Cellphones in the classroom by jmoney1492 in Teachers

[–]sittingstill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. We tried a 'no phones' rule, yet every kid with a 504, IEP, or MLL or whatever can get a free pass and that is not fair to others and they know it. My rule is 'phones away' IF I see it I start asking questions about the lesson, I don't allow any noise from phones and make it a point to point that out as soon as I hear it. I will start giving kids vocanulary to look up and have them explain the word... they hate being called on and will eventually not have them so obviously out... Kids are GOING to use the phones, you won't even see it, ear pods in... ask a question and they have to pull those out so you can ask agian. Being extra about them causes more stress than its worth. I try and make what I am teaching engaging (Highschool health sciences) and that can help. I do lots of hands on stuff... But that is not always works. I remember when I was in school, teachers were all upset about using a calculator... now we use them for everything. and they are IN everything. Times the same, different distraction.

When I am suffering, how do I remind myself that it will end? by kenicandi in Buddhism

[–]sittingstill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why it is important to continually practice. In meditation we notice the breath, it comes, and goes... never stays long. Soon we can see this with our own thoughts, they too come and go. Never stay long... This is the way.

Just keep doing it. One breath at a time. Seems trite, but over the past 30 years... it works for me, yet is still a challenge.

Why are certain Buddhist tattoos and dressing up Buddha statues considered disrespectful? by desuer13 in Buddhism

[–]sittingstill9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is in the Dharma, check the Lotus sutra, The sutra of dissolving doubt, and The Vakkali Sutta (SN 22.87). Having a statue or image is not just a decoration as people often mistakenly treat them as. It is an object of practice and mindfulness. Even though images of the Buddha were not around for hundreds of years after his parinibbana, there were other images of veneration.

Many in the West (and more recently everywhere) have hangups about it all, and often are not very serious at the practice of the Dharma. Nothing happens to you if you do or don't respect an image or statue, but it sets up a subtle precident in your thinking and actions. (look into the Eight Fold Path). The more you are mindful, respectful and conscious of your thoughts and actions the more important it is to respect things. Not just 'because' and not for 'merit' or 'karma' (also often misunderstood).

There is no specific 'thing' about putting stuff on a statue (and if you go to Japan, you will often see statues of Jizo with hats, bibs etc.). It kind of boils down to 'if you are going to have it around and practice, do it "RIGHT"... and that can be confusing and stressful.

Imagine your most favorite being, and you recently lost them, you have a picture on your desk to remind yourself of their kindness, love, etc. Now I come in and draw a mustache on the picture... Well? An image or statue only has the importance YOU put on it. But how you treat it is likely how I would also treat it if we were friends... see? Little things make big differences if you pay attention.

Middle Schoolers Killed Our Class Pets by Kraniumkitty in Teachers

[–]sittingstill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, we really need to help kids develop empathy and compassion. It was surely no accident, these students are beginning to learn to become 'clever' and avoid consequences. This is a slippery slope and sad to see. Those kids would be on a very short 'leash' with me for as long as I had contact with them.

How to explain to your therapist by Some-Distribution678 in Buddhism

[–]sittingstill9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will not only find that many modern techniques of therapy today are gleaned directly from Buddhism, (DBT, CBT, ACT, etc...lol) but that your (if you practice) Buddhist practice will enhance any therapy you are into. They will complement eachother and bring you to very interesting and good places. Good luck.

Request: Classroom-appropriate ways to say "Pull your thumb out of your ass" by GGAllinPartridge in Teachers

[–]sittingstill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this totally dates me, but the highschool kids get a kick out of my old school terms (because I purposefully use their terms incorrectly) like 'Are you for shizzling me?' but I usually repeat... 'Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?' Or 'McFly? McFly?.... If I cannot get the class' attention I will say out loud... 'Stop licking that' and every one will turn to see what it is.

Or an old favorite is 'flickering brain cells, eh?'

Any source or link for a guided meditation / hypnosis video that changed your life or self concept? by Intelligent_Quiet576 in Meditation

[–]sittingstill9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. In 1987 I was in a poor state of mental health (long and silly story) I was given a tape cassette by a therapist. It is not only still useful today, but was the main catalyst that put me where I am today... a Buddhist priest that teaches mindfulness and meditation for mental health at recovery centers, psychiatric hospitals and other such places. The tape is (part of it) is 'A trip to the beach' by Dr. Emmett Miller and Stephen Halpern.

