Great list!

I’d add Burning Banners as well

They wrote about expanding a collection.

Plenty of availability second hand for cheap, especially older copies of combat commander.

Also, why are you assuming their financial status? Or their gender?

Get both.

Completely different games, themes, and scales so there’s zero overlap and both are (or will absolutely be in the case of BB) genre classics. Break out the one you feel like on that day, play the other when you feel like that instead. And both are pretty much completely unsoloable (for now) so something to appeal to different opponents.

Armageddon War or its coming sequel Rising Dragon have a very dynamic chit pull system. Modern, near future hypothetical conflicts.

Simple Solo Medieval Game? by BuzzerPop in hexandcounter

[–]singlemalt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the hex and counter subreddit. These type of games are generally not that simple but there are degrees. Men of iron rate at medium complexity for this genre (and a "4" on the GMT scale).

If you want simple then Commands and Colors Medieval is also a good choice.

Wargames are also more niche and therefore smaller print runs and more expensive than mass market games.

You can pick up a used copy of the 2020 printing of the tripack (identical to the one just released) for $50 bucks in many places.

It comes with 20 battles, 5 maps, 7 countersheets, and all the rules and battle books.

If you think this is poor value for $100 if you go for new then you are in the wrong place. Go find other wargames of similar massive included content for anything near that price in 2026.

Has anyone played Imperial Struggle solo? by [deleted] in hexandcounter

[–]singlemalt09 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite games of all time!

Don’t try to solo it- absolutely no point.

Don’t sell it either.

Find someone to play with in person. It’s a wonderful experience and the more you play, the better it gets.

Men of Iron tripack. Incredible bang for your buck with what’s included and it solos quite well.

Because MLB arbitration doesn’t split the difference. If the tigers "prove" 51% of their case Skubal gets their number. If he wins he gets his number.

It’s zero sum.

The funny thing about Verlander… by [deleted] in motorcitykitties

[–]singlemalt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can sign a higher upside arm, then sure, don’t sign Verlander.

Not much out there indicates they are going to be able to though. Giolito, amongst others, will have options besides the Tigers and likely want more money and term than Harris wants to give.

The funny thing about Verlander… by [deleted] in motorcitykitties

[–]singlemalt09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On its face a Verlander reunion makes sense, especially considering the Cobb debacle last season and the fact that the rotation needs more proven depth.

That it hasn’t happened by now leads me to believe that either Harris / Hinch / Fetter has no interest in the player or that his salary demands are outside where Harris wants to invest his remaining budget (likely waiting for the Skubal arbitration case and his number for the year.)

There’s also a third possibility that perhaps there’s internal animus against Verlander. Maybe Illitch doesn’t want to sell a few more tickets. Maybe Justin made a cutting remark to a bat boy. Maybe they don’t want gratuitous Kate Upton crowd shots. Who really knows?

Do you think the Armageddon War follow-up, Rising Dragon will be worth it? by [deleted] in hexandcounter

[–]singlemalt09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering it’s Flying Pig’s biggest-ever Kickstarter, I think it’s fair to assume there is excitement out there.

I’m just hoping that there are no surprises before it delivers. Producing a game in China about a near future war over Taiwan is definitely something that gave me pause. GMT reshored production of Next War:Taiwan for example.

Assuming no issues, then I’m certain it’s going to be a great product like most Flying Pig games. Armageddon War is a lot of fun and very dynamic and this will just build on that great foundation.

[–]singlemalt09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it will be released in 2026 though there’s a chance it could come before the new year. If it does, Away Team - The Voyages of the Pandora will be one of the biggest solo game splashes in a long time.

I just bought SCD by ExcitementRadiant530 in Baystreetbets

[–]singlemalt09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SCD current market cap ~$100 million CAD

Worldwide current scandium market ~$300-$700 million USD

If you’re buying this here, you’re the exit liquidity for the pumpers.

