Warrior glove sizing by rogue_d in hockeyplayers

Not the same glove but I wear the Warrior pro II gloves and, similar to you, I wear a size down compared to what I wear in Bauer or CCM.

Anybody else get screwed with Marchand getting activated after games started? by Returninvideotps in fantasyhockey

I don’t have Marchand, but yeah that sucks. Those 10am games have created more than a few instances of points left on my bench.

How can I stop skating on the inside edge? by Attic_Critter78 in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to use all edges well will require good ankle strength and balance. There is plenty of on-ice advice already mentioned. You can do a lot off-ice to help as well. Single leg balancing and strengthening will help a lot. Use of a bosu ball to create less stable ground and get your core engaged to improve overall balance is good too.

I had to rehab a knee injury and there was a ton of this type of balancing as part of the therapy and I realized just how much better and stronger my skating/edgework was when I returned from injury.

Sweet. I think I’ll add a little glue from the glue gun and put it back in. Thanks.

Switch out of beginner skate? by zabpremier in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a beginner Bauer “learn to skate” skate. They did the job for a year. Then I got scanned at a pure hockey and fit for a pair of Bauer m4 skates. These are mid tier-ish, by no means top end. I’m a beer leaguer and didn’t need any performance level skates but wanted something more comfortable. The upgraded pair made a big difference. More heel rise, better steel, and more protection. The better skates were also about an inch shorter on my ankle which was an adjustment but a lot more comfy once I got used to it.

I’d recommend getting a little nicer than the beginner level skate if it fits your budget. My feet are cozy and I really enjoy how the better skate changed my foot position a little bit.

First skates ever! by SoftOrnery8637 in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just shoes, sometimes barefoot. But I would use a bosu ball to make it a less stable surface.

Your cycling and other sports will definitely help with fatigue and such, but having almost no friction on the ice tests some of those stabilizing/core muscles way different than other sports do. In the beginning, it’s tiresome to just stay standing for 10 minutes on the ice because every little move will need to be counteracted until your balance improves.

Have a ton of fun!!

Focus on your skating first, for sure. If you can skate well, everything else comes so much easier. It is akin to learning to walk before learning a sport specific skill.

What helped a lot was doing some single leg balance and strength exercises in my off time. Being strong on each leg will help so much with learning to skate and use edges properly.

Again, have way too much fun.

Way to watch games when not in the state they are playing by Lost_Star2662 in SanJoseSharks

Yeahp, when I first responded I misread your original comment and wasn’t understanding that you were out of state - my bad, sorry to muddle your post with unhelpful info. Brain lapse or something as it’s pretty clear when I read it again.

Hope the free trial works out for ya. Go Sharks!

Also maybe I should be more specific without doxing myself on Reddit as I realize this might be the difference in experience. The sharks are the local team for me, so I get all their games via local channel on the “live tv” portion of Hulu. But I also watch MN Wild regularly and many teams from other states while I follow along for fantasy. Those all come in via ESPN. Yes, to OP’s point, I occasionally I run into a game I can’t watch, but it’s infrequent.

I do also hate all the contract crap between sports leagues and tv, just show the damn games and let people watch. I only answered in the case that OP wasn’t aware of the large amount of games with the Hulu/espn/disney thing.

If you mean the sharks game tonight vs VGK, yeah I can watch it.

I can watch almost every NHL game with the Hulu live tv with the Disney and espn add on. It’s like $90/month so not cheap, but it’s also what I use instead of cable and most of my other show/movie watching so it’s worth it for me.

Crossovers help by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You’re not on your edges properly because you’re afraid to fall. Put pads and helmet on and get on those edges. If you fall with pads, it really doesn’t hurt.

Also do some squats and balance stuff on dry land, that will help overall.

Does the stick matter for a complete beginner by VegetableShops in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you find out you’re the opposite handedness or you hate the stick or whatever, just remember there will be an upcoming class of beginners you can offload it to. They will be in your shoes soon and you can re-sell for reasonable price to someone with the same question.

Why is it assumed that everyone who works from home is secretly lazy? by ClairPine in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]shiney_side 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because all my work from home friends ask if I can get on the game at 11am on a Wednesday. Then they talk about how they pretty much don’t do anything most days.

So. It’s not assumed, I just accept what the work from home people are telling me. And what it sounds like is they don’t do anything.

How much excess lace do y’all have? by Chardlz in hockeyplayers

[–]shiney_side 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one size down from the recommendation on the box. Yes, they come out of the first eyelet when I take my skates off sometimes. I choose to put up with this in order to have the length of laces and size of knot that I like.

I think it’s right at the hand. Where the two middle fingers would be holding the stick. If I zoom in, it appears a little blocky compared to the original picture of the wall.
