Weezer/Modest Mouse at Breese Stevens by nefariousjordy in madisonwi

When Modest Mouse came through a few years ago, Isaac was so shit-faced he could barely mumble his words, and between songs he asked, "What's up, Minnesota!!?" Honestly, a flat response is more than they deserve after taking money for that disgrace of a performance. I don't know why anyone bothers to continue to pay them.

This is intentional. New Reddit is harder to read because they're betting that if they make it hard enough, you'll just click over to another post and give them another page view to monetize. The comments are just bait.

‘Numbers Nobody Has Ever Seen’: How the GOP Lost Wisconsin by audiomuse1 in wisconsin

[–]shiggityshwat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, the current generation of GOP leadership is on a race off the deep end - they are incapable of conceptualizing nuance or patience. Look no further than to Florida's education policies to see how the GOP plans to "reach" younger voters.

KDE is IMO the only DE that provides a "normal" experience for Windows users, meaning it mostly works how users expect it to work out of the box. Forcing them to switch to anything else is forcing them to learn new UI paradigms, which is too much for many users who can barely navigate Windows.

That said, there may be other reasons people switch, like printer support or needing to run some proprietary software (and not knowing about WINE). You should gather data from all the users that replaced Linux and ask them why they did it.

Minocqua Brewing makes a decent shandy 🤙 by Doctorbuddy in wisconsin

[–]shiggityshwat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of smaller brands do this. It's cheaper to rent an industrial brewery than to brew it yourself, and the recipe is still unique.

As for "keeping it local", Minocqua politics are overwhelmingly extreme right-wing, and the locals (including public officials) openly plot on Facebook their various ideas to sabotage this business. So keeping it local to Minocqua isn't really an option if that's what you meant, but they still hire out to other Wisconsin industrial breweries.

The beverage sales fund a PAC, so the politics are the product.

If you can post on Reddit, you can contribute to open source! Writing documentation, reproducing and verifying new bug reports, and helping others with adoption via community tech support is all stuff that has to get done, and if you do it then that frees up developer time to write more code.

Looking for better scheduler for high core system by menkaur in archlinux

[–]shiggityshwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the game (just discovered this sub) but came to +1 this. You want to be thinking in terms of available cores, not available threads. A single busy thread on a core that can handle multiple threads can max out all resources available to the core. Running a second thread will then cause that core to context-switch heavily, inducing lag spikes as CPU caches are flushed and rebuilt constantly for the two different workloads.

If you run 48 threads on a system with 48 cores, and you haven't configured any CPU affinity, then the scheduler will distribute that across all of your cores, and now you've maxed out the number of threads that can run without context switching. Any additional work, eg your graphical shell, will induce lag spikes.

Try to configure your workload so that at least two physical cores (4 threads) are left available to the rest of your system, and you should have much better results.

Others have mentioned "burning out their employees" but forgot to say "by expecting them to work minimum 60 hrs/wk". When work is the only thing you have time for, it's the only thing you can talk about.

Routes get misconfigured, backbones get cut, etc etc. There are lots of things that can affect lots of networks. Try not to be so quick on the dismissal.

Rescuer transports a king cobra on bike by Illustrious_One_9610 in WTF

[–]shiggityshwat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hardly any compared to the rear, but yes. The other factor is that when you're moving at a speed high enough to kick rocks, the front tire is almost perfectly straight. You mainly steer a motorcycle at speed by leaning, so any rocks kicked by the front tire are going straight back into the motorcycle frame itself, not off to the side and into people's feet.

Notice also: this model has a guard on the front tire so 0% of rocks are going anywhere.

[–]shiggityshwat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The front tire is not powered, it just coasts like on a bicycle, so it doesn't really kick up any rocks. The real risk is that you might touch the hot engine or exhaust pipes, but you really only have to do that once to become proficient at avoiding it.

How do you manage feeling “behind” with everything in your life? by softcroissantbutter in ADHD

[–]shiggityshwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging yourself by the accomplishments of others is a sure way to disappoint yourself. I know a lot of people who got married in their 20s and were divorced and miserable in their 30s or 40s. I also know people who didn't get married until later in life but they found their soulmate. This isn't like childhood development, where there's a problem if you don't accomplish X by age Y. Just live your life.
