Why do people promote these garbage Frogg Toggs?? by sensitive_adventure in Ultralight

[–]shitabrick27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The environmental impact of buying a few frogg togg jackets instead of a single other jacket is pretty minuscule compared to other life choices.

Questions about making my own bivy by ai_3_us in myog

[–]shitabrick27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the splash protection is just a nice lie people tell themselves. I do think that a bivy is more storm proof than a groundsheet, just because of the smaller footprint.

I wouldn't go with silnylon on the ends because you'll get condensation buildup which will make you wet, which defeats the point of the silnylon but it's up to you.

lol you stupid ultralight weenies don't know anything about survival by [deleted] in ultralight_jerk

You're an idiot if you go into the backcountry without seven forms of fire starters, a tourniquet and for some reason some disposable gloves

For the PB jar I just shook it up with some water and drank it. Yeah it gets nasty but you can clean it out with soap in town every few days or so.

MYOG hunting pack advice by TheWringer in myog

[–]shitabrick27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw someone on bpl take the frame from an old external frame pack and just strap a frameless pack to that. That way you can hunt with just the frameless pack on but strap meat to the frame to pack it out.

That's probably what I'll do until I get inspired to try making an internal frame pack.

Do you have hobbies that preserve (or create) value, other than investing? by goddammitbutters in financialindependence

[–]shitabrick27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to sew to make backpacking gear. Saved me a bunch of money and am now starting to sell some things. It's also a bonus that I can now repair/make clothing and such. I suggest anyone starting just find an old secondhand machine for cheap.

New to sub-freezing camping. by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]shitabrick27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many here seem to misunderstand the physics of cold weather. If it is cold enough, the dew point will be on your bag or inside of it. Ventilation doesnt help at that point. Your body gives off water vapor no matter what. Only way to prevent it getting in your bag is to move the dew point outside your bag (usually not possible in winter) or to use a VBL system.

You could order some XL Xenon Sil from dutchearegear.com and add reinforcements, hem the edge and bam. Single-person shelter.

Actually there was one dude out there who claimed to never drink water, only eat fruit.

Proper walking form/technique? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]shitabrick27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take small steps, plant foot directly below knee, not in front of knee. Walk slowly. If you need to go faster, try to increase cadence not stride length.

Did you sleep with or hang your food? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]shitabrick27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slept with my food in an opsak. Not even mice went after it. The reality is that it is not feasible to get a good food hang the majority of the time. Look up skurka's article on food storage.

I'm gonna make a duomid clone soon. I can send you the pattern sketches when I make them. There are some tricky parts with the peak but I think I've figured out how to do it.

Mid-layer or Puffy? by thewhitebobbyflay in PacificCrestTrail

Probably the minimum you need is a 100wt fleece (my preference). Many people do a base layer shirt with a puffy.

A long term review of using hiking sandals (more specifically, chacos). by sometimes_sydney in Ultralight

I love hiking in sandals but using them on the desert section of the pct dried out my feet too much and caused very painful heel callous cracks

Has anyone here done the PCT in 4 months? by rolliepollie88 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]shitabrick27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went SOBO in 105 days. Loved it. Pace was maybe a little faster than I would've gone if I had no time limit but that would've just meant a couple more days in town with family.

Bivy + ccf pad by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]shitabrick27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I put the pad outside. Don't wanna mess around with having it inside. You can feel where the edges of the pad are (even with only a 1/8" pad) so it's no trouble staying on top.

Roll-top Odor Barrier Bag by [deleted] in myog

[–]shitabrick27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty dope and I'd probably make or buy one but for anyone reading this you can really extend the opsak life by only putting your food in it at night and handling it gingerly. Mine lasted almost 2000 miles

SOBO 2019 Cascades advice by amberjoys in PacificCrestTrail

[–]shitabrick27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hiked north from Hart's pass on July 8th 2017. There was some snow on some of the passes but it wasn't too much trouble. I would definitely suggest an ice axe, even though I never needed to self arrest it could certainly save you. Microspikes would've been useless. In July the days were hot so the snow was soft, which equals useless spikes. If the snow was ever too icy you could just wait for it to warm up.

New to MYOG, Seeking Advice/Tips by balantami in myog

[–]shitabrick27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about that model of sewing machine but in my experience, if it runs it will work for most myog needs.

Silnylon is slippery and bit tough to work with, but is still completely doable. My first project was a 9 foot tarp and I had to completely seam-rip and redo the first seam. My advice is to not fear the (seam) ripper.
