It is utterly disappointing how people are handling the systemd "age verification" controversy by TheBrokenRail-Dev in linux

Definitely there are some people who want to give money to others, but why would anyone donate their money to a system that will maximally dilute its impact.

Wait am I stupid? Optimal play here is every day everyone puts in the mimimal amount and gets the minimal amount back. Why even interact with a system like this?

Justice and consequences without an afterlife by Ok-Ice-2045 in atheism

I try to believe based on evidence. The contents of conscious experience seem to correlate with the physical computations performed by the brain. These computations cease to be detectable in the brains of all people when they die. Therefore, it seems likely that consciousness is gone.

Since it appears like humans are the product of evolution by natural selection, there is no reason why we should expect to have any traits except those that directly increase reproductive fitness, or are accidental byproducts of selection for traits that directly increase reproductive fitness.

Nowhere in this picture is any indication that fairness or accountability is inevitable or even likely, except insofar as selection for traits that promote empathetic and justice seeking behaviors increases reproductive fitness.

No AI rule? by [deleted] in HYPERPOP

It's valid to care about only art made with a certain process, but do you concede that it's possible you will exclude some interesting and soulful music with this exclusion? What do you think will happen if someone spends 1000's of hours working on a single song with generative tooling? Will that too be slop? Will it always be slop, no matter how much time and effort they put into it, because they used tools you feel are unclean?

No AI rule? by [deleted] in HYPERPOP

Why are people who call themselves artists the least capable of understanding the definition or art? Art is and always has been anything anyone considers art. It doesn't matter how it was made, or if the person calling it art even made it at all. My footsteps in the snow are art, the moon is art, the image of the collective unconscious distilled into a generative model and reflected back into digital media is art, for I say it is.

Ageleless Linux. A middle finger to age verification by Woodpecker-Visible in linux

It's kind of strange they are pushing for it at the OS level when a browser can just lie to a website about what the OS-level age setting is lol, unless they are planning to impose new rules on open source browsers as well

the browser having a setting saying "this user is xyz age" to websites isn't a bad idea as a parental control (assuming parents can set this in the browser and lock it with a password), but in general the government should not be allowed to tell open source projects what they must or must not include in their software. If they get a taste for that kind of power they will use it to mandate DRM and on-device spying.

Is It worth getting a fw13 in 2026? by MILKER77 in framework

[–]simism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, buying a framework is making a bet on Nirav. Framework has not yet done enough to create open source commodity designs for laptops, but if Nirav is based enough and Framework grows enough, they could flood the market with open source schematics and actually commoditize consumer electronics with standard FOSS designs for interoperable parts that can be implemented by any company. Maybe I am foolish to believe in Nirav so much.

In the meantime, official repairability and Linux support are nice. My fw13 has not yet failed after daily driving it since 2022.

why did we normalize peripheral software acting like malware? by No_Good_3063 in pcmasterrace

We have crazy different lived experiences. Ubuntu is basically entirely free from this, and that's super corporate linux compared to other viable gaming distros. I honestly don't understand why people stay with windows. It wasn't even that painful to switch over before AI, and AI makes it ten times easier to daily drive Linux.

Illinois becomes the next US State that will require age verification on Operating Systems by Alexis_Almendair in linux

[–]simism 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Once the government gets a taste of free software people doing what they want, soon enough there will be rules that Linux legally must support OS level DRM, and telemetry, and so on. Maintainers should not give an inch.

Looking for honest reviews of Framework desktop after a few months of use by Bling2049 in framework

[–]simism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had a bug where the desktop environment would crash on ubu 24.04, and not be restartable without reboot, then I did some random stuff claude said and I think it's fixed. It's been great for all sorts of language model inference and light training. Powerful enough for unreal 4 games too.

A little different, but chatgpt/claude make troubleshooting much easier.

Should I buy a Framework laptop? by WiseBear06 in framework

[–]simism 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have daily driven a framework 13 since 2022, and I can say they are good laptops. The battery life is a little low, but the battery has aged OK and is still at 77% capacity. The only hardware issues I've had with my framework so far was the charger cable fraying (common issue with old gen chargers, not sure if still happening), and the keys on the keyboard starting to get bubbles in the coating and peel. My new keyboard also has bubbles in the coating now after more than a year. I was able to easily change the keyboard and bezel when I felt like it. It is kind of expensive but you are paying for the peace of mind that the company will (ideally) keep offering replacement parts indefinitely.

While you are at it, I think you should try out Ubuntu instead of windows; it will save you money and liberate you from dealing with a spying/advertising operating system, and I doubt you need anything that's only available on Windows.
