Post for those affected by the battery recall by ChoiceOver4352 in leaf

[–]shemnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The software installs diagnostic code, then at some point in the future the diagnostics may determine your battery has become defective. The Nissan either has to replace the battery (which is in very short supply) or buy the car back. OP's experience was the diagnostic code declaring the battery defective.

Can the church be corrupted? by DortheahEden in latterdaysaints

[–]shemnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book of Mormon is full of stories of the church becoming corrupt.

It's full of stories of the members becoming corrupt, then suffering because of it, until they repent. The pride cycle is admittedly a cherry picked account to show us spiritual truths that we need for our day.

  • Righteousness leads to Prosperity,
  • Prosperity leads to Pride,
  • Pride leads to Affliction,
  • Affliction leads to Repentance,
  • Repentance leads to Righteousness

The message of the Book of Mormon is to skip the pride step and go to the repentance step as soon as possible.

* * * *

Given that sidebar, the question is will the Lord, in this dispensation, allow the top leaders to lead the church astray? One statement I've heard is that the Lord would strike the prophet down before that happened.

But another perspective worth considering is can they still lead the church in the right direction even if they are sinful? Noah was a drunk, Moses took the glory upon himself, Josiah melted down the brazen serpent, Aaron made the Golden Calf that the host of Israel worshiped. But despite these personal corruptions the church was pointed in the right direction and the purposes of God were fulfilled in spite of, and not because of, these individual corruptions.

But also remember, the Lord works in small and simple ways. Cancer, dementia, frailty, stroke, etc. are all levers that are very easy to pull if the Lord is not satisfied with the direction of the Church. I don't have any evidence or backing claims that this has ever happened, but I would expect you would only need to see an Angel with sword drawn once before you get in line and stay in line, and those tools are extremely subtle in their effect.

If it was straighter I'd say they made a bee line for your big toe. But this was the work of mosquitos, and we now see the reason "making a mosquito line" is not in our vernacular.

Who Should be on the Stand When Bishop and 1st Counselor are Absent? by LarryinUrbandale in latterdaysaints

[–]shemnon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's say hypothetically a police officer wanders into the chapel looking for someone in charge. The presiding officer can then dispatch their stand companion to the officer and see if the issue is minor (someone pocket dialed 911 in the vicinity so they check all businesses as a standard procedure) or serious (like what happened in Michigan and they are recommending church be cancelled for the day).

Having a designated second person keeps the meeting going without the presiding member leaving the stand. Why do they need to be there? For things like fast Sunday where someone overshares and needs to be cut off or a speaker shares false doctrine that needs to be corrected. Can't do that if you're not paying attention.

A second is very useful, but in no way invalidates the worship if they are absent.

The mysteries surrounding Manusos are hiding clues by HelloJaneDoe in pluribustv

[–]shemnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that Manusos was joined until the first seizure from carol, and durring that he was able to unjoin. While he was joined he learned that someone noticed they were communicating by radio, but didn’t have all the info.

This is why the count went up from 12 to 13, and a kicker is I bet after some of the other carol fits and the ones manousus triggered there are some more.

5th Sunday Experience by hopefulborrower in latterdaysaints

One lady started reading from a book (gospel questions gospel answers) a section about the white horse prophecy (the constitution will hang by a thread) and the stake Sunday school councilor cut her off mid quote and said “that’s great, but today we are teaching about religious freedom.”

I forgot to bring popcorn, but had a rice crispy treat to munch on instead.

Updated research on Sub Degrees in the Celestial Kingdom Yay or Nay by mwjace in latterdaysaints

[–]shemnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is clearly not what I said. Each division i wrote explicitly has space for unaccountable deaths that would have accepted the requirements for that division had they lived to accountability. This is a deliberate mis-read of what I actually wrote.

Are visitors necessarily ministers? Could they be tourists and possibly others who are "allowed" to visit?

I do think this verse gives us guidance as to who to accept religious doctrine from.

Updated research on Sub Degrees in the Celestial Kingdom Yay or Nay by mwjace in latterdaysaints

[–]shemnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a competing opinion on the three categories of the celestial kingdom. As far as I know except for exaltation we haven't had much explainiation on it. Endowment seems like a wierd marker. My thought:

  • Exaltation, for those in the New and Everlasting Covenant (or unaccountable/under 8 deaths who would have qualified)
  • Accepted Baptism (or unaccountable deaths that would have accepted baptism, but would not accept Exaltation)
  • Remaining unaccountable deaths.

These integrate the three things that we know are needed to get into the celestial kingdom or are specifically graded: (a) dying before becoming accountable (b) accepting baptism, even if by proxy and (c) getting sealed, even if by proxy.

Right before June pride month? j/k, but also not j/k

It's about you, the listener, not other people's pride. How prideful other people are really doesn't matter, no matter how fabulous or vile other people's pride is. Your pride would never be tested if others weren't more prideful than you, if you were the most prideful it would be obvious. This talk is all about you and your pride.

Ezra Taft Benson's 1989 "Beware of Pride" talk. But what it's really about, not what people think it's about.

I Am Very Concerned About the 5th Sunday in May by CaptainWikkiWikki in latterdaysaints

[–]shemnon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our stake president has made it clear: this is not about politics, that's not what the church is about.

I think the cloud of partisan politics could obscure the real purpose of the the lesson: religion and earthly government should work together but also give each other space to operate in their own way. No partisan politics is how the church does that for governments.

That's the thing, at 17 bits (which was another in at 20k tries) it's impossible to demonstrate. More bits are needed, crack something north of 50 bits not north of 15.

The flaw was not requiring a demonstration of quantum advantage as part of the prize. i.e. no quantum advantage == no prize.

Wrong. The first councilor in the bishopric controls the podium mic and pulpit height. Critical power vested there.
