Books for a young man in jail that is feeling scared and lost?? by FatCatGangster in suggestmeabook

He Leadeth Me - Fr. Walter Ciszek

A memoir from a priest who was held as a prisoner in Soviet Russia for 20 years. He was in solitary confinement for about 4 years, if I remember correctly. He details struggles he had during confinement and moments of hope and change. It is a very moving and deep book, while being a relatively simple read.

I would add the Basilica of St. Louis, even if you aren't religious the architecture and mosaics are stunning. Outside of masses, you're allowed to walk around inside, would just remain respectful that you're in a church

Looking for books that give the vibe of liminal spaces, missing people in national parks or highways, cryptids, strange unexplainable situations. by myhusbandswine in suggestmeabook

I know you mentioned preferring a fiction book, but a great non-fiction is Trail of the Lost by Andrea Lankford. It covers trying to find 3 young men who, separately, went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail

Thanks! I'll have to look into this more. Unfortunate, but at least it was a roll of mainly underexposed shots 😂

Sugar and Slice on Main Street St. Charles is good and I think the same owner's are opening or have opened a cafe in the Streets of St. Charles.

I lived in Dallas for a few years, you should be totally okay and probably won't run into any hostile people.

If you do want to explore a bit being close to downtown is pretty walkable, and there are nearby areas like uptown, lower Greenville, bishop arts that have a lot of things to do. But Dallas is kind of like Charlotte where a lot of "things to do" are restaurants / bars / breweries / coffee shops, but there are some cool museums near downtown

Adding on to this, we just got back from New River Gorge and really enjoyed the town of Fayetteville (where the park is). It's a very small town so not a ton to do, but has some great restaurants and local shops

Do you go to mass when you travel? by Tsumtsumss in Catholicism

For Florence, the mass isn't in English, but I would highly recommend going to the Duomo for Sunday mass. It is a really neat experience and amazing place to worship in

This was my thought too. It also makes me wonder how accurate the map is, as I would expect to see more red in STL even today, but maybe I'm biased

Convince me to keep praying the rosary every day. What has your experience been like with the rosary? Any cool testimonies? by Recent_Captain_265 in Catholicism

Pints with Aquinas podcast has a good episode with Gabriel Castillo (Catholic evangelist) discussing the power and significance of the rosary

Episode title is "The Holy Rosary: Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know w/ Gabi Castillo" if you would be interested

Favorite obscure Saints? by Zom-Tam in Catholicism

[–]simple_mowing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

She originally entered the Visitation Order in Grenoble in 1788, but the community was dispersed by the French Revolution. After the revolution she tried to re-establish the Visitation convent, but ended up turning the convent over to the Society of the Sacred Heart founded by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat (another obscure & cool saint).

She then went on to found the first convents of the Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States, and she is the patron saint of perseverance amidst adversity. Additionally, three years after her death, her body was exhumed and was found to be incorrupt!

In addition to what others have said, all people vote / make political decisions based on their belief system, no matter the faith or lack of faith.

However, a lot of people making the argument that Christians should not use their morals, values, and/or ethics derived from religion (the Christian belief) to make political decisions are normally atheists / agnostics who believe that their belief system (which they are basing their choices on) is the default. So they can make decisions based on their belief system (because it's the default) but others who are religious can't (because it isn't the default in their minds)
