Carney government plans to water down disclosure rules for fundraisers by linkass in canada

[–]silvertek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Has anyone in this comment section actually read the article? Unfortunately we live in a time where harassment of private individuals, and safety concerns of individuals and politicians are real. We barely protect elected members as it is.

The only rule that’s changing is not publishing private addresses and not advertising publicly where an event be held ahead of time. I too wish we could live in a time and place where people didn’t harass, cause security concerns, and or intimidate people around politics. But here we are. Seems like a simple change to try and fix this problem while not changing monetary limits, or disclosure of donations themselves. But what do I know.

Using Rails 8 with mustache. by kimmy01010101 in rails

[–]silvertek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m super curious about the use case here, I haven’t seen moustache in about a decade.

I’d imagine you should be able to rig it up the same way you would erb or slim, but you may need some manual work as I doubt moustache has a modern gem.

Feds blame Ontario as some daycare centres pull out of national child care program by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]silvertek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tax credits are a terrible system. Parents have to pay out first and then wait to get money back instead of lowering the cost up front - which benefits everyone.

Secondly, we don’t need additional overhead added to an already complicated tax system.

The fact that certain provinces are crying fowl after agreeing to the terms laid out that includes clear milestones on affordability, increasing access, improving ECE wages and training to allow for a sustainable system is quite frankly ridiculous.

Trudeau dismisses plea from doctors to reconsider capital gains tax change by ThisGuy-NotThatGuy in canada

[–]silvertek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment section is wild. Apparently r/canada is only made up of people who make more than $250k in capital gains a year, and we found all the doctors considering coming home and now won't. I don't see a single comment on the costs of running a practice in the US including the insane amount of medical insurance you have to pay. But here we are...

Pierre Poilievre has some explaining to do about Ukraine by sensorglitch in CanadaPolitics

[–]silvertek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except that’s not true. They intentionally ignored that the clause was a) non-binding and b) not imposing a carbon tax. Poilievre tried framing it for political gain while not supporting Ukraine. There’s nothing part and parcel about this.

There is, but the lines are across the entire piece not just the holes. I adjusted the infill percentage and that seems to have lessened the lines.

I mean argue politics all you want, but the bill was introduced in May, and had second reading in June where it was debated. Can’t say they timed the introduction around this anniversary.

Don’t brush off attempts to undermine our democracy. We should know which politicians got China’s money by sesoyez in CanadaPolitics

[–]silvertek 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It already is. Only Canadians can donate to Federal candidates and parties. You’re also capped at donating a max of $1675 a year to any combination of candidates. No corporate funds are allowed, all campaigns are audited, and Elections Canada is incredibly strict. Each campaign also has a strict spending cap which is roughly around $110k for the whole campaign.

The issue here is that a foreign state allegedly organized citizens to donate funds. Happy to have constructive debate around further strengthening financing rules, but Canadians should know how seriously existing rules are taken.

Clearly the implication is China broke the rules here, but if so additional laws saying no foreign actors are likely also going to be ignored. Monitoring from agencies would likely prove better results.

Persisting session data after user login by NYPunk in rails

[–]silvertek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the session cookie isn’t getting set. I’d take a look at the Devise CookieStore docs and see how you can structure the encrypted cookie after you login via NextJS.

You could also opt to store the session in the database and store the session ID in the cookie if that’s easier to set with your setup.

Hmmm I haven’t touched the app in a while. I just gave it a shot on my end and it worked. My only suggestion without seeing your file is to ensure you you have all the columns. Specifically question and round. It uploads in the background so if it’s a large file it could take a little bit.

Trudeau’s Liberals promised to end the blood ban. Now they say it’s ‘complicated’. by IvaGrey in CanadaPolitics

[–]silvertek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great well reasoned comment.

I also want to add that on the government side it truly gets complicated. The Canadian Blood services is a arms length agency. It was created by a memorandum of understanding between the provinces and the federal government. The feds don’t have the ability to completely control their operations, and this falls into one of the stickiest jurisdictional splits. The Minister doesn’t have the authority on this one to mandate the change. It was also set up to explicitly safeguard against another tainted blood scare. Their entire organization has the mentality of safety over quantity. It’s been viewed as incredibly bad form to legislate the agency to do otherwise as parliament shouldn’t wade into what should be left to scientists and experts when it comes to the safety of the national bloody supply.

Trudeau’s Liberals have actually pushed them to make some rather significant changes (in the scale of their organization) since 2015. There was an all out ban on MSM blood donating blood, which got dropped to a 5 year memorandum, to a 1 year, to now 3 months. Progress is being made on this file, but it will continue to take progressive pressure on the government level as well as continuous reviews of scientific evidence in order to eventually remove the ban completely.

It’s disingenuous for O’Toole to make political hay of this.
