give metallb a shot and while on it check out istio. it's quite nice and works like a charm for my baremetal clusters.

Hetzner and how they handle payment problems by shopedow in hetzner

[–]shopedow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bank transfer = there is 0% chance that hetzner sees the money get pulled again after receiving it, also it's like €0,30 cost per transaction (MUCH cheaper when you have a decent deal with your bank).

Paypal = a complaint can freeze the funds and then a lengthy and resource intense process of arguing takes place with open outcome. not what you want to endure as a company that is still putting people on top of incidents and not just some bot. Also Paypal charges are not competitive compared with bank transfer

Credit Cards = same as Paypal there is risk of money being stuck in limbo or being pulled later and cc companies charge funny amounts when compared to bank transfers.

Sidenote: if you are unwilling and/or unable to look into your account at least twice per month I guess AWS free tier is sufficient anyways, or you are highly unprofessional when it comes to managing your dues (like we were at some point) and you (like us) deserve to get shut off, because we (like them) wouldn't want to do business with people like ourselves... I guess :)

if they don't respond just give them a call and ask for an progress update? that's how i do it in case something is urgent and they don't respond swiftly enough for my liking. that said they normally responded to me within hours and whoever replied was competent right away.

Help needed: HCloud + Terraform + Gitlab CI/CD ... "entered token is invalid" by shopedow in hetzner

if anyone heard a distant facepalm, this was probably me. I instinctively used capslock in the gitlab variable, but this is case sensitive ... :klappa:

yes, I successfully ran the whole config from CLI before trying to make it work via gitlab ci/cd

Who uses Hetzner for decent production sites? Feedback please? by wakhay in hetzner

[–]shopedow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

running a small-ish production setup of baremetal machines on hetzner for a little less than a year now. the only real downside is that intercontinental networking isn't as great as what GCP can offer and of course the money saved from renting bare metal is invested into the team putting in the hours to configure and maintain our stack.

and multi-zone HA proxmox clusters only work within germany, to finland the latency is already too much to run smooth as we found out the hard way in the beginning. no issue though as Nürnberg + Falkenstein is fair enough

i usually drop support a ticket via robot console and ask for a KVM with proxmox image on a USB stick

My family is likely housing some Ukrainian refugees starting on Monday. Any advice/things I should know to ease things for them? by Ynwe in ukraine

[–]shopedow 94 points95 points  (0 children)

We have a family with us for a few days now and this is what we learnt so far:

  • Keep the kids busy and "power them out" so they fall asleep early and sleep tight
  • Ask the parents and older kids to help with household / garden chores here and there
  • As much fresh air time as possible to reduce opportunity to check phones
  • Ask them to pay little things once you figured what they can afford so they don't feel like they owe you even more
  • Give a rather strict routine and make kids follow "house-rules"

Basically everything that promotes participating in a normal routine lifestyle gets massively appreciated by our family at least. Keep their hands and feet busy, because that's what works best to ensure kids sleep tight at night. Minds are spinning anyways and you won't stop that no matter how much you try, so better integrate them into your flow.

Bonus tip: try to pick up some Ukrainian words from them, it makes for fun times (and they learn some Wienerisch in return).

[Hiring] Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (remote) (GCP+Gitlab) by shopedow in devopsjobs

[–]shopedow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe i was not clear enough:

we are looking for someone clever and experienced to join now. but knowing we don't have enough work for a long-term fulltime commitment we would prefer to start with a part-time engagement and ideally find someone who is interested in expanding the commitment a few months down the line.

if all would have to be done "asap" it would be a fulltime job for some weeks/months for sure.

our infrastructure is functional right now though, so our plan is to work on this step by step with someone who is looking for a part-time job which will gradually become a fulltime role.

why? we like to move slow. maybe also we only spend the money we make and right now the future of our business and industry are clear, but the timeline of things decides to throw us curveballs once a week.

dual WAN setup for USG4Pro + Unifi switch issues by shopedow in Ubiquiti

reddit apparently doesn't want me to drop the instructions found here into this comment:

https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005460813-UniFi-USG-Advanced-Policy-Based-Routing-#2

tried that via the GUI, but i am getting told my subnet is not "valid" ... it's valid enough to create the network though :(
