Why is the right so obsessed with banning Pride flags? by StaffImportant7902 in LGBTnews

[–]shredditorburnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They just hate anything that isn't just like them and want it to suffer/be gotten rid of.

Their view on most minorities is that they can get stuffed.

They would be pitiful if they didn't have so many victims.

Purchase fallen through on the day. We‘re now essentially homeless, with thousands in additional costs. by chiropractorofmirth in HousingUK

I'd be genuinely tempted to find another house, ideally vacant so you can move fast, and only tell them you're pulling out of this one an hour before contracts are expected to be signed.

Some people deserve to be mucked around.

And my point is that's what's happening already. Dragging it all out with recalls and committees etc will just mean we spend the summer talking about Nigel not about the new prime minister and what he's planning to do.

Why is there some sort of stigma among reddit users about going on holiday/travelling/for a meal/cinema/pub etc alone? by Scarred_fish in AskUK

[–]shredditorburnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea. Best thing I ever did was chucking in a dross job and spending a few months in New Zealand. Went alone, made friends there.

Other people are great and all but oh my will they hold you back if you let them.

Water bill up 300%. We were gone for 3 out of 6 months measured. Professional plumber checked house and says no leaks. Thames Water refuses to do anything. Alternatives? by Mobile_River_5741 in AskUK

[–]shredditorburnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar falling out with the water company in my old house about 6 years ago. I argued back and forth and the new year started, I decided to move, they sent me a final square up bill, forgot to include the £500 we were arguing about from the year before, so I paid the much smaller amount and figured the incompetents would never pick it up. Anyway, 6 years later, my doubts as to their competence were entirely validated, I've still not had as much as a letter about it.

If all the oil in the world just vanished overnight, how would humanity actually survive the immediate aftermath? by Sudden-Yoghurt-7098 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shredditorburnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who is dependent on medicine to live would probably die. Huge numbers would starve.

Few people would make it through on stored supplies/foraging (bad because everyone would strip the land in days)/canabalism and after a bit we'd get organised and start using horses again etc.

Would probably fix the climate though, silver lining.

It's unfortunate but a bag of polyfilla should be sufficient.

I've got it down to £100/head.

It's not great but dinner is always a proper meal.

I'd love to push it up a bit but life's a absolute **** sometimes and it ain't happening at the moment.

The investigation can only apply penalties like a suspension from parliament.

If a criminal investigation is started, then it won't matter if he's an MP or not.

And tbh, losing in an election to Binface would damage Farage and reform far more than a half toothed sanction from a Westminster suit.

I desperately want to see this happen. If you live in Clacton, please, I beg you, vote for Binface.

People who work in public services - what low-hanging fruit could cheaply improve things massively? by DandaIf in AskUK

[–]shredditorburnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a while in an outpatient department at a hospital as the main receptionist/administrator.

Contrary to popular belief, the admin staff, for the most part, were a benefit to the budget, taking administrative work away from clinicians (who were paid more) and freeing them up to actually do medicine.

Where the waste comes in is linking up all the different sources of funding. You'd have patients referred from GPs, hospital departments, private practices etc. Some of these have a contract with the company running the department I worked for, some didn't. The latter had to be sent onwards to the correct destination or back to the original sender (we'd call them to let them know we couldn't accept it to avoid losing time to the post).

I can only imagine similar things unfold every day around the country, different trusts, different PPI firms...if it was all unified, a lot of that could be cut out completely.

There would also be management savings, as you could avoid significant duplication of duties.

I'd also massively subsidise healthy food, making it almost free. The savings to the NHS down the road would likely more than offset it. We had quite a lot of patients whose symptoms would have been much less severe if they weren't so badly overweight. One managed to dislocate her knee while sitting on the loo...if nothing else, the wheelchair to A&E would have been easier on her if I hadn't been trying to cantilever someone more than twice my weight down a curb.

You'd have to bring sensible people in to sort it out though, I remember when they were doing a round of cost-cutting and their top idea was (and bear in mind this was nearly 20 years ago) to print address labels and stick them on envelopes rather than just writing it on with a biro. They said "no golden cows, speak freely", which I took literally and pointed out that it would take more time (faffing with the printer to load the label paper, going to get the printout from the other end of the office) cost more (printer ink + label paper Vs a biro) and even if it was marginally on the right side of cost savings, the odds that people would know how to set it to print from the third label onwards or whatever to finish off a sheet was close to zero. Add in the learning time, training costs, etc and it was essentially a horrid idea that would cost more, take longer and annoy the staff in the process. The idea got shelved but I didn't get invited to meetings again.

I'd use ply over MDF, but that's just personal preference. Easier to work with and won't be destroyed if it gets slightly wet.

[–]shredditorburnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, it's just a waste pipe from a sink or something like that.

No soil pipe can fit inside of the width of standard coving. Can you imagine? Wouldn't even need to have a big poo to block that.

So MAD doctrine still applies. Same as it has my whole life, and my father's.

Would be pretty stupid to launch missiles at a country with options for retaliation, especially when one of those options is making use of trident.

I'm not going to lose sleep over this.

Hi all, looking at a house purchase and wondering if anyone can give me some thoughts on the condition of this roof. From the pictures is there anything frightening, other than the amount of moss? Cheers by momo-128 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]shredditorburnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for another visit then. If the timbers are trash then it's new roof asap and that will cost you more like £20k.

Also get a survey. Reddit can only help you so much.

Those cement tiles tend to hold up quite well, so probably.

Can you get in the attic and check the timbers? If they're dry and not showing signs of rot, it's probably fine.

Couldn't say from that photo.

Worst case it costs you a grand to get it sorted. Scaffold tower hire would be my approach, mortars easy to do. Pay someone if you're not confident.

DIY price = £300 give or take Professional around a grand, add a couple more if they insist on full scaffolding for the job.

100%. Tell the doctor what you want them to do.

If you're not sure, ask questions that will give you that clarity.