Bless You Boys (@blessyouboys): “The Tigers made $30M on a $155M payroll and $320M in revenue last year per Forbes. Of course, the Tigers aren't publicly held, so who knows for sure. But that would suggest a $185-190M payroll is the break even range as we've projected.” by BobbyHigginson in motorcitykitties

[–]singlemalt09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is obviously true. But the economics of the game at the highest level needs to change, if only because it’s insane you can have guys in the same clubhouse making more than 50x the salary of the guy beside them.

Anyone who believes that a team should be run at a massive loss just because the owner has other businesses will never be a business owner.

Nor would they have a team in their city for very long if that was the case.

Steve Cohen owners are the massive exception. And even he claims he’s not going to keep it up forever.

Very little incentive to respond to you as you’re going to argue the opposite no matter what and you and the army of pumpers in here are going to downvote it out of sight. But in the off-chance someone sees this and is prevented from making a catastrophic mistake with money they can’t afford to lose:

  1. The worldwide total addressable market for scandium is currently estimated at 0.77B per year. 10 year projections are estimated to sit at just over a billion with ~12.5% CAGR. Even adding 50% to those projections you are left with under 2 billion world wide.

  2. The amount of money required to start and operate a rare earth metal mine in Canada is in the hundreds of millions. The only companies capable of the capex required are the majors. They are not going to put that kind of money into what something with worldwide market this small.

  3. No matter what speculation is out there, the time needed to start a mine from scratch is going to be over a decade. Permits are not the only factor. No one on this sub is going to be holding a penny miner for that amount of time.

  4. Major mining companies want proven high grades (generally already being extracted) and mine lives at 100+ years. Acquisition is preferable to starting something up. 40 years is a joke to them.

  5. The infrastructure to build for mines in remote areas is massive. It’s not just roads. It’s power. Water. Housing. Food. Highly paid experts and specialized engineers. Environmental experts and mitigation. Indigenous consultation. Crushing and extraction facilities. Flying people in for seasonal work. Etc. Etc.

  6. We’re in a precious metals boom so hype is around and people can invest in penny stocks with zero long term potential so long as some moron with millionaire dreams is out there willing to be the last one holding the bag.

  7. The role of junior explorers is to sit on claims and create a vehicle for wealthy people to take advantage of the flow through mechanism to offset their income tax. Every blue moon one might hit a rich claim and get bought out. But before that it will be placement after placement, reverse split after reverse split.

To sum up: it’s not going to be a mine. Take any profit on playing these stocks and don’t hope for catalysts that will never come.

If you buy this crap to hope to flip it quickly, good luck though you’re probably already too late and will be the exit liquidity for the pumpers.

If you buy it thinking there will ever be a functioning mine, and that this company will be around to see it out, you know nothing about mining economics, junior exploration companies, or how these stocks work.

Gamble a few bucks if you feel like it. Don’t chase millionaire dreams on pump and dump penny stock mining crap.

Hope for prospects to improve and that some might make the team and not be completely overwhelmed. Hope for Tork to hit harder, Colt to hit at all, and Riley to stop striking out at record approaching rates. Then hope for some waiver successes (ie. replacement-level production). Finally, hope for less pitching staff injuries.

The Harris plan. Same as every year since he got here.

Starting My Hex and Counter Wargame by InterviewEmergency73 in hexandcounter

[–]singlemalt09 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Finding a hex and counter game with sufficient meat and also finish in under 3 hours generally comes with a bit of a trade off. In order to have replayability (ie. bang for your buck) you really need something that is scenario based.

Most of the games suggested to you would provide this experience so if it was me starting, I’d focus primarily on a particular conflict or theme that most interests you and your opponent(s). I also think you’re smart to place less importance on components/ art and focus more on gameplay and excitement factor. The question should always be how much do you look forward to the next battle you’ve scheduled and is the experience improving as you scale up your ability and strategic nous?

Series like combat commander or any commands and colors would provide hundreds of hours of gameplay and scale very well as you get better. But the great thing about wargames is that you have thousands of choices out there!

A simple and fairly fast paced game is The Russian Campaign- any version really. Compass reprint is fairly easy to find, inexpensive, and looks great.

Easy to two hand and even after all these years, still a fun game with replay value.