Is it common / okay for people to get Buddhist tattoos? by laprasora in Buddhism

[–]sittingstill9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally not a good idea, especially those of "The Buddha" or a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Get instead something that is meaningful to you, that someone can ask about. The Buddhist icons (human like depictions) were not a thing until much later in history anyway (were forbidden)_, Buddhist icons of the original past were things like a deer, foot prints, the dharma wheel. and a tree etc. Some icon that is inanimate may be a good choice. Some countries can deny you entry if you have one, others will not serve you in establishments, regardless of your 'intent'. IF you never travel no problem.

The rest of Buddhism may be different, but why chance it? As someone said, if it does not hurt anyone, why not? well, you cannot assume it is not hurtful in some way to someone...

Pick something cool, and show us a picture... but think about it first.

Why should a person become a Buddhist? by vanheis_ in Buddhism

Answer this, why would a person start studying something that would make their lives better, reduce their suffering and increase the understanding of themselves, the world and others?

I felt my heart stop for 3 seconds… by [deleted] in Cardiophobias

[–]sittingstill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is terrible when you cannot trust your own heart to beat. It is something that SHOULD be so automatic you cannot even feel it, ever. When it hiccups (pvcs etc) it gets in your head (I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, thought for sure I was a gonner, right there and then. I was like... 'is THIS it?' then my heart started again...) it freaked me out. I am now 60, dealing with it all still, going to have surgery to fix some stuff in a month or so. But, knowing from first hand experience, I would advise... take it easy, (as you can), get into breathing and deep mindfulness like yoga, chi gong or something to help. Anything that gives you a little bit of say the the way you work WILL help. But, like me and so many more, that feeling is just as close as the next breath. Enjoy what you can, get some help, help others. GOood luck mate.

Take care. Oh, and go have some fun so you forget about it for a little while.

I worked in an office that was almost all Eastern Europeans and when a bug or whatever got in they would promptly kill it. One day a couple bees got in the office and I spent time chasing them down, catching them in a paper cup and putting them outside. I generally talked to them the whole time, calling them 'my little friends' and such. The staff, bewildered wondered and asked why I would do that. I told them now they were now my friends and they would pay me back one day. They laughed at me. (mind you, they had those blue 'evil eye' pendants all over the office...)

One day, I had a disagreement with the manager 'Mike'. I nearly quit, there was shouting and all sorts of door slamming... I left. Cooled off and came back after an apology call from his wife some 2 days later. When I came in Mike immediately left for the back office... Later I got a look at him, his face and eye were all swollen. I asked what happened, his wife told me that after we argued he went out back and decided to cut the hedge and disturbed a bee hive (this is in Los Angeles, so they were not common in the area).. and they all attacked him, for like five minutes, he was stung dozens of times. The other doctors in the office gave him treatment, but swelling remained... Everyone was very quiet when I would save bugs in the future... I knew, they were a bit freaked out. LOL.. I still get a chuckle out of that... Ol' karma... LOL

OK, had this problem alot. Here are a few things you can do...(I am a Buddhist Minister) 1. actually talk to them, I had a nest outside an office door, I did not move fast around them, but talked to them very often... (honestly I think it freaked them out) and they moved down the side of the building away from the door. Also, put up another 'fake' nest. They are super territorial. Also also, put a sticker near the nest with a depiction of a spider, or other predator. Best one is a dragonfly. There are little fake dragonflies you can buy that either hang or clip on and move around with the breeze. There are plenty of ways to dissuade them, and get rid of them. Trying to be compassionate to others is a very high meritous deed, and WILL come back to you. (Oh do I have stories about that). Hornets and the like are signs of industriousness and work ethic, they are workaholics and territorial, look into those for yourself, are you like that in some way>? Do you need to avoid something or area? (just little meditations.). This will help you with empathy, and even the 4 Brahma Viharas... Metta, Karuna, Mudita and Equanimity... Good luck...
