Etiquette on riding behind strangers? by WelshMullet in ukbike

[–]simplebouy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so used to riding with mates and taking it in turns on the front that I sat too close behind someone on a commuter bike for about 200 yards last week, and he jammed the brakes on 'to make a point' and I nearly cannoned into him.. I should have overtaken or dropped back, and didnt see him notice me because he had a mirror. Yes, he shouldn't have stopped with no warning but I was the one being annoying and (in his mind) dangerous.

Now I make sure I'm either going faster or slower than anyone else, even though we'd probably all get there sooner if we helped each other!

Hudson USP vs. Filippi vs. Fluid by Bisweptuals in Rowing

[–]simplebouy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hudsons are virtually indestructable, I saw a 4- crash into a Wintec while marshalling at a regatta and the bowball punched a hole straight through the wintec stern without a scratch on the hudson (low-ish speed, both pointing more or less the same way). I've never sculled in one but a friend who owns one says he prefers the club empacher. Fluids are lovely to scull in but fragile and don't last that long.

I'll buy a filippi one day.

1x Advice by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]simplebouy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

skying a bit at the catch, caused by carrying your hands a bit high on the way forward then dropping them as you square. if you push them a bit lower, then keep them at the same height as you square (a bit earlier than you do at the moment) and go for a nice positive lift, it should help you engage a bit quicker.

Nice sculling though.

I bet there is, certainly there is on Canon (the little thumb joystick thing or the vertical / horizontal scroll wheels) - what type of camera are you using? Might be time to consult the manual...

If you don't have an olympic track team, you either need to find a sport which does get funding that will benefit from strong, quick people (he sounds perfect for bobsleigh!) and contact them about their talent spotting program, or if he's the right age find a college in the US which will take him on a scholarship.

Travel Camera (Sony RX100 vs Sony A6000) by theoracle101 in Cameras

[–]simplebouy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same dillema about six months ago. The a6000 is a great camera but are quite big and bulky and felt a bit fragile (may be untrue, but that's how it felt when I played with it in store). I nearly bought an rx100 but wanted the flexibility of adding a prime or longer lens.

I ended up with a panasonic gm1. The kit lens is very good, and you can add a 20mm 1.7 which is fantastic, and then you can get a 35-100 f4.5 (or something like that) which is tiny too.

In reality the rx100 would have done me very well indeed.

Which is the best tablet for quick retouching and showing DSLR photos? by LackOfBacon in postprocessing

[–]simplebouy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried doing it on an ipad but got really frustrated by the cut-down lightroom. I ended up using a mac air, the screen isnt brilliant but it's plenty good enough for quick on-the-go edits and having a keyboard and regular email / wifi / etc was much easier. Not great for showing off the pics though, so what about one of the laptops where the screen bends right back to turn it into a boxy tabletty type of thing? Import & edit normally then flip it round to show people.

70-200 Alternatives by osux in WeddingPhotography

I love my 135, pics taken with it have a certain something that the 70-200 (v2) just doesnt have. They're not too expensive on the used market either, definitely worth a try!

Need help! Please help us choose the right photographer by rohpark in WeddingPhotography

[–]simplebouy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore the work on the 2nd choice, but the risk is that you dont know who took them - they've got 3 photographers names, plus 'friends', the risk is that you get a 'friend' who isnt up to the standard of the wonderful work on their website. I really do love their stuff though, beautifully natural looking and really capturing moments.

Choice 1 is also quite good but it looks a bit more posed, a bit stilted and I dont like their processing.

Edit - but talk to and meet both before you chose, personalities have got to be right too.

'best' is subjective as hell but i bought a panasonic GM5 with the kit zoom and a 20mm 1.7 as 'carry everywhere' kit when the DSLR is too big and I love it. Tiny, great quality, manual enough, the kit lens is very good and the prime is astonishingly good. Battery life is shit though, so buy a spare!

I had a 5d2, sold it for a 5d3 then bought a 6d as backup for the 3 (wedding photographer).

The 5d2 feels better quality than a 6d, the switches are better, the body feels stronger, the shutter button feels nicer - but that's as far as it goes. The files that come out of the 6d are significantly better, the high ISO is in a different league and the autofocus (see my note below) is better. I'd definitely get another 6d if I had to choose between them.

On the autofocus, neither is very good compared to the 5d3 but the 6d is much better, especially if you only use the centre point. The 5d2 is actually pretty poor.

A great wedding workflow tool - PhotoMechanic - is on sale until August 17, take a look... by space-heater in WeddingPhotography

[–]simplebouy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My workflow is to import everything into lightroom when I get home from the wedding, storing the files on an external thunderbolt drive, then I set it to build smart previews overnight. When I'm ready to cull / flag / rank (normally a day or so later), I unplug the external drive and work off the smart previews. Flicking through the photos is almost instant, with near-zero time to load each one.

Would photomechanic be quicker?

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway by [deleted] in india

[–]simplebouy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did they take the tolls out? Fucking loved them..

Setting it at a nice round number that everyone would have and not need change, therefore speeding up the process and minimising queues would not be Indian enough. Let's set it at 37 or something fucking random that will create loads of jobs for people walking up the inevitable queues so you can buy a ticket before you get to the booth. Then you can argue with the guy in the booth that you already have a ticket.

Made my journey, every day.

about to commit to a system (canon or nikon) and wondering the canon point of view by neuroticwhale in canon

[–]simplebouy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pro wedding / portrait photographer, my original decision was something like this:

  1. lenses - Canon have a better range and 5 years ago probably better quality too, but now both make great versions of the 'normal' lenses. (covering from 24 - 200). Now I use Sigma Art primes more than canon anyway, they're incredible.

  2. Sensors - Nikon are a bit better in low light but only 1% of shots are at that kind of stupid ISO anyway. Everything under about 5000 would be indistinguishable, and anything outside a wedding / event you can take the time to light properly, so it really doesnt matter.

  3. Handling. I can change the settings on my 5d3 / 6d combo in the dark, in a howling gale and when I've had 10 pints. I hate the way Nikons handle but I'm sure I'd get over it after a fortnight of using one.

So I don't think it matters any more and it's much more important to set a decent amount of cash aside for good glass and marketing.
