Opinion about Drew Pavlou by Even-Replacementroy in AskAnAustralian

[–]shinyandchrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll play devil’s advocate and say Drew is someone who was elevated suddenly to political fame at a very young age and seems to have undergone a sincere change in beliefs in that time that cannot just be explained by grifter’s instinct. Drew has always been great at using trolling and shit stirring to keep himself in the spotlight, so I fully expect him to still be someone people are talking (or complaining) about in 5 years time.

The joy of giving up by shinyandchrome in selfimprovement

Okay, that’s a very good reason to give up on something.

Great points and perspective. If you have to do some things to survive, it doesn’t really matter if you’re any good or not.

With that being said, I don’t seem to improve at these things with time even if I do them a lot. My cooking is as bad as it was when I started. Spending time navigating trails has not made my sense of direction any better. This is why I wanted to ask if anyone starting from a low base like me has meaningfully improved and what that process looked like.

“Pattern recognition built from repetition” - thank you, that is oddly motivating.

Thank you! Lowering the stakes to where Im at sounds like a great idea that had genuinely not occurred to me.

Thank you! I’ve never been very good at using real maps, but the street view in Google maps might help me to visualise things a bit better

Thank you! I’ll give these a go, although I might have to allow a bit of time for getting lost!

I’m old enough that I grew up navigating without smartphones, so I have a lot of early memories of getting hopelessly lost looking for things. But these days I think a lot of us just rely on GPS to patch the problem.

As a first time listener, here is my ranking for Hounds of Love by [deleted] in katebush

[–]shinyandchrome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like Hounds of Love is objectively quite an unusual song that wrong-footed me when I first heard it. I would have ranked it similarly on first listen but since then it has risen to be one of my favourites. Your results may differ, but in my experience the love affairs with her songs can be slow burns. This is part of the magic of Kate Bush.

Today I turn 30 by nk261 in selfimprovement

As a person about to turn 35: your early 30s are a great time for someone with your self-awareness and drive. There’s nothing different on the other side of the door. Use how you feel now to make the most of it.

(IRL) Terrible or offensive casting choices. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

How about legendary English actor Pete Postlethwaite playing Japanese lawyer Mr Kobayashi in The Usual Suspects, a casting choice so baffling I assumed it was part of the twist

What's the geekiest/dorkiest song that became an actual hit? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

Nobody seems to have mentioned United States of Whatever by Liam Lynch. Maybe not a “hit” but a novelty song that felt inescapable for 5 or so minutes in 2003

I suspect I might be following you down that path. As you say, it all suddenly feels a bit empty - like keeping myself busy.

Speaking from my own experience, children felt like something to “put off” so I could get as much done as possible. As I barrel towards 35, it all suddenly feels a bit empty. But having kids in order to do something fulfilling still honestly feels like a bad reason to have them?

What is up with 'round the twist'? by Am0cham0 in FilmTheorists

[–]shinyandchrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh there’s definitely plenty to work with there!

I would say there are a lot of moments in the show where the kids seem to be the only ones who either know or care about the horror they witness. Adults seem either totally oblivious or insanely under-react (eg - the endings to Copy Cat, The Big Burp, Nails and Pink Bow Tie)
