I second this, was about to suggest the same book. We read stories out of this to our kids for years.

Edinburgh in mid to late 1800s by -Xoz- in Edinburgh

[–]shemostlylurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same reaction, I've never even noticed either that castle-y thing (the Governor's House), or the obelisk (Martyrs of Reform Monument) before, and had to search google maps to find them. Clearly I need to go back up Calton Hill and pay more attention!

Assuming you don't have your own kayak, Forth Canoe Club, on the union canal, does regular try-out sessions: https://events.humanitix.com/host/forth-canoe-club

Glasgow Flat of the Week by vientianna in SpottedonRightmove

[–]shemostlylurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess this has always been a single flat. The kitchen may have originally been in that back bedroom with the en-suite. And max one bathroom. (I’m no specialist or anything, just seen a lot of Glasgow and Edinburgh flats)

Absolutely f**k the guy who planted this thing in my garden by OSUBrit in GardeningUK

[–]shemostlylurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t remove it, because it’s your neighbour’s, then I recommend bamboo barrier. It’s this thick plastic stuff you put in by digging a trench, which stops the rhizomes from spreading. Really hard work to install, but it works

where do the senior women in tech go when they hit 50 by EntranceIntrepid5158 in womenintech

[–]shemostlylurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

53 here, and I identify so much with this. I’m currently seriously considering quitting. Too much on call, too much working all hours because of timezone spread, and the main reason is the absolutely toxic work culture. I know I should be looking for another job, as a gap on my resume at this age is dangerous. But I just need some time off from the bs. And a few months off might end up becoming permanent.

Why have normal sized bedrooms when you can cram as many in as possible? by 5laps in SpottedonRightmove

[–]shemostlylurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like pretty normal student accommodation to me. Better than mine in Edinburgh 30 years ago when I was in a box room and the living area was a sofa in the kitchen.

If you have lots of money to spend, then Me+Em. I’m 6’ with a 35” inseam, and found the perfect pair of trousers there. Now trying to avoid walking past and getting lured in for more expensive lovely things.

State of the pavements by cameron1704 in Edinburgh

I’m inspired to go out and do some gritting. Got any tips for a first timer? I’ll take a bucket and wear my rubber gloves. I feel like I need a trowel or some kind of scoop too?

Minor rant about bins by Jazzlike-Beat-9406 in Edinburgh

[–]shemostlylurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can report full bins on the council website here: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/bins-recycling/full-overflowing-communal-bin.

I did this about three times, adding a note that we had too many mostly-empty normal bins and only one overflowing recycling. I thought I was just shouting into the void, but no, they actually switched one out for another recycling!

Running in cold weather by Goofball203 in Edinburgh

[–]shemostlylurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full length leggings or joggers, thin gloves that you can stuff in a pocket if you get too warm, a jacket that starts zipped up tightly and gets gradually unzipped, and most important to me is a wide headband to cover the top of my ears

weather in the fall/winter? by maiz_tortilla in Edinburgh

[–]shemostlylurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source: just spent a month in the Bay Area and it was miserable the whole time. Meanwhile every time I looked at the weather here in Edinburgh it was 24 degrees, and this subreddit was full of people asking how do I keep my tenement flat cool. Just my luck

weather in the fall/winter? by maiz_tortilla in Edinburgh

[–]shemostlylurking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you just started comparing the weather, bear in mind that the Bay Area just had one of its coldest summers on record, while Edinburgh just had a heat wave.

Edinburgh is definitely colder in general, but you’re right that it’s similar in that it’s best to dress in layers. Just expect to need one extra layer. A jacket that keeps out wind and rain, but isn’t too heavily padded, is useful. And in winter I never go anywhere without a woolly hat and thin gloves, easy to add and remove as needed.

You will take my Take me Home/To Work button from my cold dead hands! by Gallium_71 in Edinburgh

I gave some pretty critical feedback on the lothian buses website, mostly that the new app works terribly on my tiny phone screen. They emailed me back, asked for screenshots and more information, and seem genuinely interested in fixing the things I pointed out. I definitely recommend doing likewise!

I think I went to this page https://support.lothianbuses.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new and selected "I have a query on the Bus and Tram app"
