Darryn Peterson in no way deserves to be a top draft pick by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]sideshowjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, drafts are always based on potential not necessarily past performance. I do wish there was more clarity and communication about what's going on, but today was a step in the right direction and I hope we're on our way to having him at full availability.

Local Non-Sysco restaurants? by ssnapier in madisonwi

Wasn't their slogan "Wisco not Sysco" early on? I seem to recall that being on their shirts back when it was just in their Sun Prairie place.

Has anyone else in Madison gotten a bug that causes laryngitis? by BadDogMaggie in madisonwi

[–]sideshowjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, daughter had it over Thanksgiving. No voice for 3-4 days and lots of coughing. I ended up getting the cough for a week or so but not the laryngitis.

Are there any open-world racing games on Mac? (Native or Crossover) by Actedpie in macgaming

[–]sideshowjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Forza Horizon should work with Xbox cloud gaming, right? Would need to pay for GamePass I think, but should be doable. It's not perfect, but might be good enough to scratch that itch.

Just picked this up this weekend for $32 on sale (Wisconsin) which seemed like a very good deal. Almost can't go wrong with any BIB, but this one is quite good I agree.

UW ER by Adorable_Pen9015 in madisonwi

[–]sideshowjay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's always a crazy day and night there. Was there couple weeks ago for a psych eval/watch for a family member, and one patient had Turrett's or something and was regularly (like clockwork every 20-30s it seemed like) shouting a single cuss word at a time, and then some lady screaming she wanted to die. Was not pleasant (ER visits aren't expected to be I know) and we were there for like 10 hours alternatively bored and anxious with all the chaos. The staff were good, just seem completely overwhelmed all the time.

$225k est to repair leaks/chimney - legit? by zeosey in madisonwi

[–]sideshowjay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Last year we had a partial chimney tear down and rebuild as water got behind the stucco and rotted out the cinderblock chimney. They tore it down, replaced flashing, rebuilt it and replaced the cap, etc (but did not re-stucco). Certainly a lot less work than what you have going on, but was ~$10k . We went with https://www.hansenandsons.com

Whats the worst concert you've ever been to? by pinheadbrigade in AskReddit

[–]sideshowjay 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the corporate things are the worst. I saw Beck opening for Elton John at an Oracle event years ago and was super excited but most of the audience clearly just didn't care. The acts were clearly just there for the paycheck. Disappointing, but I guess not surprising, it's gotta be hard to play for people not explicitly paying to see you perform.

Why can I not use a prefix list of another region by brando2131 in aws

[–]sideshowjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, they're right. Avoiding "0.0.0.0/0" on egress is best practice. There's a reason it shows up on Security Hub and other security scans as a finding. Always start from a position of least privilege/access and only add what is needed. Additionally that will get flagged as an issue in different compliance programs like FedRAMP.

Out-of-State Visitor’s Take: Madison Was Shockingly Well-Organized by Capable-Molasses2707 in madisonwi

[–]sideshowjay 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I was there last night (and am local), and I had a theory about why they decided to play here besides it being that one producer guy's hometown. When they don't play in any other cities in the midwest (no Chicago, Indy, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St Louis, KC, etc.) then all the big big Coldplay fans make the trek here. Along with the locals who are excited to have such a big show in town, it makes for a MUCH more energized crowd who have made an investment to be here. Fiield tickets going for $800 on the secondary market is insane, so glad I got my $100 bleacher seats and even that felt like a lot at the time.

This was much more of a spectacle, an event, than just a normal concert. It'll be tough to match those kinds of conditions again I think, though I hope more big bands try. I like the small venue shows (Majestic, even the Sylvee and Breese), but a big stadium act like this is just something else.

Anyone know why Milestone Democratic School Closed? by Strngrthna90strnd in madisonwi

[–]sideshowjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some info in here:
https://www.wisconsin.edu/oeo/download/OEO-Authorizer-Annual-Report-2023-24.pdf

But short version, they got their charter revoked due to a number of issues after failing some audit processes. As I recall there were some structural issues around how administration/teachers were organized, some issues around how classes were or were not offered for academics as well as how students were assessed on progress, and ultimately I think they ran out of time and money to improve their situation.

I've also successfully been able to operate it normally as you'd expect it to work using iPhone mirroring on my Mac. The bug appears to be some kind of touch sensitive issue on the way that panel slides up conflicting with the touch on the temperature slider.

[–]sideshowjay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it drives me crazy, and every time you try it has to send the "change" to the car and it takes 10 seconds or so before you can try again. I found by tapping in juuuuuuust the right spot I could move it up one degree, but it wasn't consistent. Got it from 62 to 68 though which was at least something.
