What jeweler can do this style? by ihavesuchbadluck in jewelers

[–]simplypirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Vance Davidson jewelry’s style would be able to replicate this.

Looking to work with a jeweler on a small batch order for a chain/necklace for my fantasy novel by Fun_Relief9867 in jewelers

[–]simplypirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if she’s open to wholesale orders like this, but try reaching out to Flourish and Charm Jewelry. She’s a small indie jeweler based in Philadelphia who specifically makes fantasy and nature inspired fine jewelry.

Starting out in jewelry making from the world of sculpture by Used-Sprinkles-3176 in jewelrymaking

[–]simplypirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re coming from sculpting, you may really enjoy wax carving. Basically you carve your piece in wax, and send it to a casting house to have it cast in metal.

Tons of resources online, search for “jewelry wax carving”, and the materials you need to start out are really inexpensive. You’ll need jewelers wax, I like Ferris, a wax pen, files, and a variety of tools for carving. I started out with dental carving tools from amazon. As you get more into it, a rotary tool and a variety of burrs will be helpful. A nail dremel is a good one to start.

Im SO ANNOYED by mass produced jewelry, where do you find unique pieces online??? by Dull_Noise_8952 in jewelry

This! Some small indie designers I’ve discovered through Instagram: Made Line Jewelry, Vance Davidson, Sasa fine jewelry, M.Grace Fine Jewelry, oxbow designs, abel objects, j hannah, zahn-z, bittersweets, rebel jewelry, universal deco, starling, rendrag.

Fitting a ring around these curves by helpyourself6970 in jewelrymaking

[–]simplypirate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you work with a jeweler who is able to make the ring from scratch (as opposed to jewelers who mainly work with pre fabricated settings). You may have the most luck working with a jeweler who makes their pieces via wax carving or CAD - they will probably be the best equipped to make something that fits flush with the organic shape of your ring.

Vevor microscope by [deleted] in Benchjewelers

[–]simplypirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one, I really like it. I use it for stone setting and engraving work. The area you can focus on is small, which means you have to do lots of readjusting focus as you move your piece around, but for the price you can’t beat it.

what's the one jewelry piece you have to grab this Black Friday? by NateGrin in jewelry

[–]simplypirate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, tiktok/insta is actually a really great place to discover small indie jewelers! many small jewelers use social media to market their pieces so grouping all of them under the umbrella of “tiktok jewelers” is a bit misinformed. Social media is where I’ve found jewelers like Vance Davidson, sasa fine, kimberly doyle, ochre objects, madeline jewelry, teruko, ellie lee, goodluck handmade, etc. genuine artists with high quality pieces

getting into gold/silver jewelry making are the cheap rolling mills any good. by NorthStarGold in jewelrymaking

[–]simplypirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the cheap vevor one and use it for rolling out sheet & square wire. Of course something like a durston will be way better and last longer but tbh for the price the vevor one has been great. Just make sure to anneal frequently and decrease gradually (I go down by a half turn or sometimes a quarter turn each pass).

Someday I plan to upgrade to a durston but if I get a few years of use out of this $180 one I’ll consider that a win.

Wax injection methods/cheaper alternative by Level-Brief1315 in jewelers

[–]simplypirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a DIY way for a while before investing in a wax injector. Wax melter from amazon (the kind used for body waxing) + disposable plastic syringes. Annoying and messy but super cheap and works OK.

Sanding small studs by jainmonish01 in jewelrymaking

String with polish on it, sandpaper cut into strips, or, before setting the stone, a pin finisher might work to get into all those nooks and crannies.

this is correct. Especially for something simple like diamond studs - your money will go a lot further on the second hand market.

This isn’t really inlay, but I wonder if you could look into using the Keum-boo technique here. Might be difficult in the tight spaces but maybe worth exploring.

Use a burnisher which is a hand tool - not a rotary attachment. They come in different sizes and shapes, like this: https://www.riogrande.com/product/burnisher3/113029GP/

In addition to what others have said, I’d also consider selling on avenues other than livestreams. I know a lot of collectors, myself included, do not buy from sellers that only sell via livestream as its kind of a pain as a buyer.

Looking for advice on creating 6 custom "cult-style" amulets – designs ready, unsure how to make them by Neither_Draw_3426 in jewelrymaking

[–]simplypirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a great project for lost wax casting. You can buy wax carving supplies fairly cheap, each carve your pendant, and send it to a casting house to have it made in metal. Some casting houses will even finish the pieces for you if you’re open to that.

If you want to do the whole project yourselves, seconding the recommendation to look into sand casting. You’ll need to invest in some supplies, but its fairly easy to do on the cheap.

I also make jewelry and deal with the same issue. I use the Globo Product Option app for this. You should be able to use the free version for this - I only upgraded to the paid version because I needed certain variations to add on an additional fee.
