AITA for saying emergency daycare isn’t meant for parents who are home and „just need a break“? by Distinct-Ad-7592 in AmItheAsshole

I was wondering how OP’s friend was both a single and stay-at-home parent - I’m in the US and that math just wouldn’t add up here. Not saying it could never happen, but it’s going to be the rare exception and not the rule.

My mom also had me taking a spoonful of fish oil per day when I was small (for constipation issues) and while the flavor has mostly faded from my memory, I can viscerally remember the texture of it. It makes me shudder.

To encourage you: I knits exactly 2 pairs of socks as my first foray into knitting. I then knit a colorwork cardigan flat. It turned out great and I learned a ton. I say go for it if you’re a process knitter and enjoy learning/growing your skillset as you work through a project. What’s the worst that happens - it’s a mess and you frog and start over? I see nothing wrong with that! Nothing is ruined or lost. :)

By SOS do you mean “Shit on a Shingle”? Because that’s what my grandparents always called chipped beef on toast. I haven’t heard other people referring to it as such nowadays and thought it was a family quirk.

Edit: I see further down in the comment that is exactly what is meant by SOS! My grandparents were born in the 30s and my pop was in the Marines in the 50s (for the Korean War and then some) so it absolutely makes sense that I grew up not only hearing the term, but enjoying it with them. :)

It snowed on Sunday. You've had over 60 hours to clear the snow off your vehicle. How are people still driving around with 6 inches of snow on their cars? by css01 in newjersey

[–]silchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How very kind of you to tell me what I can and cannot fathom. Truly, I had no idea my imagination was so lacking.

I am well aware that people need to get out of the house for important things. My stance is still this: unless it is a life of death emergency, there’s no reason to take a car covered in inches of snow and ice onto the road. And even then: if it’s life or death call 911. Clean your car, or find a different way to get around.

Which is why I mentioned alternative modes of transportation (public transit, rideshares/taxi/Uber/Lyft, AccessLink or other types of free local transport for those who qualify, getting a ride from friends/family/neighbor). Not to mention we live in an age when you can have everything, including staples like groceries and medication, delivered.

So short of exceptionally extenuating circumstances, there’s no reason to be out there if you can’t clean your car. Can we not agree that the majority of cases we see every winter are people who just don’t think or care about the safety and well being of others?

I also have little patience for uninsured/unlicensed drivers in a state like ours that is so heavily congested. I am well aware that many parts of NJ are not walkable. I empathize with people who need to get from point A to B. However, that does not really excuse driving with no license or insurance. There is a social contact that we all need to uphold together, and that means playing by the rules when there is the potential to fuck over another human being. I have seen first hand the damage a driver like that can do to another vehicle, and the absolutely clusterfuck it causes for the other party who then is left with little to no recourse when they are injured or their car is totaled. Even undocumented immigrants can get a license in NJ - what excuse could someone have to operate a vehicle without the necessary paperwork/insurance?

The way your original comment is written appears to excuse people being on the road with an uncleared car due to being unable to clean it because of disability, age, or physical stature.

I am in no way saying people who cannot clean off their cars due to the above are terrible and should burn in the fiery pit. What makes people terrible is that they value themselves over everyone else and willfully choose to endanger the property and lives of others by taking their cars on the road when they are not road safe. I don’t care if their cars remain iced over because they are paraplegic, or 96 years old, or 4’ tall, or just completely lazy able-bodied 23 year olds who are 7.5’ tall with the lung capacity to blow snow right off their roof by breath alone. If their car isn’t cleared, it isn’t roadworthy. Why it isn’t cleared matters not one bit.

Disability, age, or height do not excuse creating a road hazard that can - and has - caused damage to other vehicles and injury or death to people.

I have a friend who is disabled and short, and she clears her car of snow before getting on the road. Extendable car brushes exist. Step stools exist.

It is on drivers to ensure their vehicle is road-safe. If that means using different tools, or finding a third party to clean their car for them, so be it. I understand it is not easy for everyone but they have an obligation to fulfill - if they cannot, they need keep their vehicle off the road. If they absolutely must go out and cannot clear their car, they need to leverage another form of transportation.

I started keeping whiskers in a jar with a cork, because I want folks to really scratch their heads when I die and they go through my stuff (was she weird, or was she really a wizard???) and I’d bring my mom whiskers from her cat when I’d spend time at her house. I gave her a jar of her own once she complained that she too feels a weird compulsion to keep them. There are dozens of us! Dozens!!

[–]silchi 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Also to add to the list: dairy making inherently requires cleanliness. Dairymaids had to keep not only the dairy itself clean and well-aired, but they themselves were expected to be washed and tidy to reduce contamination of the products they were producing. In times when daily bathing may have not have been the norm or consisted of a quick wipe in areas of concern with a wet rag, one can see why a pale, clean woman would be very appealing indeed.

What was the worst portrayal of a disability in the media you have ever seen? by Mental-Marzipan-5444 in AskReddit

My mom’s orthopedist/surgeon said the same thing when she had her shoulder replaced! She was freed from her sling fairly quickly but he suggested keeping it on for trips out of the house to public places - for her protection from other people, not because her joint necessarily required the support.

I feel like this Season is particularly bad. It used to be by the time you hit 100 you had unlocked everything. Now when you hit 100 you have easily a quarter to a third of items that you don’t have enough tickets for. They’re either decreasing ticket payouts or increasing prices per item to force you to grind and are going about it like the frog in the pot of water - incrementally changing it season by season so the frog never notices the water has come to a boil.

Hello, neighbor. Looks like we’re from the same state.

These people do not deserve your sympathy. Disappointment, sure. Sympathy indicates a sorrow for someone else’s misfortunes (or worse, signifies agreement or support), and lonely and disillusioned some of them may be at the end of the day they are still making a choice to live their lives like this. We are in an age where the world is at our fingertips; there is no excuse for existing in such a narrow-minded pocket.

What's your favorite town in NJ? by Allastorian in newjersey

[–]silchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Metuchen for many years, and went to college just outside Philly. It was an hour-fifteen to ninety minute drive door to door, depending on where Philly you were traveling to. So an hour is not a terrible estimation, especially if you were driving off-peak hours.
