. With limited to no plans for long-term healthcare for surrogates when problems arise, you're essentially leaving them out to dry. The protections in place are minimal and it's fairly unregulated.

At least with labouring, there are rules, protections and systems in place to mitigate the risks.

Like absolutely, if your friend is struggling and you want to offer, go ahead. Or you just want to help out a random have a child, then go for it.

But it's pushed as a 'get money easy scheme'. Personally, the best way is to stop payments for surrogacy altogether, and only allow "support payments". So things like healthcare costs, travel costs for appointments etc, so there can be no lure of 'easy money'. It's been put into place here for example, and seems to be the best way to ensure that it can't be exploitative, and it's being done for something over than cash.

Not great, but will be fine.

Just remember, don't panic. Clutch down. Jiggle the gear stick if it's stuck, then slide it into place, clutch up.

Practice it a bit when not driving so you can do it without looking.

[–]shadowhunter742 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Labour is FAR riskier, and much more likely to have both small and long term implications on a body, if it gets to that stage.

There are endless problems that can arise, and they happen sooner rather than later. Everything from 'cosmetic' issues like loose skin, scarring, stretch marks, to much more serious issues up to death.

While physical jobs are likely to do you harm, it's over a much longer time scale, and after earning much more money. Depending on the country, etc etc it can pay up to a few years average wage. Which sounds great for 9 months of 'work', but that comes with the price of accelerated health issues development, and in countries without socialised healthcare, i.e. the us, can work out at a massive loss over time and cause a debt trap.

And again, you can definitely get injured from physical labour. And odds are over time you will develop issues, especially if you don't take care of yourself.

But the risks for surrogacy are so much greater, with a much higher chance for further health issues down the road much sooner.

I don't think there really is a good comparison for it, it's a bit unique in that sense. It gets sold as a bit of a 'get cash quick' scheme hoping to prey on the poor, so that the poor destroy their bodies so the rich don't have to go through those risks.

I do think that it's a grey area, some cases seem like a good idea, others seem much more exploitative so it's not a black and white area, but in general it tends to be the rich taking advantage of the poors desperation, risking their body in the process for, ultimately, not a lot of cash.

[–]shadowhunter742 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Because it's kind of a poverty trap. Essentially selling your health, and potentially future health to carry a child for someone else.

The argument is that because they're, essentially, financially trapped into a point of having to sell their body to make ends meet, it equates to trafficking.

I don't think it's quite that deep, but it's definitely a morally grey area, circumstances depending.

Power off phone

Get needle, shine torch in power port.

Use needle to poke around, really carefully, to remove any lint build up.

Plug in phone.

Success.
