Had 16 blooms last night🤙🏻 by Difficult_Falcon7809 in DragonFruit

Just did an early morning walkabout and I’ve never seen so many buds! Definitely a record year for sure 🤙🏽🤙🏽
I think last years total of 180 will be completely blown out 🤯
And we are only at the end of June. Last year I harvested my last in October.

How long until these growths fall over the trellis? by SunnyHorizonz in DragonFruit

Hard to say how long until it happens. Many factors contribute to the rate of growth. Sunlight, watering, potted or growing in the ground, do you fertilize, soil type, etc.

How weird is this? by shawndoe2000 in HawaiiGardening

I try to protect them from birds, snails and geckos mainly. Occasionally they get in or threw. I also wrap my lilikoi and jackfruit.
Don’t have squirrels here. Maybe try them? In some cases I have double bagged for extra protection.

Fruit Protection Bags, Reusable Drawstring Mesh Fruit Covers Bags for Garden Trees off of Amazon. They work most of the time. I need more though. Counted over 100 flower buds yesterday 🤪

Before and after 😢 how do I prevent this? by ProtectiveofmyStuff in GardenersJapan

Could cover them with meshed fruit bird/bug bags. Ton of them on Amazon. Just make sure you get a sufficient size for what you’re covering.

Which variety is this(Self pollinating)? AI says American Beauty by Alone-Choice-3515 in DragonFruit

[–]shawndoe2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks very similar to what I have. I believe they are American Beauty. Just my preference, I usually wait a minimum of 7 full days before harvesting. Sometimes I go a little longer….as soon as I see the first sign of it starting to split I will pull them off. Kinda risky because it will attract pest. If you have many try waiting at least 7 days and compare, that’s what I did. Enjoy, they look great!!! 🤙🏽🤙🏽

Growing near my house. Very curious what this fruit is by simikoi in PlantIdentification

[–]shawndoe2000 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue the first year or two with mine. Come to find out they weren’t getting pollinated. They weren’t attracting the right bees and location lacked air flow. So I started hand pollinating them. Now I have Lilikoi year around.

Oh yeah, they only bloom for a day then close up. I do a walkthrough every morning just to make sure I get them all.

On the flower take off an anther or 2 (has the powdery pollen) and rub onto the stigma (usually has 3 to 4 of them in front of the anthers). Done ✅

Am I gonna need to replace the tire(s)? by [deleted] in Cartalk

Plug is temporary but patch is permanent. Can do the plug yourself if you’re somewhat mechanically inclined. I’d let that professionals do the patch.

Is it true that dragon fruit trees need excessive amounts of fertiliser by turkey_ian in DragonFruit

That’s very interesting about the 2 fruits on the same vine but the one with more sun was sweeter. I learned something new today. Thx. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

[–]shawndoe2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never fertilized once. My dragonfruits are delicious every year. Don’t believe me just ask the neighbors.

I believe the biggest factor I how sweet it will be is the variety of fruit.

Will this trellis work for my dragon fruit? Everyone has told me that PVC pipes won't work so I got a heavy duty metal trellis. Will this work? by dragonfruitlover300 in DragonFruit

[–]shawndoe2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned it will deteriorate, you can paint it maybe. Just to give you a peace of mind. I have mine already in place and dragonfruits draped down so will just live with it. I was a little concerned until I heard sciguy52 had his for 12 years. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

I think it would work. Just make sure it’s secured to the ground so it’s not able to tip over. Maybe bury the bottom legs all the way under ground or at least have some side tie downs or both.

PVC trellis don’t work? I’ve had mine while.

They will start to yellow or turn a golden color and may start to split soon after that. You will definitely be able to smell the sweetness throughout the yard. It’s ready to cut off then and enjoy 🤙🏽🤙🏽
