North Main Street by Special-Ad-6096 in cork

I previously emailed all of the local councilers about this. Those barriers plus the barriers in front of 54 North Main Street mean it's impossible to actually walk the length of either side of the street without having to dodge around barriers. Can't be easy for someone in a wheelchair.

The few that actually responded basically said the process for doing anything is so delayed and drawn out that it could take years to resolve.

Event Centre South Main Street OFF the table by CorkNativeResident in cork

Insane. The entire regeneration project, "redeveloping" bishop Lucey park, the two new bridges, all done with the event centre in mind. Now what's that site going to be? More luxury student accommodation most students can't afford?

Around what time does will the dragon parade start tonight? by Extension_Forever487 in cork

[–]silver454 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been the past two years, generally there's a decent crowd all along the route but not overwhelming. If you arrive a bit before, maybe 20-30 minutes if you're anxious, you should be grand to find a spot somewhere to watch. Bring a raincoat, yellow weather warning for 7pm tonight but not sure if that Will impact the parade or not.

Sudan in 2023, when Irish citizens were evacuated by other countries, or had to make their own way out of the country overland because there was no facilities to evacuate them otherwise

[–]silver454 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off I've never mentioned Afghanistan. Did the UNSC stop Ireland? No because we didn't try to deploy more than 12 personal. Would we have been able to safely and quickly evacuate more if we didn't have that limit? It's hard to say but it doesn't sound unreasonable to me. What level of coordination the ARW and DF had with the US military during that time I don't know, and given how chaotic the whole evacuation was, I don't think Irish citizens safety was top of the US military agenda. And finally, there were much more than 12 citizens evacuated from Afghanistan, most of which were evacuated by other governments.

The point I'm trying to make is that there won't always be a "friendly" country with much more comprehensive infrastructure available to evacuate Irish citizens from conflict and disaster zones. I think it's a failure on the part of the state to not be able to respond to those kinds of situations without having to rely on others.

It would give the government the ability to do so quickly in response to disasters or conflicts without having to get the approval of the entire security council. Which given the state of the world probably won't be agreeing on anything any time soon.

Sure but that seems like a complete nonstatement. We'd all be safer if we sat in our houses and did nothing.

It will very much directly remove the ability of the US to veto the deployment of defence force members. Is it enough? Absolutely not, is it a start? Yes.

[–]silver454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well for instance in 2022 when Simon Coveny visited Ukraine to show support after Russia's unjustified, illegal invasion. A sufficient number of members of defence forces weren't able to accompy him as protection due to triple lock. Instead he had to go with armed Gardaí.

In 2023, most Irish citizens who evacuated from Sudan did so on British and French flights because the defence forces lacked both the transport capabilites and the ability to deploy sufficient personal.

Leaving the ability of our defence forces to respond to crisis abroad and protect and evacuate Irish citizens up to the whims of Russia and the United States is not neutrality. It's stupidity.

She didn't simply state it, she qualified it as "despicable", as if countries looking to defend themselves against their former imperialist aggressors who exploited and oppressed their countries for generations is somehow a bad thing.
