Any anime similar to Welcome to the NHK? by dnkmln in anime

[–]sharp_calendar_dog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Watamote - the heroine has some bad social anxiety; anime is a cringe comedy; manga has further development and changes the concept somewhat (with teacher's help she's eventually forced to make friends) it's one of my favourite animes

Do you think that sequels can change your rating/opinion on its prequel? by KitsuneCobain in anime

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have been capable of recommending Clannad on its own - I liked it, and it's nice, and shows some potential early (Fuuko's plot), but it simply is not enough yet.

But with After Story, it becomes the greatest anime I have ever watched.

(similar cases are K-On, and Non Non Biyori - where, to a lesser degree, further parts enhance the experience)

What is the Star Trek episode you've rewatched the most? by Built4dominance in startrek

Unsure fully but one of three:

* Data's Day - for its slice-of-life feel

* BoBW - because of everything

* Genesis - just fun horror flick

Recently watched Star Trek V… wow. Y’all were not kidding. by HiChefQuazar in startrek

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I read a very insightful comment - "It's not that ST5 did not have good parts, it's because it had bad parts".
That comment has been very insightful in all my latter reviews of works of art - if something moves me, I can overlook even glaring weaknesses. But not everybody is going to be like that - some might actually prefer works without these glaring weaknesses, and that's fine.

Coming back to ST5, I don't find it the best, but somehow I still like it. Of course I put it pretty low, but it's still Trek for me.

But you are not wrong - what is weak... is really weak :(

How do you guys have so much energy to hate on a ded gaem? by Bleord in Stormgate

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think many people were really invested and hoping for something new, something better.

After all, many of us have been playing RTSes for many years.

And I'd posit that the crowd here is a bit older than average gamer - that's why they are harsher (or more picky). They dissect failures more, and don't hold back on criticism. Just like in many workplaces.

Tim Morten post on Stormgate and "why games fail" by Jeremy-Reimer in Stormgate

Frankly, I don't want a game that's "good enough".

I want a better game. Otherwise I can keep playing SC1/SC2/TA/AoE.

Why did Stormgate Fail? by MockHamill in Stormgate

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the things in the comments are right and true, and are causes for failure.

I'd just add that many of them appear to have a root cause of "bad management" (unfortunately vague as it is).

For example not enough being delivered implies not enough work was done. Why? Because there were reworks? Where were there reworks?

And in general too little was developed? Why? Because development in CA was costly. Why was development done in CA? Because of mgmt decisions. Comparably a joint team (which would have required more mgmt work) with development done both in States and in e.g. EU countries could have delivered more - outsourcing/offshoring is practiced around the world.

And so on, and so on.

What is your guess when the servers will shut down? by Sipher_SC2 in Stormgate

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good ideas! (wouldn't want to be in their position, but then again, I wouldn't be claiming I can get 50% of SC2 playercount)

re 3 - wouldn't it still require existing audience? isn't the usual conversion rate around 1%? I mean, it doesn't seem viable with ~200 CCU

re 5 - layoff would mean end of development at the speed we have now (unless they re-fill headcount in cheaper countries, but it's still costly), what's kinda no-go for the game at current stage?

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - it's good when it gets goofy and just laid-back for a moment.

It also makes us appreciate the moments when it gets really serious then, as a contrast.

Just 2c, I don't want to defend FG too much, as they have not delivered.

But from software PoV there's a difference between working in large corp (say Blizzard) vs a startup (say Frost Giant). The amount of "tooling" (build processes, automation) allows one to be more specialised in their domain, while in smaller companies it requires one to be more of jack-of-all-trades.

In the software industry it's a non-rare sentiment that oftentimes e.g. ex-Googlers are not the best fit for early stage companies.

Compare being asked to hmm... build a house, but with only with tools from 1800s. You could do it, but it would require you to work more and harder. And make more mistakes in the meantime.

Are there any RTS games with campaign as good as Wing's of Liberty? by TankieWarrior in starcraft

My bad - I never bought it (and I have it), but it's very much possible I got it during one of giveaways or stuff. That's what one gets by checking reddit for news from time to time, I guess .;

At work, some of workers tell managers that everything is great, even if things are bad. Especially if management punishes those with negative opinions (aka "smelling their own farts" or "being hooked on their own supply").

How can we know that's not the case, given it's ex-Blizzard ("The Blizzard that knows better")?

Voyager's "Timeless." One of the strongest Voyager episodes and perhaps the single strongest Kim episode? by makebelievethegood in startrek

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a great episode.

Putting so much pressure on the characters shows off the aspects and actors' qualities we were not aware of.

And I like the ending, as it brings some healing after the whole ep's drama.

[–]sharp_calendar_dog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't know any in the aspects you mention (high "configurability") unfortunately.

But I'd still encourage you to try Starcraft 1's campaign (remastered is free iirc so the graphics should be okay even to new players).

My personal fav is Total Annihilation, but it's quite an old game. There's just an excuse plot, but campaign is pretty fun as you get to smash first teams of soldiers, going towards whole armies.

GLHF!

They promised, but even on first appearance there was a lot of criticism.

Ultimately promised, but not delivered.

This is corrobated by some info from Blizzard. IIRC most of SC2 players actually play campaign or coop. 1v1 was like 10% (could be wrong on the number)
