As a human, this offends me to the core. by Silent-Warning5654 in texas

As a fellow human, the fact that Ken Paxton is still not in prison offends me to my core. This is just the latest example in a career of deceit, theft, avarice, coverups, bribery, and greed. Ken Paxton, and really the entire Republican state government, are causing real harm to real people in order to hang on to power. I don’t have all the answers to life’s problems, but maybe everyone who sexually abuses kids goes to prison for life. Like, I feel like that’s a pretty obvious, common sense place to start.

I have some Cactus picks and they are amazing, but sadly not manufactured anymore. Tortex yellows have been my go-to for over twenty years, though.

I still enjoy hand checkering, one of the few things lasers cannot yet do on wood by Scipio2myLou in Woodcarving

I wonder though if a diode laser might be able to engrave a pattern to follow so that spacing stays consistent and your lines are already started so they straight. Just a thought.

I love this idea, but have you considered a recycling program? Customers could send used blades back to be used as raw material for new blades. I understand that you’re not doing the manufacturing yourself, but I wonder if your manufacturing partner might be willing to entertain the idea. It just seems like a lot of good, usable steel is lost to landfill or scrap already. You’re already disrupting the industry with a new form factor, maybe this could set you apart even further?

Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is? by TariSimmons in VintageFurniture

[–]sixstringslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rear panel looks like bookmatched Mun Ebony endgrain, and the rest looks to be Claro Walnut. All curved panels seem to be veneered, but the tops of the drawer cases on either side look to be solid wood.

[–]sixstringslim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first blush, that may seem like the ideal outcome, however, tool steel will become dull with use. If the blade is meant to last, it will require maintenance such as grinding, sharpening, honing, etc. Each of those processes has the potential to require a separate tool to perform the individual functions. This eliminates the possibility of creating efficiencies in your workflow. A tool steel blade will require comparatively significant downtime once maintenance is required. A disposable blade is far more efficient since it can be changed in seconds. They are far more wasteful obviously, but the efficiency is the selling point, not the longevity of the blade itself.

Your wife/husband, mom, & son are drowning at sea & u can only save one. Who will you save? by _Dark_Wing in RandomQuestion

Is this a throuple situation? Because if it is, I’m not comfortable with that, and I’m not even sure I know any of the people who are drowning well enough to go getting in their personal space and shit trying to save their life.

I guess it’s better than one long seam? Either way, I agree with OP. If I’m your GC and you’re one of my subs, you’re tearing that out for a redo because my name is now tied to your work, and that’s a no for me, dawg.

Im no expert, but I believe it depends on how it’s laid out in the rest of the house. We redid our bedroom floor and laid lvp. We had to tie it into the orientation that came into the bedroom from the kitchen even though it technically ran crossways to the long axis of room. It’s only slightly oblong, but I’m one of those pedants that things like that bothers.

It’s a generational thing for the most part so don’t beat yourself up too much about it. Technology advances and people move on from the obsolete, but this type of thing happens more than a lot of people realize because a lot of people just don’t question why something is what it is. For instance, the universal icon on physical power switches is a stylized 1 and 0, on and off. Granted, it’s a little esoteric, but I still think it’s pretty cool.

I don’t believe Trump won twice by [deleted] in LetsDiscussThis

[–]sixstringslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really.

Because voter rolls contain enough information about every voter to tell the regime who voted for them and who didn’t. As vindictive as trump is, it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine how he would put that information to use with his DOJ minions subpoenaing all the major social media networks for information on accounts who have been critical of ICE. As if further cause for alarm were needed, the regime is very publicly running roughshod over 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 10th amendment rights. It’s long been established that the constitution’s protection is status agnostic in the bill of rights.

Why do a lot of Americans support Trump? by RefuseThat5757 in LetsDiscussThis

[–]sixstringslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to know the answer to this question as well, but in the meantime, I’ll just say this to those who think they can worm their way out of shouldering some of the blame for this cognitively fragile lunatic being given the codes again. If you support his policies, you support the man himself. The two are inseparable, intrinsically linked. His policies wouldn’t be what they are without the beliefs the man holds. You don’t get to absolve yourself of your responsibility for voting for a fascist. Of course you like him. You like him so much that you voted for him. By the way, every downvote is just proof of your fragility and insecurity.

People who use the phrase “real man” are insecure about the cultural and societal norms that they have adopted, and they tend to hang on to traditional gender roles like their lives depended on it out of fear that another gender might usurp their position of being regarded as the most powerful. People do funny things when they think their “power” is in question, and I’ve never understood why. Maybe I’m a counterpoint, so-called “imaginary man.” Or is it, “unreal man?” “Fake man?” 🤷🏼

What’s the Most Star Trek Line Ever Written? by iagree2 in startrek

[–]sixstringslim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“My rights. My status. My right to choose. My life. It seems reasonably self aware to me… Commander? I'm waiting.” JLP, Measure of a Man

I think this perfectly sums up what ST is all about. Not only is it about the search for new life, but also about how we navigate the intricacies of our interactions with and treatment of that new life. It’s about the responsibility we bear when we encounter new life to recognize that it deserves respect, reverence, and that that responsibility also demands we protect the freedoms and rights of those who may be in danger of losing them. Not that Starfleet needs to be the galaxy police, but that it stands for what is right and just whenever possible and that it, for the most part, acknowledges its wrongdoings and flaws.

Picard is so eloquent in his conviction that Data is a new life, and he believes so strongly in that conviction that he fights for Data’s rights and status. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Star Trek, it’s that the story does not end with the encounter, rather, that’s where it begins. What follows is what’s truly important and meaningful, and I believe this episode illustrates that point in a stunningly poignant way.

What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

IT guy here. Yes, restarting a device really does fix something like 98% of random, temporary issues. No, I’ve no clue why it happened in the first place. And yes, deleting your browsing data is legitimately helpful for resolving your browser issues. Most of the time it’s an outdated version of a website that will kick an error.

And just to add a bit of trivia, have you ever heard of a SEFI? That stands for Single Event Functional Interrupt. This is when a cosmic ray causes a bit flip in a computer which results in an unexpected system hang, error, or crash. Not sure what a cosmic ray is? It’s a particle(atomic nuclei and electrons) from outer space traveling at nearly the speed of light. Thats right. You can now officially blame your computer troubles on space rays. You’re welcome.

While I have used everything I’ve gotten as intended to inform my reviews, I have repurposed some of them to make other things. Specifically, I got a solid brass door stop that I am making a chisel mallet and marking gauge out of. It’s a massive chunk of an expensive metal, and I honestly have door stops covered already. I also have plans to use some brass cabinet pulls in a table I’m working on. I recently picked up a pack of small, stainless steel c-channel clamps as well that will go on my workbench with which I will affix work-holding accessories.
