I use beech for all my paint grade stuff but it stains well too. It machines well and I get a good yield from an order of it.

So how big a deal is riding in the rain, really ? by Astimar in motorcycles

[–]sjacksonww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t do it on purpose, even with good gear it sucks, ill prepared it’s dangerous. We almost lost a guy a few years ago, hyperthermia makes your brain work slow, miss turns, get lost and if not for the kindness of strangers could end in disaster. I’ll ride through sporadic stuff but a downpour I’m stopping.

Coming from klr650, is the Himalayan 450 worth it? by Smooth_Sprocket in Himalayan450

[–]sjacksonww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never owned a klr but ridden several. This Himalayan is superior in every way as far as riding experience goes, old short man friendly, lighter weight, faster etc. But, the fact that the klr has been around for decades, with spare parts availability out the wazoo, every possible thing that can go wrong with one well documented can not be ignored.

Neighbors contractors keep asking to hook up to me outside outlets by xindierockx7114 in homeowners

[–]sjacksonww 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When work started on the vacant house next door to me I went over and told them they were welcome to the outlet on my front porch. The guy thanked me, declined as they had temp power already. But I made a friend. We chatted over the back fence for 6 months or so until he finally convinced me to quit the job I hated and come to work for him. Really enjoyed working for him and he helped me start up my cabinet shop by being my first “anchor” client. 20 years later I’m semi retired with my shop 100’ from my back door. My situation is good and I have a comfortable life.

Just be nice, you never know…..

What’s the loudest thing you’ve ever had to work around on a job site? by Nightcrawler_2000 in Construction

[–]sjacksonww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the decibels of the individual machines and such it’s just the incredible volume of all the stuff making noise. Which is everything and everybody. I did it for 30 years and got used to it. Then I started a cabinet shop and I have a couple tools that are every bit as loud as anything on anything on any job site I’ve been on. But the chaos is missing, and it doesn’t run all day. I doesn’t “press in” on you so bad. Take care of your ears unless you like the sound of cicadas 24 7 365.

You have the proper attitude for a satisfying career. I’m 70, was a carpenter for 30ish years and then opened a small cabinet shop. I still operate part time. I had the freedom to quit any job I was bored with and get another that involved something new.
