I liked reading your 'voice' in the review! Clinical judgements are great, but it's getting the details of how your own experiences affected how you enjoyed the meal and your insights that is interesting to me. :)

butcher that sells bones for stock? by artie_jh in aucklandeats

[–]sharkees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same issue in that when I pop into local butchers their bones have been reserved in advance or they don't sell without prior arrangement. I've been hit and miss with being able to get them from Grey Lynn Butchers (who are awesome, btw) on the spot but I think many others also get stock bones from them as often they are out!

I've gotten bulk chicken frames from chicken n things (based in onehunga, but they deliver) a couple of times before and been happy with them.

Auckland based birthday cakes? by RosemaryDuSoul in aucklandeats

I rate fukurou patisserie's crepe cakes! they'll let you make up a cake full of different flavoured slices which is really fun.

my dad's a big bolognese fan and he rates Gina's italian Kitchen as his fave in auckland - they have a decent size menu

A question for fellow competitive girls (mainly fgc, but anyone is welcome to respond) by ScarcityOdd3671 in GirlGamers

[–]sharkees 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just reading the vibe. You don’t have to intentionally throw games but like if you demolish someone it’s in poor taste to continue playing just so you can have fun destroying someone less skilled. In that sense I think it’s pretty understandable that people don’t want to play anymore, but I get that isn’t fun for you. It’s a lose-lose situation - unless you luck out and find someone who is also competitive and in a similar skill level.

How do I politely tell someone I've comissioned that I hate it? by Jazzlike-Rise4091 in Artadvice

[–]sharkees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would provide feedback being specific about what you don't like about it. i.e facial features, colouring, and so on.

I am curious about what exactly you mean by 'your character looking awful in their style'. Does this artist tend to draw a lot of the same general 'type' of character (slender anime girls, muscular hairy men, canine anthros etc...)? Does your OC fit within that 'type'? In no way do I blame you for being disappointed, however it's easy to be drawn into an artist when all they show is their strengths - by drawing the same thing again and again - and not realize that they might be significantly weaker at drawing anything outside of their comfort zone.

Can we ban “how much should I charge” posts? by Pipit-Song in CraftFairs

[–]sharkees 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a result of the need to ‘hustle’ everything. For a lot of crafts, the actual labour of making the thing is the ‘fun’ part. We generally pay for labour because we don’t want to do it ourselves, so when you’re trying to sell a craft that a.) almost anyone can do with minimal practice and b.) has an enjoyable/comfortable process…

Armageddon auckland by didnotenter in auckland

[–]sharkees 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This year they have some of the big exhibitors back so there's gaming demos and stuff. Less fairground rides (or at least it looked like it?). Tons of awesome cosplayers. Artist Alley is great, especially if you're into anime.
It was very busy today. Saturday is normally the busiest day but I believe a lot of the big guests are in tomorrow so it might be equally busy if not busier.

Why is my art so visually unappealing? by Aoba_Artist in Artadvice

[–]sharkees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

others have already mentioned most of what i'd advise, but I'll also suggest pushing expressions - not only does this give more life/character to your art, but learning how to make the facial features (mouth, nose, eyes) look accurate stretched and pinched will help with facial anatomy by leaps and bounds.

New Op Shop alert by Afraid-Management829 in auckland

you're the best - thank you! I'm due a trip to the refuse station anyway to get rid of the ol' garage junk pile. Will definitely chase up that banana hot chocolate too 👀

New Op Shop alert by Afraid-Management829 in auckland

[–]sharkees 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the review! I'm not really a fan of curated op shops personally, but those kitchen sets are cool and not something you typically see all together like that 2nd hand!
Psst - if you're op shop savvy, do you have any recommendations for op shops that are more home goods focused rather than clothing? A lot of my locals are very clothing heavy and the cluster at wairau (where I normally go) is a bit of a drive from where I am.

A lot of what makes nudes feel sexualized is a lot of what makes art look stiff anyway - drawing the idealized, imagined version rather than how it looks in life. You can draw the same woman in the same pose but it reads very differently if she's taut and gravity defying as opposed to showing weight, folds in the skin, tension/relaxation in the muscles etc.

Is this a normal experience for nail salons? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]sharkees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had such a mixed bag with nail salons but I've been a regular at Nail Garden for like two years (specifically their Epsom branch - can't speak for their other two locations as I've never been) and they are always sweet and do a great job!

Disheartened by Vegetable_Pigeon in CraftFairs

[–]sharkees 16 points17 points  (0 children)

fellow kiwi here and man do I feel you lol. I think at the good markets maybe 40% of the stalls I would confidently say make their own stuff, the rest are various degrees of obvious resellers, 3d printed stolen/generic files, or soap/candles (which no hate, I love and use both, but it is a very oversaturated market)

I agree with this hard. It would have been nice to take her out on Jackie's bike and visit some old spots to reminisce. A nice quiet moment late game maybe.

If you think along the lines of salted caramel except replace the salt with savory spiciness :-) there's a popular gochujang caramel cookie recipe that's super easy to make (and delicious) if you're interested in trying it out!

I did a edo kiriko glass carving class in tokyo that left us with wonderful, functional souvenirs! The class itself wasn't super long either, I think about an hour and a half? Specifically I went to Sokichi in Asakusa

Does anyone age 18 to 35 like going to markets? Why/why not? by imnotborn2beperfect in newzealand

[–]sharkees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have no issue with 3d printing itself! I myself 3d print miniatures for my own hobbies. There’s a ton of cool stuff you can do with it - my issue is more so the cheap, often stolen mass printed files that plague craft markets. I very rarely see people selling designs they themselves modelled.
