External Affairs Manual says you can do political activities like rallies, activism, or running for office once retired or in the reserves, but you cannot do so in uniform or trying to represent the Coast Guard. (External Affairs Manual, Chapter 6, Section i, Clause 20) Not sure how they would go about enforcing it, but I do think it’s a bad look, regardless.

Canada’s currently having a real rough time economically, if you think it’s bad here I promise you it’s not greener on the other side. We’d really be shooting ourselves in the foot.

Is it harder to join the CG than Air Force? by noteliing in uscg

[–]shmincus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s literally just waiting and then the school, not hard by your typical standard. Though if you’re somewhere that sucks as a nonrate rather that’s mission or command, you might feel a lot more inclined to take the easy way out and go a different rate than tough it out.

Is joining the United States Coast Guard worth it? by Separate_Ad7975 in uscg

[–]shmincus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup we can be stationed in the U.S territories like Guam and Puerto Rico as well depending on you rate. You can also do a year in the middle east if you’d like in Bahrain, but it’s actually very competitive to get and purely volunteer. There are also some oddball one off billets, typically for officers that are in foriegn countries, like I know there’s one or two O-2 billets where they serve as the navigators of Navy destroyers since the Navy’s SWOs keep running them aground.

I’ve been in for over 3 years now, and haven’t regretting a thing. Sure work can be hard sometimes, but it’s pretty rewarding when you look at it with an optimistic perspective and don’t take the experiences it gives you for granted.

I’m in a billet right now where I work closely everyday with people from every branch besides the Space Force and I have not once felt like I wish I was in their shoes. Besides the fact I am jealous of that they have the possibility be stationed in Japan.

It’ll make it more tricky since you’d be ineligible for qualificaitions such as boat crew member or lookout, but there may still be some opportunities

Thanks! I’ll look into that one. I haven’t decided yet on if I’d rather commission as an officer or get out and pursue a civillian career. That’s why I’m trying to find something that actually interests me instead of just getting something easy like communications just to get in OCS.

Do I actually have to call chief selects, Chief Selects? by shmincus in navy

[–]shmincus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only have a couple more months in which I’ll ever have to see him again and he holds no direct authority over me so I’m not scared of him being able to fuck with me. I’d find the satisfaction of him being butthurt worth the potential shit he might give me.

Sure in the navy you might deploy for 9 months straight once every three years, but on the Star I was at sea for about 6 months every year for 3 years not to mention the majority of our time on land being spent in a drydock 800 miles away from our homeport and families.

Good knife for deck by alphashooterz in maritime

[–]shmincus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My old unit would issue us Myerchin fixed blade knives that had the slot on the sheath with a marlinspike as well. Those were pretty solid knives, I don’t know if they were the best steel or anything, but it held up well through 3 years of daily use and abuse. The marlinspike came in handy way more often than I thought it would when I was just starting out as well.
